5.12.2007Identifying 32-bit Kernel Memory Issues
Clint Huffman: I'm a Premier Field Engineer (PFE) and I go onsite with customers on a regular basis to conduct Health Checks. This is my first blog
posting on TechNet, but I figured it would be on something important versus "Hello World". ;-)
More and more I am seeing
customers who are not aware of kernel memory issues on the 32-bit Windows architecture. If you are running 32-bit Windows 2000 or 32-bit Windows 2003,
then check the kernel memory. Lack of kernel memory can lead to system-wide hangs which seem unexplainable, so this is a serious issue. Always
generally use and/or recommend 64-bit or Windows Server 2008 server to avoid these issues (Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista have automatically
adjusting kernel memory pool sizes). This issue and other performance issues are addressed in the Vital Signs workshop (written by Shane Creamer),
which can be delivered by my team, Premier Field Engineering (PFE) - just contact your Technical Account Manager (TAM) if you are interested in this
course.
Here is a kernel memory chart for Windows 2003 Server...

29.08.2009Comparing running processes in Windows Server 2008 in Full and Core installs
Windows Server 2008 Server
Core installation is a minimal
install of the upcoming
Windows Server OS that can run
specific roles (like DNS,
Active Directory or File
Server) with a much smaller
footprint and attack surface.
In a previous blog post I
looked into overall image
sizes for both and also
discussed some of the details
about the differences between
these Full and the Core
installs. I later discussed
which files are on disk for
each one. Now I am looking at
the processes running in the
the two types of install.
This time I
actually installed a couple of
things on the servers before
looking at them. First of all,
I loaded the Virtual PC
virtual machine extensions.
Second, I loaded the DNS
Server roles (which is
available for both). I did not
furter configure the servers,
but used the systeminfo.exe
and tasklist.exe (which also
exists in both install) to
compare the differences in
loaded process, physical
memory and pagefile memory
used.
My
goal here is not to have very
precise lists, but to get a
feeling for how the two
installs compare. Also note
that Windows Server 2008 is in
pre-release format today
(there is a public Beta 3 and
an
MSDN-and-TechNet-subscribers-o
nly release called June CTP or
IDS3). Keep in mind that this
will most likely change before
final release. The information
here is based on an Enterprise
edition, June CTP install.

27.02.2008An Overview of Troubleshooting Memory Issues - Part Two
In our
last
post, we looked at some common memory issues and how to troubleshoot them. Today we're going to go over excessive paging and memory
bottlenecks.
We've talked about issues with the page file in several posts - something to bear in mind is that although you want
to have enough RAM to prevent excessive paging, the aim should not be to try to prevent paging activity completely. Some page fault behavior is
inevitable - for example when a process is first initialized. Modified virtual pages in memory have to be updated on the disk eventually, so there
will be some amount of Page Writes /sec. However, when there is not enough RAM installed, there are two issues in particular that you may see - too
many page faults, and disk contention.

18.10.2008Intel Preparing Several Nehalem Modifications
Intel processors from the
Nehalem generation that are
scheduled to appear in H2 2008
will exist in two
modifications: Socket H (LGA
715) and Socket B (LGA 1336).
This difference in the number
of pins is determined by
Intels decision to offer two
CPU modifications: with the
integrated three-channel
memory controller and without
it.
According to
The
Inquirer, Intel is not
hurrying to introduce
integrated memory controllers
and graphics cores all over
the place. The first
generation of desktop Nehalem
processors will use
traditional North Bridges with
the graphics core and the
memory controller integrated
into them. An exception will
be made, however, for server
Nehalem processors: they need
the integrated memory
controller to compete
successfully with the AMD
Opteron CPUs.
Desktop and mobile
Nehalem processors will have
no integrated memory
controller, or will have it
disabled. This way we can
clearly see that desktop
Nehalem processors will use
Socket H design, while their
server counterparts will work
in Socket B. The integrated
memory controller is also
expected to become an
attribute of the Extreme
Edition Nehalem processors.

16.08.2007Putting terabytes of memory into servers, the cheap way
Disk drives have only recently begun to be measured in terabytes. MetaRam CEO Fred Weber is talking about putting terabytes of memory into servers.
The San Jose, Calif.-based company, which is just coming out of stealth mode and has received money from three of the four founders
of Sun Microsystems, has devised a chipset that effectively lets computer makers or owners double or quadruple the amount of memory in their systems
fairly cheaply. A standard two-processor server on the market right now might have a ceiling of 64GB (gigabytes) of memory. By inserting DIMMs (dual
inline memory modules) equipped with MetaRam's chips into the same server, the capacity can go to 128GB or 256GB.

04.03.2009Microsoft: Windows Server 2008 Not Delayed
Speculation has been growing
in the media that Windows
Server 2008, formerly
codenamed "Longhorn," could
be delayed past its release to
manufacturing (RTM) date of
the second half of 2007, and
slip into 2008. Microsoft, on
its Windows Server Division
blog today, says "it just
ain't so."
The very
brief note reads in full:
"Today we noticed a couple
articles which have
incorrectly speculated about a
Windows Server 2008 delay.
Actually, we remain fully on
track for Windows Server
2008's release to
manufacturing in the second
half of 2007, with general
availability following after
that as usual."
Microsoft has given no
more specific timetable for
the new OS's release, but the
name gives a hint that it will
be released late in 2007 at
the earliest. Windows Server
2008 is currently in beta 3

Microsoft. ..
