Windows Vista's new security features
Microsoft's new operating system won't be out until late 2006, but here's a look at some of the new security features expected.
It seems that every time I sit down with Microsoft to discuss Windows Vista, something has been changed or added, which is good. In some cases, something has been removed, which is bad. One and a half years from launch, I understand that beta code changes frequently. Here's my standard disclaimer: the following article is based on the last build from Microsoft, Windows Vista build 5219, released September 2005.

16.07.2008Microsoft: No IE 8 tab-hang fix in the works
Back in May, the Internet Explorer (IE) team left open the possibility that
Microsoft might deliver a tab-responsiveness update for those of us suffering from IE 8 tab-performance issues.
Alas, that update isnt going to happen. Based on feedback from Windows 7 testers, Microsoft has scotched the idea. Not only is there no tab-hang
reporting functionality for the IE 8 release that is built into Windows 7, but there wont be any for us IE 8 users running Windows XP or Vista,
either.

05.05.2009IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal
In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the
default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

03.09.2007Tracing the memory leak: Is it Firefox 3?
Yesterday, we mentioned that we've been noticing recent versions of Firefox, including 3.0.5, have exhibited the memory leak problems that used to
plague Firefox 2. We are noticing this on both Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1.
We'd also noticed that systems where the add-on Tab Mix Plus
was installed, did not appear to exhibit the same memory leak. Today, we uninstalled Tab Mix Plus (reluctantly, because we like it) from one system.
On that system, the memory use pattern has
changed, perhaps moderated, though we're not sure the leak has gone away. It now appears to be
slower than in our tests yesterday, and from time to time, something in Firefox does clean up parts of memory from time to time. In one test,
we had two Firefox windows open with seven tabs open in one of them, a dozen in the other -- a pretty full slate. Task Manager is showing us that
Firefox grabs memory in one-megabyte chunks per second, for about a minute at a time, and then leveling back out to about 300,000 KB.
So if
it's not a leak right now, at least it's a
fight, and we'll let you know what else we find...

20.01.2009IE8 to be More Reliable
In a post on the IEBlog today, the development team announced some brand new features to IE8, which they say will improve the browser's reliability.
The most notable improvement is dubbed "Loosely-Coupled IE" (or "LCIE" for short). LCIE essentially splits the browser into several
pieces, therefore should one part of the browser crash, the rest of the browser can continue to function. So say a web page you are currently viewing
in one tab locks up, in IE7, this would mean all other tabs are locked as well, however with IE8; the remaining tabs are still accessible and fully
functional.
Another anticipated feature is the new Automatic Crash Recovery, in which IE8 is capable of recovering any tab, as well as
any unsaved form data within that tab, should it crash.
For details outlining the remaining features, continue reading at the IEBlog.

29.07.2008More details on Windows Server
2003 SP2
Microsoft revealed more
details today about Windows
Server 2003's next Service
Pack, currently under an
ongoing beta-test.
"I know SP1 to
Windows Server 2003 made some
pretty big changes to the way
we do security and it
introduced a cycle of
application testing and some
compatibility issues?.this
was, however, a necessary evil
needed to address server
security," , said an employee
using the team blog.
Essentially, Service
Pack 2 is, as planned, a pack
of fixes since the last
release (R2), but also
includes some changes that
would likely ease transition
between it and Windows Vista,
or its Server counterpart,
still codenamed "Longhorn".
The change log also includes
updates to Remote Installation
Services, now known as Windows
Deployment Services, Microsoft
Management Console 3.0, and an
improved firewall.
For the first time
in ages, the msconfig tool
will be updated. "An
additional tab which provides
a single launching point for
common support tools that will
ease the discoverability of
common diagnostic
functionality.", Ralston
says.
On
another note, Service Pack 2
will update all version of the
OS, along with Windows XP x64
Edition.

The most recent federal disclosure forms offer a stark reminder of Microsoft Corp.'s mighty Washington presence: The software giant's tab of almost

23.04.2009Mozilla Releases Alpha of Next Firefox
Mozilla Corp. has released the first preview of
Firefox
3.1, the fast-track update that the open-source company has pegged with a late 2008 or early 2009 ship date. Code-named "Shiretoko," named for a
national park on Japan's northern-most island of Hokkaido, Firefox 3.1 Alpha 1 was delayed several days because of a last-minute bug found in the
Mac OS X version.
Firefox 3.1 Alpha 1 includes some, but not all, of the features Mozilla hopes to add to the update as work continues.
Among the noticeable changes: several improvements to the address bar, which Mozilla dubs the "Smart Location Bar" in recognition of the search
enhancements it received in Firefox 3.0; and changes to tab-switching.
Pressing Ctrl-Tab in Alpha 1 switches between current and
last-viewed tabs rather than simply moving to the next tab to the right. Thumbnails of each page are also now displayed for easier recognition. Like
many of the features slated for Firefox 3.1, the revised tab-switching was originally meant to be included with Firefox 3.0, but had been dropped
during development to keep that June version on schedule.

04.08.2008Multi-processor support coming for Firefox
Mozilla has started
a new project to make Firefox split in several processes at a time: one
running the main user interface (chrome), and another or several others running the web content in each tab. Like Chrome or Internet Explorer 8 which
have implemented this behavior to some degree, the main benefit would be the increase of stability: a single tab crash would not take down the whole
session with it, as well as performance improvements in multiprocessor systems that are progressively becoming the norm.
