Vista Service Pack 1: It lives

With all the Microsoft-created confusion out there around when — and even whether — the company plans to deliver the first service pack (SP) for Windows Vista, it’s nice to see some concrete proof that Vista SP1 does exist.

The http://www.winfuture.de/news,3 1801.html>WinFuture.de folks managed to grab a quick snapshot of a machine running a build of Vista SP1 during one of the Rally talks at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles this week. Plain as day, it says: “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.”)

I also saw a PowerPoint slide mentioning the existence of Vista SP1 during a WinHEC chalk talk on “The Future of Input” at this week’s show. (The context: A shim for the kernel-mode driver foundation version of the digitizer driver will ship as a Windows Driver Kit sample in Vista SP1. That was it.)..

Windows Vista Build 5361

Microsoft have announced via the Windows Vista beta newsgroups that the Windows Vista April CTP will be available to testers on Monday 17th April. The build number that the April CTP will carry is not yet known, however a set of screenshots< /a> have appeared on the web today, showing Windows Vista Build 5361 - a build that has recently been handed out to TAP testers.

The build string of this release is 5361.winmain.060405-1900, indicating that the build was compiled last Tuesday. The build contains further performance tweaks and a few new features, including a few new gadgets as well as re-worked existing gadgets. Interestingly, Internet Explorer now shows the logo "7+" in the About screen, it is not yet known exactly what this symbolises.

Windows 7 Build 6936 Screenshots Emerge

WinFuture.de has posted a surprise gallery of the taskbar in Windows 7 build 6936. Several new things can be spotted in this gallery, such as:

- Updated graphics, for both the task area as well as the notification icons
- Aero Peek no longer shows the stream
- New fish wallpaper

You can also see that the non-Aero UI has a few quirks outside of the taskbar area, but that is to be expected in a pre-beta build.

Windows Vista Build 5487 Screenshots Released

Wednesday Winfuture.de, a German Windows enthusiast site, released a slew of screenshots of the recently aquired 5487 build of Windows vista.

It appears that the new task bar and sidebar have still yet to have been included, but you will notice a few changes here and there. The welcome screen appears to have been overhauled with many new features adding an "Offers from Microsoft" panel which gives quick access to many new Windows Live services such as Messenger, Mail Center (still currently known as Mail Desktop Beta) and OneCare.

Another thing you will spot is a slightly tuned interface in Media Center, nothing big as it appears they just tweaked the drop shadows and a few graphics.

Although the new sidebar didn't make an appearance in this build, some redesigned gadgets did. The system performance and weather gadget have been redesigned as well as the stocks gadget.

Last but not least is the new voice recognition feature (or after a bad performance at a Microsoft Conference last week, voice wreck-ognition may be a more appropriate term.) Voice recognition allows you to control the system and take notes by using audio commands which the system recognizes.

If you've been following things in SP1 land, you'll notice that's actually ahead of the neat and tidy Windows Update launch for non-x64 systems, but behind the unofficial options already available.

AMD and Seagate demo 6Gbps Serial ATA

Today AMD and Seagate are teaming up to demonstrate the next-generation Serial ATA specification. Dubbed SATA 6Gbps, the new spec will offer twice the disk-to-host bandwidth of the existing 3Gbps Serial ATA standard. Although the fastest Serial ATA hard drives on the market have a rough time maintaining transfer rates higher than about 110MB/s, they can typically push smaller burst transfers from their caches at over 250MB/s. Those caches are growing, with the latest desktop models packing 32MB memory chips. And let's not forget solid-state drives like Intel's X25-E Extreme, which has no problem sustaining over 200MB/s for reads and writes.

Vista Service Pack 1 Exists

WinHEC 2007:

Given all the mumbo-jumbo coming from the Windows brass lately about SP1, people were starting to wonder whether Microsoft might to try to go without one and just use Automatic Update and Windows Update Services to roll out all of the Vista fixes and updates. I guess this evidence clears all of that up!

Windows Vista Build 5728 Availability Window Closing Soon

Nick White has posted this on the Vista team blog yesterday, thought I'd give everyone who is interested in testing the latest build of Vista a heads up on the limited availability.

Per my post from last week, I've got some news for you regarding the release of interim build 5728:

If you've not yet downloaded the build, I would suggest doing so today.

Windows Vista DVD hologram explained

An astute Windows user was intrigued by the holographic image on the face of the Windows Vista Business DVD and decided to take a much closer look, discovering in the margin a microscopic photograph of three men. Just who they could be? The user posted a blog entry mentioning the discovery, which was noticed by a few others in the community and has prompted a number of people to contact us in Windows to find out just exactly what is going on.

The real story is interesting, but conspiracy theorists will be disappointed to learn that it is not the result of a deliberate attempt to deceive. The photo displays members of the team who worked on the Windows Vista DVD hologram design. Microsofts Anti-Piracy Team designed a counterfeit-resistant digital "watermark" for the non-encoded surface of Windows Vista DVDs.

The photo in question is only one of multiple images contained in the hologram design, all of whose inclusion serves to make it more difficult to replicate a Windows Vista DVD. The other images are of old master works of art that are in the public domain. These images are part of numerous other security measures that have been designed into our media, packaging and certificates of authenticity. Hence, even though this image has been reproduced on the Web, there are many other features providing further security. ..
