Microsoft To Release Silverlight 2 In Late Summer

Microsoft has been working like gangbusters to create the perception that its cross-platform multimedia runtime Silverlight is a viable alternative to Adobe's Flash, and the vendor will soon put updated tools in the hands of Silverlight developers. In a Thursday blog post, Microsoft developer Ashish Thapliyal said Microsoft is "targeting late Summer" for its release of Silverlight 2.0, which is currently in its first beta release.

Silverlight 2.0 supports VC-1, WMV, MP3 and WMA content, but Microsoft has no plans to support the Flash video (.flv), used by Youtube and many other Websites, said Thapliyal. Microsoft's rationale here is to avoid paying licensing fees and to keep the Silverlight download file size as small as possible, he added.

"Silverlight isn't designed with an extensible codec model in mind, so there is no date/version announced for this," wrote Thapliyal. A second Silverlight 2.0 beta is due in May, and this version will be very similar to the final release, according to Thapliyal. He said no details are available about the roadmap for Silverlight for mobile, or Silverlight v.Next, also known as Silverlight 3.

Silverlight Release Candidate due before end of July

Microsoft expects to deliver the near-final test release of its Silverlight alternative to Flash before July is over, according to a blog posting from a Microsoft technical evangelist.

Microsoft officially unveiled the beta of Silverlight 1.0 at its Mix 07 conference in April. The company also announced at that time the availability of an alpha of Silverlight 1.1, which adds a built-in Common Language Runtime engine, plus support for ASP.Net Ajax, Language-Integrated Query (LINQ), JavaScript, Visual Basic, C#, Python and Ruby. (No update so far on the status of Silverlight 1.1.)

Users Itching for Silverlight 2.0

Microsoft continues to evolve its Silverlight cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for generating rich Internet applications and Web content, and users are anxiously awaiting the features due in the next release.

The Redmond, Wash., software giant released Silverlight 1.0 in September, along with a 1.1 update. Then on Nov. 29, Microsoft announced that it was renaming Silverlight 1.1 to Silverlight 2.0. And in addition to adding support for .NET, Microsoft is taking the next version of Silverlight further by adding a comprehensive control model, powerful skinning/theming, data binding and over 20 controls in the box, Microsoft said.

Although Microsoft has not set a specific date for when it will release Silverlight 2.0, the company expects to release a beta version with a Go-Live license during the first quarter of 2008most likely in time for its MIX 08 conference in early March.

Microsoft rechristens Silverlight 1.1 as Silverlight 2.0

Microsoft has decided the next version of its Silverlight Flash-competitor is more worthy of a 2.0 moniker than a 1.1 one.

On November 29, Developer Division General Manager Scott Guthrie blogged that Microsoft has decided to rechristen its next Silverlight release as 2.0. Microsoft plans to make a beta build of the next version of Silverlight available under a Go Live license in the first quarter of 2008, Guthrie added. (A Go-Live license allows users/developers to begin deploying applications in production based on the beta.)

Microsoft made an alpha version of Silverlight 1.1 (now Silverlight 2.0) available to testers in April 2007. The final version of Silverlight 2.0 is due out in 2008.

Silverlight 1.0 RC1 Now Available

As indicated in a previous post, we're homing in on the launch of Silverlight 1.0, and today marks another milestone with the launch of the first release candidate.

Since the beta we released at MIX, we've fixed approximately 2000 bugs and work items and we're now feature complete with the final JavaScript-based API. This version of the runtime is vastly more stable than the beta release: our stress test runs show improvements of two or three orders of magnitude in many cases, and the product demonstrates the polish one might expect from a near-final release.

Along with the 1.0 RC1 release, we've also refreshed the 1.1 bits. We've not exposed any significant changes in the .NET extensions, but the 1.1 "alpha refresh" includes the same core runtime as 1.0 RC1. A note on installation: if you have the beta release on your machine, there's no need to uninstall - simply run the RC1 installer and it will overwrite the existing binaries on your machine.

Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5 Reach Beta 2; Silverlight 1.0 Hits RC

No fewer than five major announcements in the development field are being issued by Microsoft this afternoon, the timing of which is by no means coincidental: On the top of the list, Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2008 -- which is quickly losing touch with its old code-name "Orcas" -- will be made generally available for download by this Friday, along with Beta 2 of .NET Framework 3.5.

But what developers have been itching to finally try is building applications for Silverlight - the company's new cross-platform graphical front-end module - under the auspices of Visual Studio.

Beginning this week, testers can finally build Silverlight applications as VS 2008 projects, by means of a Silverlight add-in. This while the JavaScript-oriented Silverlight 1.0 is upgraded to Release Candidate status, and the second-generation Silverlight 1.1 for statically-typed languages such as C++, moves from the alpha stage to an official Community Technology Preview.
