16.7.2008Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light
Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably
more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista
experience a tiny bit.
Real Desktop comes it two
forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and
with Light, not so much.
The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them
anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the
camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to
mess them up.

02.03.2008Windows 7 tip: Recycle Bin on your Windows 7 Taskbar
I'm not exactly sure when it became cool to abandon the use of your operating system's desktop, but a growing number of people these days
prefer the "clean" look. Recent releases of Microsoft Windows seem to encourage this. By default, Windows Vista and 7 strip the desktop of all icons
but the Recycle Bin. Try as you may, ignoring this lone icon is impossible. Sure, you can hide it in just a few seconds, but at the cost of losing
quick access to deleted files. You could also drag the Recycle Bin icon to the taskbar, but then it will appear pinned under Windows Explorer --
requiring an extra click to open and offering half the functionality.

15.09.2009Beautiful Windows Vista icons a double-edged sword
I admit it. I'm an iconphile. Back in the Windows 3.0 days, I used to go and change all my Windows icons by hand. I thought this was pretty
impressive. Admittedly, it didn't help me pick up women for some reason.
Since then, icons have come a very long way. A VERY long way.
With Windows Vista, the end-user icon experience out of the box is beautiful. But from an icon creator's point of view, the lack of backward
compatibility and effort to support has gone up tremendously. As a result, we've seen a lot fewer custom icons made for Windows Vista than one might
have expected.
Microsoft made three decisions with Windows Vista that will forever affect the way we look at icon making on Windows.

24.08.2007Are Vista icons facing the wrong way ?
No doubt you’ve all seen the “Computer” icon in Windows Vista. Some of you might have even clicked on it and few of you probably
have a shortcut on your desktop. But has it ever occurred to you it’s facing the wrong direction, away from you? At least one guy did, and this
is just one of the minor details under scrutiny at the Windows UX Taskforce that is particularly fascinating.
The problem is, by default,
Windows displays icons from left to right. Assuming the user sits in the middle of the monitor, the icons should in fact face right towards you and
not the edge of the monitor. The only icon in Vista off the top of my head which does this correctly are the “folders” icon which open up
towards the right. This actually conflicts with the official user experience guidelines suggesting the perspective of icons face left.
If
this isn’t weird enough, the Windows XP’s icons and even conceptual Vista icons designed by Iconfactory faced the right (pun) way. For
some unknown reason, Microsoft designers decided to flip them. Mac OSX icons face directly at you - probably the best solution.

Things can become very messy when you have lots of desktop icons, like mine below: Well, there's not that many on my desktop, but I still place

Windows places them in a separate order which it thinks to be right and then I move that shortcut icon to its appropriate group.

5219 is to date the most

quite a number of things that

15.09.2005Microsoft outlines Vista desktop search changes
Microsoft on Wednesday outlined the changes it plans to make to the desktop search feature in Windows Vista to satisfy antitrust concerns.
The software maker agreed in June to make the alterations to the way desktop search operates in response to concerns from rivals,
particularly Google.
The changes are coming with the first service pack to Windows Vista. Microsoft is launching a beta version
of the update in the next couple of weeks, with a final version expected early next year.
The search changes mean that, "in
addition to the numerous ways a user could access a third-party search solution in Windows Vista, they can now get to their preferred search results
from additional entry points in the Start Menu and Explorer Windows in Windows Vista with SP1," a Microsoft representative said in an e-mail to CNET
