Using Windows XPe to create a home media server

Windows Media Player 11 now features the Home Media Ecosystem (HME), which lets a Windows-based system serve streaming media to client devices. One great way to deploy an HME server is via a Windows XP Embedded (XPe) image, according to a new article by Microsoft's Alex Gimenez.

"XPe's Windows XP Embedded Update Rollup 1.0 makes it fairly easy to configure and use HME on Windows Embedded systems," writes the Windows XP Embedded (XPe) team developer on the XPe team blog. "This turns Windows Media Player into the core of a set-top-box system."

To build an image with HME, Gimenez writes, developers simply create an XPe image that includes the Windows Media Player 11 and the Winlogon components. All other dependencies will be brought in upon dependency resolution, including the new Windows Media Format Runtime 11 component.

Hypervisors in Embedded Systems

Mike Glass: I attended Embedded World in Nurnberg last week. The number one application I saw over and over again was embedded devices based on multi-core processors. If you think of Microsofts entire range of embedded operating systems “ Micro-framework at the low end, Windows CE (the only real-time OS (RTOS)), and Windows XP; I expect multi-core processors to target systems built for Windows XP Embedded (XPe) first. This is because the cost of a multi-core processor is higher than a single-core and at least for now more likely in systems that can absorb the roughly $55 cost of an XPe client. But the interesting twist is that the value of multiple cores is that you can run an RTOS in one or more cores and run XPe in other cores. XPe would be used to run Windows applications “ say some kind of Human Machine interface (HMI), where the RTOS would run a factory control application that requires a guarantee of a processors time slice at some frequency that only Windows CE could deliver (or RTOS competitors like WindRivers VxWorks or a custom Linux solution).

Running XP Embedded on Asus's Eee mini-laptop

Asus's two-pound Eee mini-laptop first shipped last November, running Linux via a 4GB SSD (solid-state disk). It's now available with Windows XP as well, still running from the SSD. In addition, an upgraded version with a nine-inch screen, the Eee PC 900 , will ship with XP this summer.

Said to be the largest, costliest extravaganza in Olympic history, the ceremony was watched by 91,000 people at Beijing's National Stadium and a potential audience of 4 billion worldwide, according to the Associated Press. "Video walls" run XPe

Samsung has announced 40- and 46-inch displays with built-in computers running Windows XP Embedded (XPe). Microsoft acknowledges Linux threat to the Windows client

Microsoft has acknowledged for the first time, that linux is a direct threat to the Windows client, naming Red Hat and Canonical (Primary sponsor of Ubuntu) as competitors to it's Windows client business in it's annual report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. As stated in the filing by Microsoft, "Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market, competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat." The acknowledgment of this points out that linux has finally gained ground, and that it now puts up a viable fight against the Windows client.

Microsoft Patches Blocked for Some Admins

Microsoft on Monday said it is working on a patch to correct an issue that has rendered some administrators using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 unable to download and install last week's security updates. On Friday evening, Redmond confirmed what it called "a deployment issue affecting customers using System Center Configuration Manager 2007 servers with Systems Management Services 2003."

"Our initial investigation has shown the issue only affects Configuration Manager 2007 customers; no other detection or deployment technology is affected," wrote Christopher Budd, security response communications lead for Microsoft, in an e-mail on Friday to Redmondmag.com. "Additionally, only customers who are running Configuration Manager 2007 servers with SMS 2003 clients are affected."

Once dubbed Systems Management Server, SCCM helps corral components and settings for system administrators who maintain large groups of Windows-based machines. Among the program's chief attributes is that it enables administrators at a given enterprise to perform patch management, software distribution and operating system deployment in addition to keeping track of hardware and software inventory. In response to user complaints, on Friday Redmond issued Security Advisory (954474), which offers guidance to clients and channel partners running the program.

The decision to suspend the client is likely to be announced soon, I am told. The company is going to a browser-only strategy, in which much of its content is going to be available through a browser-based player. Joost, I am told, will release a small plugin that would embed itself in the browser and allow you to grab files using the P2P technologies. The web client is likely to have better quality than average video sites.
