Who wants or needs 64 bits?

It looks like the world isn't clamoring for 64-bit desktops just yet.

Nearly two and a half years have passed since 64-bit processors started going into PCs. But the software to take full advantage of these chips remains scarce, and customers aren't buying much of what's out there. The 64-bit chips provide greater performance than their older 32-bit counterparts, but that's because of speed upgrades and other architectural enhancements.

Microsoft To Ship All OS Bits With Every Version Of Vista

Microsoft plans to market several versions of Vista but will distribute all of the OS bits with every product shipped so users can easily unlock and step up to more full-featured versions using electronic keys, sources said.

Oh yes, the Superbar is available in Windows 7 Build 6801

Wishing that the new "Superbar" was available for the PDC build of Windows 7? What about for your trusty copy of Vista? Well it isn't available for Vista yet (I am sure someone will whip up someway of porting it over) but it is available to all users who have a copy of Windows 7 Build 6801.

Rafael, the well known Ux theme patcher, from withinwindows.com, has uncovered how to bring this breakthrough feature available to anyone who is lucky enough to have Windows 7 build 6801. It does take some changing to the OS to enable this hidden feature but it is well worth it.

Windows 7's "Superbar" was demonstrated heavily at Microsoft's PDC. For more information and full demonstrations checkout our PDC section.

Windows 7 Build 6801 Tips and Tricks Guide

Chris Holmes and Kristan Kenney: Well its that time again. PDC has come and gone, and with it comes a build of the much anticipated Windows 7. Windows 7 delivers many new and interesting features, and in our opinion comes much closer to delivering on that wonderful Longhorn vision we saw at PDC 2003. The purpose of this guide is to offer insight into some of the cool new features in Windows 7 build 6801 and also to provide workarounds for some of the minor issues we encountered while using this build. Lets get to it then shall we?

Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too

Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement that was being shown off throughout the conference.

Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (withinwindows.com) has decrypted this mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801

Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch yesterday affecting a variety of Windows operating systems.

Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows 7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."

In a support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is 6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been screenshotted recently.

It is believed that the 6801 build is a milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.

Microsoft will be releasing the build to attendees at their professional developers conference next Tuesday.

Windows 7 pre-beta build: Whats inside

Microsoft isnt going to show Windows 7 to attendees of the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles until Tuesday, October 28. But new info about whats part of the pre-beta build that will be provided to show-goers is beginning to trickle out.

"According to a variety of sources, the build that will be distributed at PDC and, a week-plus later, at the companys Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) will be one of the M3 (Milestone 3) builds. Like the build that leaked in September, this will be a 6801 numbered build, sources say. But it doesnt seem to be the same one I saw a few weeks back. UX Evangelist blogger Stephen Chapman says it will likely be a 6801 M3 build which Microsoft finalized on October 20."

Microsoft guru Mary-Jo Foley sheds some light on what we can expect in the soon to come build. Read on at the source for a comprehensive list of expected new features.

Blue Badge patch for Windows 7 unlocks additional features

On November 2, Rafael Rivera, announced that his indications that the Windows 7 Pre-Beta Build 6801 has some locked additional options, were right. The locked content is primarily related to the UI that actually is one of the most looked-upon things in Windows 7. By his notices, it is not hard to conclude that some contents are locked with reason, because they are far away from stable, even for a pre-beta release.

He explained the type of protection that Win7 PB build 6801 has on his entry, and a way how he got to it. The entry also includes the way to get that content yourself.

By that scheme, an unlocking tool, called the Blue Badge is available for download. This tool should make the already announced steps much easier. Of course, this is still a risky operation, and you take it on your own risk.
These files are to be patched with Blue Badge. The patch is available only for x86 versions; the x64 is still not released.

If case you already have a superbar patch applied, Blue Badge will NOT work.

Microsoft admits Windows 7 torrents were inevitable

Microsoft released their Windows 7 M3 build 6801 at PDC last week and within 24 hours copies began to appear on popular bit torrent sites worldwide.

In a recent press roundtable, Microsoft executive Gary Schare, director of hardware ecosystem product management for the Windows client, acknowledged that the problem of bit torrent distribution was inevitable.

"Certainly when we went into an event saying 'OK, you have to come to an event to get the bits', you kind of know that someone is going to find a way to put that out there," Schare told APC, though he declined to comment on any specific legal actions Microsoft might take against downloaders: "I can't speak to what our legal team or anyone else has done."

The M3 build, released at last weeks PDC and WinHEC this week, does not require a serial to install therefore you can download and test the build freely.

Distribution to those wishing to install Windows 7 is probably a blessing in disguise for Microsoft. The windows team pools together a lot of data from Windows update and the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) so a broader range of feedback may assist with early issues. Many who install Windows 7 early are technical enough to deal with any early bugs and can provide essential feedback ready for the broad beta in early 2009.

On the other hand many in the 1000 strong Windows team may argue that this creates a lot of noise and too much broad feedback. The company may not require such broad feedback from non developers and hardware engineers for such an early build.

Microsoft has not provided a full schedule for the beta of Windows 7 but yesterday in a keynote at Microsoft's WinHEC conference, Steven Sinofsky hinted at there being 1 beta and 1 release candidate before RTM.

Windows 7 Build 6801 Desktop Slideshow

Chris Holmes: Well folks, were at it again. Last night I was having a discussion with Rafael Rivera and we got to wondering if there was something more that Microsoft was hiding away from us, using the same method as they did to tuck away the superbar. With that said, I started crawling my system with some tools to find references, as Rafaels laptop was acting up and my machine could accomplish the task much quicker. Completely to my suprise, the system pulled some results across many other files in the system. Upon examination, Rafael discovered that this all ties into a new feature that we assume will be called Desktop Slideshow. Think of this as a dreamscene-esque type feature but without the hassle and the chugging of your CPU if you try to play a video with any decent resolution.

Microsoft PDC attendees get 'the goods'

(The Windows 7 build attendees got is the September build 6801 that leaked out a month ago. The new taskbar and quite a bit of the other eye candy Microsoft showed off during the October 28 PDC keynote aren’t part of the pre-beta build.)

Vista SP1 gold bits on track for this week

After both public and private betas galore, Microsoft is set to make the final, gold Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 bits available, most likely this week.

Last week, I’ve been getting reports of SP1 bits being available on torrents. I asked Microsoft earlier last week if these builds were, as some were saying, the final Vista SP1 bits. And, as usual, the Windows client team wasn’t saying a whole lot.

On January 29, a Microsoft spokeswoman said Vista SP1 had yet to be officially released to manufacturing. The recent SP1 Release Candidate (RC) Refresh 2 is not the RTM build, the spokeswoman said. “And we’re not commenting on the build number,” she said, when I asked whether the “18000″ build number was the RTM version.

Shake up your Windows 7 with Aero Shake

One feature of the Windows 7 user experience that wasn't demoed or even talked about last week at PDC 2008 is called "Aero Shake" - the same feature that led Rafael on an epic journey to unravel the secrets of build 6801 superbar. What Aero Shake does is allows you to shake your application windows furiously, to quickly minimize all other windows, at the same time experiencing a seizure in your hand.

Its my pleasure to take a few minutes to outline some of these new features for you. Lessons learned from installing Windows 7, over 16 times

When the first Windows 7 beta (build 6801) was announced at PDC in late 2008, everyone was excited, myself included. Within a few days after release I was happily running my very first version of Windows 7. Right around new years day, Microsoft released the first public beta (build 7000) of the next gen OS. Since Microsoft was kind enough to share it with me, I decided to share it with everyone I know. Starting with my immediate family computers and expanding to my network of friends and coworkers. I went on a upgrading frenzy, installing Windows 7 on just about any PC I could get my hands on.
