Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform
Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.
As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.
Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

07.02.2007Tiny chips flash memory advance
Electronics giant Samsung has shown off what it claims is the worlds most powerful chip for use in memory cards. The 64 gigabit (Gb) chips could be
used to make 128 gigabyte memory cards, commonly used in MP3 players, capable of holding the equivalent of 80 DVDs. The chips are built using circuits
with a minimum feature size of just 30 billionths of a metre (nanometre). Rival firm Toshiba has said it is also working with similar technology. Both
firms will release products in 2009.
Flash memory is a so-called non-volatile computer memory, primarily used in memory cards, USB drives
and MP3 players. Non-volatile memory retains information even when there is no power to the device. Samsung said there was currently "exploding
demand" for flash memory as a storage medium in a range of applications. The new chips are designed to be used in a specific type of memory known
as NAND flash. NAND is one of two types of flash memory and offers higher storage and faster speeds than the cheaper NOR flash.

06.01.2009Samsung Ships 16Gb NAND Flash Memory
Zune 2.0 and iPod Nano 3G
anyone?
Samsung has
announced that it is the first
company to begin mass
production of 16Gb NAND flash
memory using the 51 nanometre
manufacturing process. The
memory is based on a
multi-level cell structure and
is 60% more efficient than its
60nm counterpart, which also
means it is up to as much as
80% faster. The new MLC design
offers read speeds of 30MB/sec
and write speeds of 8MB/sec as
opposed to 17MB/sec and
4.4MB/sec for the previous
generation. Samsung will
target digital memory cards,
MP3 players and cell phones
with its new high capacity
51nm 16Gb NAND chips. Samsung
will also offer a new suite of
flash software to allow cell
phones and MP3 players to take
advantage of 4KB pages instead
of the 2KB pages now used with
60nm NAND flash memory. The
memory chips will also support
4-bit error-correcting code.
Samsung is currently shipping
the 16Gb memory chips and
expects availability in the
mainstream market by year's
end.
" In
rolling out the densest NAND
flash in the world, we are
throwing open the gates to a
much wider playing field for
flash-driven consumer
electronics. To minimize
production costs and improve
performance, we have applied
the finest process technology
a ‘half generation' ahead of
the industry, which is
introducing 55nm and
higher ," said Jim
Elliott, Samsung
Semiconductor's director for
flash marketing.
