Windows Server 2008 R2 beta airs

Lost in the Windows 7 hype, Microsoft also released the beta of Windows Server 2008 R2, which is the companion to the client OS. But users who adopt both will get new security, network, and other features although some of those will require network upgrades like implementing IPv6. The R2 beta's integration with Windows 7 is high on the server's feature list.

Announcing Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Server 2008 R2 showed its pretty face at the Professional Developers Conference today, here in Los Angeles. Hi there, my names Oliver Rist and Im a new technical product manager on the Windows Server team. Im down here in La-La Land heaving great sighs of satisfaction as we unveil the first sneak peeks of pre-beta Windows Server 2008 R2. Though this release is right in line with our announced roadmap strategy for future Server releases, there are several items of note with R2:

First and foremost, 32-bit is done. History. Archives. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows OS platform to go 64-bit only, and frankly it was high time. Customers have been unable to purchase a 32-bit server CPU for over two years now, and the advancements in CPU architectures really dictated that we squeeze as much performance out of customers hardware purchases as possible. The move to 64-bit is a first step.

Youll also find that weve aligned R2 development around four core technology pillars...

Windows Server 2008 R2 to support up to 256 CPU cores

Microsoft said Thursday the next upgrade of its Windows Server operating system will scale up to 256 logical processors. Microsoft defines a logical processor as the number of physical processors multiplied by the number of cores as well as the number of threads, said corporate vice president for Windows Server and solutions, Bill Laing, during a keynote speech at the company's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC).

Thus, Windows Server 2008 R2 will be able to, for example, support a system with 64 physical processors each with 2 cores, each supporting 2 threads (64 x 2 x 2 = 256), said Laing. Windows Server 2008 today supports up to 64 logical processors.
