16.03.2006New search site - Imagine Live Search
A new Live Search site
was brought to our attention
recently (thanks Jamie),
http://search.imagine-liv
e.com/. What's obviously
different is the sparse
homepage, notably the lack of
vertical search options, which
directs the users focus to the
search box and nothing
else.
Diving
in further, search results are
different too. There are no
vertical search options
present under the search box,
however they appear in the
right hand column with
suggested results
pre-populated. Users can see
the results from these other
search options alongside the
main web search results,
allowing users to quickly
refine their query as they
become more aware of what each
search option offers them.
While the related
searches option is already
present on the main Live
Search site, the addition of
Image Search and News Search
is a nice touch. The great
part is that Windows Live Maps
is embedded, auto-detecting
your location and presenting
local search results based on
your query. ..

If you entered long queries in a Google search box, you would notice that it's difficult to edit them because Google optimized the size of the box

Yahoo! shares drop 10% on news of Microsoft search deal

Volume is the number of shares traded in a particular security during a given period of time. Microsoft and Yahoo! both announced a search deal
where Yahoo search results will be "powered by Bing" starting next year. However, share prices aren't Yahoo's only problem from the new
deal.

Google offers search within search
Imagine searching inside Wikipedia or Amazon.com, but on the Google search site. Google's got a test going of a way to search inside different sites
from within a Google Web search results page. If you type in "amazon," "wikipedia" or "new york times" on Google, it brings up the relevant
result at the top and immediately underneath is a second search box. If you type a keyword in that secondary search box it will return results from
within that site.

FedEx Integrates Virtual Earth
Federal Express has launched their new drop box locater service using
Virtual Earth. Search for the nearest drop boxes and you'll get a resulting list of locations. Near the top of the result list is a "View Area Map"
link which opens up a div containing a Virtual Earth map plotting each of the drop box locations and a legend. You can also check or uncheck different
types of results such as "FedEx Staffed," "Self-Service," and "FedEx Authorized Ship Center." You can then update the results for the list and
the map. Each location on the map contains a popup with the location name and address.
From the list of results you can also link off to a
page with a map and driving directions. Pretty nice looking locator. I'll be expecting more robust functionality such as finding locations along a
route or drag and refresh maps; and/or, detailed information in the popups such as hours of operation and a click to call phone number. All in time, I
suppose.

Federating Windows Search with Enterprise Data Sources
Steven Sinofsky: The Windows Explorer has evolved by enabling you to find all sorts of content by searching for it. Many of you have used the search
features in Windows Vista (based on our instrumented data) from the start menu or from the search box in Explorer. It has been a long time since most
of us could remember where everything is by carefully managing our folder hierarchy and finding things based on file name alone. We often rely on
domain specific search (in music players, mail clients, photo clients) but with Windows Vista and Windows 7 we make it possible to search within a
namespace and across namespaces. This post is about a new feature based on Search that allows searching across PCs and even servers in an Enterprise
setting. Alwin and Scott, program managers, and Brandon, a developer, on the Find and Organize feature team authored this post.

Microsoft goes social with Outlook 2010
As part of Microsoft's Office 2010 announcements today the company has taken the wraps off a number of social networking add-ins that will be
available for Outlook 2010. Outlook 2010 features a new Outlook Social Connector (OSC) straight into Outlook 2010. The connector provides a stream of
content from SharePoint, Windows Live and other social networking sites. At the bottom of Outlook emails users will be provided with contacts latest
social networking posts. The presence of social networking inside Office 2010 is part of a broad strategy that Microsoft is implementing. The next
version of Windows Live Messenger will also feature a social stream within the client, similar to the OSC.

Microsoft releases stand-alone Outlook with CRM built-in
This morning, Microsoft has come up with a new approach to the problem for which some Outlook users have been asking for over a decade: It's amending
Outlook to be able to handle business contacts in a relational manner -- for example, to group customers by the contact who brought them to you, or to
maintain custom data on those customers. Contact management is being built directly into Outlook.
But there's a catch: Microsoft
Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, as the product will now be known, is a separate version of Outlook that will be integrated,
starting today, into Office Small Business, Professional, and Ultimate editions. For those who already have Office editions with the pre-existing
Outlook 2007, or who purchase Outlook or Office without the Business Contact Manager, the new version will be available separately as a replacement
for $149.95.

Just Browsing Around - Searching with Google Chrome's Omnibox
You can look in pretty well any recent browser and they'll all have one thing in common, the search box. They've all got it, they're all in the
same place and they all work the same way. But there is one exception; Google Chrome.
Google Chrome's search box doesn't work quite the
same way as you would come to expect in Internet Explorer or Firefox. In fact, Google Chrome doesn't even have a search box. Heck, it doesn't even
have an address bar. Instead, it has what Google has dubbed an "Omnibox"; an ingenious two-in-one solution. Working as both the address bar and the
search box, the Omnibox provides you with much more screen real estate for both your searches and browsing history and faster access to your search
providers of choice.
