Research: Microsoft Windows Vista Worth $120 Billion To Economy

Leave it up to an analyst firm to come up with some mind-boggling figures for people to parse. According to new research by IDC analysts, the total market around Windows Vista and the newly christened Windows Server 2008 will be more than $120 billion by the end of next year, including software and hardware designed for those operating systems.

"While it is easy to think of Microsoft as simply the world's largest software company, it is more than that," the Microsoft-sponsored report says. "It is an economic force that has a direct, positive impact on the economies in which it operates." That's positive without a value judgment, as in cash flow.

IDC estimates that for every $1 of revenue coming in to Microsoft for sales of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, around $18 will be available for "as many as 200,000" other companies to divvy up. There are a number of opportunities, from services to software to hardware to retail jobs selling and re-selling software and services. ..

Windows Vista Grace Period Extended to 120 Days

Every Vista DVD includes the ability to install any edition of Vista without a product key. When you install without a product key, you get an automatic 30 day evaluation period. This probably isn't news to anyone.

What may be news to you, however, is that you can easily extend the 30-day Windows Vista grace period to 120 days. No hacks required. This is an official, supported operation directly from Microsoft.

To extend the grace period another 30 days, simply start a command prompt as Administrator, and issue this command:

slmgr -rearm

Reboot for the change to take effect, and voila, you have 30 more days. You can only extend three times, so the total grace period for a Vista evaluation is 120 days.

Windows Server 2008 is in Escrow!

Windows Server 2008 has gone into the final test stages: Escrow. If all goes well it is expected the RTM build bits to be delivered on January 16th. After that all the teams working on Windows have to "sign off" the build (till Jan 23rd)

The week after that there will be "media verification" whatever that may be and then the Release To Manufacturing on February 6th.

We already know Windows Server 2008 build is in sync with Windows Vista Service Pack 1, so do the math.

February 27th is the worldwide launch of Windows Server 2008 together with Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 in Los Angeles. There will be launch events around that day all over the world.

SQL Server 2008 has not yet RTMed yet on its launch day!

WSUS 3.0 SP1 can be expected in this time frame too.

Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days

Official Way to Install and Use Windows Vista without Activation for Free for 120 Days

By default, Windows Vista can be installed, used and run without any license, product key or the need of activation for 30 days grace period, for purpose of trial or evaluation. Although Microsoft initially stressed that users should purchase a license with valid product key before the trial period expires, or else Windows Vista will lock into Reduced Functionality Mode. However, a "rearm" method has long since been discovered to be able to extend, or reset the remaining time for activation to another fresh 30 days, for up to 3 times.

Now Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months ( 3 rearms ), and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). All versions of Vista include Windows Vista Ultimate allow a 30-day free period without activation, except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial.

Windows Server 2008: Printer-Driver Packages

Day Twelve. We're almost halfway through our series. Today we'll continue on with our Printing theme - specifically, Printer-driver packages. We'll also provide some background on the driver store feature of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Printer-driver packages are digitally signed printer drivers that install all of the components of the driver to the driver store on computers running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. Using printer-driver packages on a print server that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 enables users who are not members of the local Administrators group to connect to the print server and install (or receive) updated printer drivers. Before we go too much further, let's go over the concept of the driver store.
