Color profiles turned on for Firefox 3.1

The latest Firefox 3.1 (codenamed Shiretoko) nightlies, now come with color management support enabled by default.

When a capture device (like a scanner or camera) produces a digital image it may be able to include as part of the image metadata, a definition of how its color codes correspond to a standardized colors definition. This mapping is called a color profile and contains valuable information on how to exactly replicate the colors as “seen”by the capture device.

Network Monitor 3 One Click Capture Tool - BETA Available

Wish you could get a network capture from a computer with no capture software installed? Wish you could have a network traffic "flight recorder" on a USB key? Here's your answer!"

The motivation behind creating this tool was to provide an extremely simple way to get a trace from an end user. And the name says it all, though maybe a small bit of false advertisement as it may take a bit more than just one click :). Once you have it downloaded to your machine, you can launch the executable and it will lead you through some simple dialogs that install the tool and start a trace. Once the trace is complete, which means it was manually stopped by the user or the default time of 2 hours have passed, a window will be opened to the location for the capture, called OneClick.cap.

<...>

Obtaining the Tool

At this point we are beta testing the tool. So the only means of getting it is on the Network Monitor project on http://connect.microsoft.com. When you join the project, you will see both the Auto-run and Extract Only packages in the download section. Once we release the tool, we will make it available on the Microsoft Download site as this is more convenient, which is our goal for this tool.

Microsoft introduces "talking about Windows" site

Microsoft yesterday revealed yet another community based site based on the company's popular operating system, Windows. In the past the software giant has introduced Channel9, On10, The Hive and Windows Team Blog all with the intention of creating a buzzing community discussing Windows. Microsoft's latest venture sees Mark Russinovich, Technical Fellow, Jon Devaan, Sr VP Windows Operating System and Rich Coulter, SCCM Administrator for Pella talking about Windows. The site features videos and discussions from the Microsoft employees focusing on how they influence versions of Windows and the work involved. It remains to be seen if this latest community site will be a big hit or simply fade away like UltimatePC.com and The Hive.

Microsoft Patches Blocked for Some Admins

Microsoft on Monday said it is working on a patch to correct an issue that has rendered some administrators using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 unable to download and install last week's security updates. On Friday evening, Redmond confirmed what it called "a deployment issue affecting customers using System Center Configuration Manager 2007 servers with Systems Management Services 2003."

"Our initial investigation has shown the issue only affects Configuration Manager 2007 customers; no other detection or deployment technology is affected," wrote Christopher Budd, security response communications lead for Microsoft, in an e-mail on Friday to Redmondmag.com. "Additionally, only customers who are running Configuration Manager 2007 servers with SMS 2003 clients are affected."

Once dubbed Systems Management Server, SCCM helps corral components and settings for system administrators who maintain large groups of Windows-based machines. Among the program's chief attributes is that it enables administrators at a given enterprise to perform patch management, software distribution and operating system deployment in addition to keeping track of hardware and software inventory. In response to user complaints, on Friday Redmond issued Security Advisory (954474), which offers guidance to clients and channel partners running the program.

Phase one: Capture one V4 has a new beta

James O'Neill: Hot on the heels of the announcement that Phase one and Microsoft had entered an alliance I got a mail to tell me about Capture one 4 beta 2. The web site has one of the most annoying bits of flash I've seen a while. There's a control to turn the cheesy music off but you can't do anything about the loud "tock" that's emitted when you hover over anything.

It looks like the UI has had a major re-vamp -which it puts me in mind of Adobe LightRoom (which I still haven't bought for myself). Functionally it hasn't changed much: but a nice feature is you can have multiple variants of the processing for the same RAW image. This means that you can keep a set of processing changes and try something different. It's able to straighten pictures now (why it wasn't before I don't know), and can handle DNG. But it still can't print as far as I can tell it has no answer for Lightroom's lovely back and white handling and split toning. Give me those things and and a clone / healing brush and I can work in a single program.

Microsoft Sets Fall Launch for Configuration Manager

Microsoft Monday said development is complete on its System Center Configuration Manager 2007, a cornerstone in its model for managed IT systems, and that the management tool will ship in November. For users moving from the pervious version called System Management Server the release represents an upgrade, but for those tracking Microsoft's Dynamic Systems Initiative (DSI), a 10-year plan to build a management platform for Windows, it represents a beginning and an end.

SCCM 2007, which was released-to-manufacturing Monday, is key to the company's far-reaching DSI plan and is the third product that Microsoft has shipped that supports its System Definition Model (SDM) language. SDM is a linchpin in DSI, serving as the foundation that servers and applications use to define their optimum health and operational needs and communicate that data to the network.

AMD Brings HDTV, DVR Capabilities To PCs

AMD has introduced two new solutions to offer high-definition television (HDTV) viewing and digital video recording (DVR) capabilities on desktop and notebook PCs.

With the external plug-and-play ATI TV Wonder 600 USB, a desktop or notebook PC easily becomes a feature-rich DVR for HDTVs. Both products come with AMDs Catalyst Media Center software and integrate seamlessly with Windows Vista Media Center and Windows XP Media Center Edition.

"More and more, customers are using the PC as a digital hub for TV and video capture and these solutions put The Ultimate Visual Experience in reach of almost any PC user,ť said Matt Skynner, vice president, marketing, graphics product group, AMD. śThese new HDTV tuner products provide a perfect complement to AMDs graphics solutions, AMD LIVE! platforms and AMD Turion 64 mobile technology-based notebooks “ delivering simplified home theatre PC options that come together for uncompromising visual quality and ease of use."..

Team Fortress 2 Goldrush

New Map. New Gameplay. New Medic Achievements & Milestones

Goldrush is an entirely new level featuring a new gameplay style called Payload.

The level is split into three separate areas with capture zones inside of each major chapter. The teams are split between offense (blu) and defense (red) similar to dustbowl.

The goal for the blu team is to push the bomb payload throught the level until it reaches the next capture point, eventually destroying all three of the red teams major bases. Blu pushes the level by standing near it, and the cart will move faster the more people standing near it, which is a concept familiar to anyone who plays team based multiplayer games. If no one has pushed the cart forward after 30 seconds, the cart will begin to move backward until it is pushed forward again. This makes for some very concentrated and hectic exchanges indeed.
