Office 2008 for Mac Sneak Peek Kick-Off

At the beginning of August I told you that we'd start communicating more about Office 2008 in September. Well, it's September, and I am back here on Mac Mojo to kick-off the next wave of information on Office 2008.

We know that there are many Mac Mojo readers out there that need to start planning Office 2008 deployment in their organizations. As we start to share information, well focus on some information that will help you start thinking about your enterprise deployment alongside some deeper dives into some of the new features in Office 2008.

We have invested in Exchange support in Entourage for the past four years, and continue to do so in Office 2008. I think Entourage 2008 users in Exchange environments will find this the most reliable version to date - I have been living in daily builds of Entourage for over two months now, and I am delighted with the stability and reliability of our Exchange support and how well the calendar interoperates with my assistant, who uses Outlook.

Microsoft to kill Hotmail via Outlook Express on September 1

If you're still using Outlook Express for checking your Windows Live Hotmail, listen up. Microsoft will be cutting off your access in three months. On September 1, 2009, the support for Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), the protocol that Outlook Express and a handful of older clients currently use to access Hotmail, will be discontinued. As Neowin reported in April of last year, Microsoft originally planned to cut off access for Outlook Express users on June 30, 2008. However the WebDAV protocol got a stay of execution after users complained that it was too soon. Microsoft's management agreed and gave users another year to make the migration.

How Microsoft Can Save Vista And Windows Server 2008

Mitchell Ashley: Over the weekend my son Phil and I built a computer and a server for the test lab I use in my business (building computers is also a hobby we share). One of the machines was a Vista box, the other was a server which I'm testing the Windows Server 2008 RC-1 Hyper-V software that came out last Thursday. I'm sure I'll be writing about the Hyper-V RC-1 software in several upcoming blog posts.

It caused me to think about 2008 and to look back at the 2007 ups and downs of Vista since its introduction earlier in the year. The Vista SP1 service pack is coming in February 2008, while at the same time Vista is being compared to Windows ME, another Windows operating system Microsoft "didn't get right".

Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista

It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.

Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008 includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.

A Microsoft employee and third party website have created tutorials on how to use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.
