5.12.2008Interview: What Vista SP1 means to you
The first service pack for Windows Vista is slated for release to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008. The announcement was made via Microsofts
Windows Window Vista Blog by Nick White, a product manager at Microsoft. We got a chance to sit down with White to talk about
SP1.
On the blog post, White made it a point to mention this service pack is quite different from other service packs offered for
previous versions of Windows. Microsoft is taking full advantage of Windows Update to send improvements to Windows Vista customers rather than relying
on one big service pack. That being said, the message for Windows Vista SP1 is dont expect new features, but some components do gain new
functionality.
So, the biggest question is what will be in Windows Vista SP1? The first is quality improvements (security,
reliability, and performance) including all previously released updates. Next, SP1 will include additional support for hardware and standards
including an Extensible Firmware Interface (ESO) and an Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT). Probably, the biggest group to benefit from Windows
Vista SP1 is administrators.

15.06.2007Windows Vista SP2 Sets Sail
Microsoft announced on their "Windows Team Blog" today, that Windows Vista's second Service Pack has RTM'ed! Including all of the updates that
were shipped with SP1, some new features, and native support for
more hardware, this service pack is definitely worth having a look at.
For now though, let's have a look at what it has in store:
- Windows Search 4.0 technology: Improved search speeds and more
relevancy in the search results.
- Full Bluetooth 2.1 support.
- Native Blu-Ray disc writing within Vista.
- "Windows Connect Now"
to simplify the process of connecting to various WiFi networks.
- Enabling of the exFAT filesystem.
With a single installer for
both the client and server editions, this update is incredibly easy for IT Pros to deploy. They can deploy the same update on their servers and client
machines; the installer detects which OS it's running on and installs the proper components.
Microsoft stresses that the compatibility
of Windows Vista and Windows 7 even before the update, is incredible; even more so after this second service pack. Upgrading from Vista to 7 once
it's released will be a sinch.
Microsoft expects the service pack to be publicly available in Q2 of 2009.

29.04.2009Performance Results Mixed with Vista Service Pack 1
Microsoft's newly released Service Pack 1 may solve some of the performance glitches that have annoyed Windows Vista users and discouraged others
from adopting the OS, but it doesn't appear from our initial tests to be a panacea.
In our first tests of the service pack, file
copying, one of the main performance-related complaints from Vista users, was significantly faster. But other tests showed little improvement and in
two tests, our experience was actually a little better without the service pack installed than with it.

07.02.2008Microsoft: XP SP3 won't
arrive until '07
Aiming to keep its focus on
Windows Vista, Microsoft is
now targeting 2007 for its
next Windows XP service pack
update.
In a
posting to its life cycle Web
site, Microsoft set a
preliminary date of the second
half of next year for the
release of Windows XP Service
Pack 3 for both home and
professional editions. That
puts its debut well past the
arrival of Vista, which is
slated for the second half of
this year and later than both
outsiders and some insiders
had originally
predicted.
"We
will be releasing another
service pack for XP over the
course of the product life
cycle, and we are tentatively
targeting the second half of
2007 for release," a
Microsoft representative said
in an e-mail to CNET News.com.
"However, right now our
priority is Windows
Vista--we'll have more
information to share about the
next service pack for XP after
Windows Vista ships." ..

18.01.2006Vista SP1 benefit will be stability and reliability, not performance
The problem is one of the major issues with Vista is performance...
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Will Vista SP1 and how this
wont bring any relief to those who find Vista a bit slow or sluggish? Not really, but then again service packs arent about performance increases;
theyre about reliability and stability.
Ive seen a lot of service packs in my time. Windows 95 and ME both got one service pack,
NT 4.0 saw six, Windows 2000 had four and XP has so far seen two. But what I dont remember regarding any of these service packs is installing it onto
a system and then seeing any significant boost in performance. Service packs dont really work that way. Sure, youll feel specific improvements as a
result of some of the tweaks and fixes contained in the service pack, and you might feel the benefit of having your operating system refreshed by
loading the service pack onto it, but a service pack should not be looked upon as a performance upgrade. If your system cant run an OS, what it needs
is upgrading or replacing, not the application of a service pack.

26.11.2007Vista SP1 Release Candidate Released to Public
Today, Microsoft made available the public release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1.
Service Pack 1 includes
several improvements to the operating system, including stability and performance fixes as well as many new features and enhancements. As with most
service packs, this release also includes all updates previously released for the operating system.
The service pack can be
downloaded via Microsoft Download Center or via Windows Update after applying a system patch (see links below).
As this is a
pre-release, there is an evaluation period. If you install the service pack, it will expire after June 30th, 2008. However, the final version of
Service Pack 1 is expected to be released in January.
Note: If you are running a 64-Bit edition of Windows Vista, the service
pack can only be downloaded from Windows Update.

08.08.2007Leaked Vista Hotfixes to be broadly available in the near future
Microsoft Corp. confirmed
today that the Vista hot-fix
packs that have leaked to the
Web will be issued to all
users.
"We
plan to make these two updates
broadly available via Windows
Update in the near future," a
company spokeswoman said in an
e-mail.
The
two updates, dubbed "Vista
Performance and Reliability
Pack" and "Vista
Compatibility and Reliability
Pack," were posted over the
weekend to a third-party
download site after being
leaked from a group of Windows
Server 2008 testers. The list
of fixes -- which include
performance improvements to
Vista's sleep mode and speed
increases in copying or moving
large directories -- led some
users yesterday to speculate
that the updates were the
forerunner of Vista Service
Pack 1 (SP1), a major upgrade
that many businesses want to
see before they widely deploy
the new operating system. ..

12.01.2008CNET Reviews Windows Vista SP1
A little more than one year after its release, Windows Vista will receive its first service pack update in March. Microsoft says the pack will offer
better compatibility with third-party hardware, increased reliability, tighter security, and better performance. But unlike the last Windows Service
Pack release, Windows XP SP2--which offered users a new Windows Firewall, an improved Automatic Updates feature, and a pop-up ad blocker for Internet
Explorer--Windows Vista SP1 is largely a code update, devoid of new eye candy, and very light on "must-have" features for home users. Most of the
features touted by Microsoft are for the Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions of the operating system. Our advice: Be patient, and don't
download it once it becomes available. Wait until Windows Vista SP1 is offered to your PC via Microsoft's Automatic Updates service.
