ATI to roll out five new chipsets for AMD M2 platform in 2006

ATI Technologies is gearing up to introduce a lineup of five new chipsets for the AMD Socket M2 K8 platform in 2006, industry sources indicated. The upcoming chipsets will be manufactured at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the sources noted.

In 2006, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will adopt the M2 940-pin design for all of its single- and dual-core desktop processors, as reported on May 9.

ATI is preparing the RD580 and RD580C for the high-end segment, with the chipsets supporting ATI???s crossfire dual-graphics card technology, the source indicated. The two solutions will compete against Nvidia's nForce4 SLI (scalable link interface) series. According to ATI???s roadmap, volume production is slated for the end of this year, but sources stated the company will need to adjust its roadmap and bring it in line with AMD???s M2 launch schedule...

Mobo makers: AMD???s Socket M2 to simplify next-generation CPU

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to simplify its 90nm CPU platform with its 940-pin Socket M2 CPU design, according to motherboard makers. As Intel schedules to unify desktop PC- and notebook-use processors in the second half of 2006, AMD is looking to standardize a full CPU line for entry-level, middle-range and high-end segments, indicated the makers.

AM D Taiwan declined to comment on the report.

AMD???s Socket M2 CPU line will originally target the high-end market, the makers said, noting that the chip vendor has informed them that the 940-pin platform will also be released for the mainstream and entry-level segments next year. AMD is now delivering samples of the next-generation CPU to its downstream customers, the makers added.

During the platform migration, products that support the new Socket M2 and the old Socket 939 and 754 will still be on the market by the end of 2006, according to motherboard makers. The makers expect that AMD???s CPU standardization will help reduce production and handling costs...

Samsung LCD Boasts 100,000:1 Contrast With Local Dimming LED

Unlike with conventional LCD panels that use cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights which have a constant light source, local dimming LED backlighting allows the backlight to be turned off in dark image areas, resulting in a "true black".

Samsung unofficially took the wraps off a 40-inch LCD HDTV featuring 500 cd/m2 of brightness, 180-degree viewing angle and a 1366 x 768 pixel (720p) HD resolution. The widescreen panel also claims to offer an impressive 100,000:1 contrast ratio, achieved using with local dimming. The hardware company also showed off a 2560x1600 (WQXGA) resolution 30-inch LED-backlit model featuring 16.7M colors, 300cd/m2 brightness, 6ms response, 180-degee viewing angle and a 900:1 contrast ratio. A 15.4-inch 1440x900 resolution LED-backlit LCD which offers 330cd/m2 brightness, 262k colors and a covers 45% of NTSC color gamut, is only 5.8-mm thick and has a 3.1W power consumption, making it perfect for notebooks.

Dell Announces LED Flat Panel Monitors

Today, Dell announced their new line of LED backlit monitors, the G2210 (22") and the G2410 (24"). While these monitors do use LED backlighting unlike the UltraSharp line, this new line uses lower quality display panels.

Both new displays feature a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, an ambient light sensor, 5ms response time, and brightness of 250 cd/m2. Additionally, DVI-D and VGA connectors are included with each. HDCP will only be available the 24" model. The two monitors have rather average resolutions, 1680x1050 on the 22" and 1980x1080 on the 24".

Reported last month, Dell stated that they will be significantly reducing packaging materials. Living up to the claim, these monitors are 20% smaller and 28% lighter than comparable monitors.

The two will be shipping in late February for $279 and $359.

Microsoft reconfirms Windows 7 for 2010 launch

Paul Miller: It's all a silly misunderstanding, we tell you. Microsoft has been holding fast to its "three years" development time frame for Windows 7 since forever, the problem is that it's never been clear when that three year period started. Well wonder no longer, Microsoft has finally officially confirmed that the three years started at Windows Vista's general availability release, which was January 30th, 2007. Obviously that doesn't mean will have Windows 7 on midnight of January 30th, 2010, but it does mean we can look forward to sometime within that year for a release. Microsoft plans to give an exact release date only once Windows 7 "meets its quality bar for release." Sounds like a good metric to go by, if you ask us.

SED Televisions to Enter Production in 2008

It's the technology that Canon and Toshiba have been touting as the ultimate combination of flat panel size with CRT image quality. SED (Surface-conduction Electron emitter Display) replaces the one large cathode ray tube found in large bulky CRT televisions with tiny electron emitters in the number of one for every pixel. When will this miracle technology be available for the public to buy en masse? Well, the first model, a 55" 1080p display, has finally been announced and will enter mass production in the first quarter of 2008. I know, I know, you guys want the numbers. Well, as stated, the display will be full on 1080p resolution and will sport a brightness level of 450cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 50,000:1. Combine those specs with a 1ms response time and you have the early makings of an amazing display.

Intel CPUs expand Suns workstation portfolio

Following servers with Intels Xeon processors, Sun today introduced workstations based on Intels Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.

Sun now has a third workstation family, adding to the existing models based on single- and dual socket AMD Opteron-based systems (Ultra 20, Ultra 40 M2) as well as single- and dual-socket UltraSparc IIIi (Ultra 25, Ultra 45) models. The new Ultra 24 is based on Intels Core processors and, in the case of a Core 2 Quad configuration, is Suns first (single-socket) quad-core workstation.

The Ultra 24 has the identical outside look of its two sister models, making the Intel Core 2 logo the only differentiator to the 20, 40, 25 and 45. The Intel system is based on the single-socket Garlow platform supporting six different processors “ the dual-cores E4400, E6750 and E6850 (2.0 GHz “ 3.0 GHz) as well as the quad-cores Q6600, Q6700 and QX6850 (2.4 GHz “ 3.0 GHz).

Windows 7: The Anti-Vista?

Mary Jo Foley: Even with Windows Vista’s one-year anniversary launch just a week away, all that anyone in the tech-enthusiast community seems to want to talk about is Windows 7 (Except for those who are already sick of hearing about 7, as one Windows user characterized himself in a conversation I had yesterday.)

There are Windows 7 screen shots, Windows 7 videos, Windows 7-Windows Live-integration to-do lists. And of course, there is the infamous Milestone 1 (M1) Windows 7 build out there, with M2 and M3 successors due out later this year, if rumored roadmaps are to be believed.

Some pundits believe Microsoft is trying to stoke the Windows 7 fires to “build excitement” for its next Windows release. I don’t think this is the case at all. I think Microsoft wants to smother the Windows 7 flames and to dampen expectations as much as possible.

Windows 7 in 2009? Be careful what you wish for

Take it as a sign that Windows Vista failed to capture the
imagination of Windows users, or take it as a sign that sensationalism sells. Either
way, the rumor mill is heating up with claims that the successor to Windows
Vista—currently dubbed Windows 7—could be released as early as next year, as
opposed to sometime in 2010, as currently expected.

The scuttlebutt (condensed): some users have seen early
builds of Windows 7, including a
poster at Neowin
. Ars Technica has also seen an older build, as we told you
about more
than a month ago
. A more recent build was reportedly described as Milestone
1. APC Magazine claims to have
seen a roadmap
which puts M2 in an April/May timeframe, and a M3 in the
third quarter of this year. All of this points to a late 2009 release, they
say, which is indicated by this "road map."

Arguing about whether or not Windows 7 will ship in late
2009 is pointless. No one can predict the future, and Microsoft's own history
shows that its roadmaps and predictions are not to be trusted. A more
interesting question is: should
Microsoft be aiming for late 2009?
