Cray Computer Founder Joins Microsoft
Microsoft confirmed on Friday that Burton Smith, formerly the chief scientist for Cray, would be joining the company as a technical fellow. Smith will work to expand Microsoft's efforts in parallel and high-performance computing, and would report to chief technical officier Craig Mundie.
Smith had worked with Cray since its inception as Tera Computer Co. in 1988. He has also published several works on issues regarding parallel computing. "As microprocessor technology continues to evolve over the next decade or so, we're going to see the capabilities of a supercomputer cluster on the desktop which will require a different software architecture," Mundie said. "Burton will be investigating how to develop software to benefit from the opportunities which multi-core multiprocessors will present."

2.12.2007Sakshat, the $20 laptop from India
Presumably said with a straight face, India unveiled its Sakshat $20 laptop yesterday. What's hard to come by is how the actual laptop will
be built as are no known pictures of the laptop published. The Sakshat laptop, which translates to "before your eyes", will boast 2GB of storage,
WiFi, Ethernet and use only 2 watts of power. That is all that is known for now about the cheap laptop but it has many wondering if it is anything
more than vaporware. The idea of a $20 laptop is going to be quite the task and is slated for a release this summer.

21.06.2007Want to be a computer scientist? Forget maths
A new book seeks to demolish
the concept that computer
science is rooted in
mathematics and, in particular
that the notion of the
algorithm is fundamental to
computer science.
In
particular, he says the notion
of the algorithm, "has been
largely ineffective as a
paradigm for computer
science." Fant argues that,
because mathematicians,
notably John Von Neumann and
Alan Turing, were intimately
involved with the early
development of digital
electronic computers in the
1940s they transplanted a
mathematical model of
computation, including the
algorithm - commonly
understood to be an exact
prescription, defining a
computational process, leading
from various initial data to
the desired result - into the
fledgling science of
computers.
He claims
that "What is essentially a
discipline of pure mathematics
has come to be called "the
theory of computer science,"
and "the notion of the
algorithm has been decreed to
be a fundamental paradigm of
computer science" However, he
says this mathematical
perspective "is the wrong
point of view" and is asking
the wrong questions...

27.08.2008Microsoft: We want your computer to talk in its sleep
Microsoft Research in partnership with USCD are working on a USB device, called the "Somniloquy" (which by definition means to "Talk in one's
sleep") which allows your computer to carry on performing network processes while it is asleep or in a low power state. The Somniloquy allows a
computer to process network traffic, even if the computers CPU, hard disk, display and I/O buses are powered down, without losing network
connectivity. As described in the research paper, the interface could manage many network-related tasks such as maintaining a remote desktop
connection, receiving instant messages, torrenting and managing a VOIP account, while the computer itself is asleep.

24.08.2009Britain's oldest computer rebooted, first time in decades
According to the BBC's technology website, Britain's oldest computer, the Harwell, is being reported to be undergoing a reboot for the first
time in decades. Plans are being made to transport it to the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley where it is to be restored to working order.
The computer was originally built and used at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, Oxfordshire. Construction started in 1949, and
became operational in April 1951 and remained in use until 1957. The computer used dekatrons for volatile memory (similar to RAM in a modern computer)
and paper tape for both input and program storage. Its purpose was to perform mathematical equations.

19.03.2007Coming soon: A supercomputer for the rest of us
What if your desktop computer could run 100 times faster than a PC and were simple enough for a high school student to program?
Thats not an idle question. Researchers at the University of Maryland have built a prototype of a desktop supercomputer that can do just
that.
The new computer is at least three years from reaching commercial markets, but it could have a big effect in industries
that process large loads of data. They include the pharmaceutical, aerospace, military and entertainment industries, for applications such as drug
modeling, computer-aided design and digital content creation.
The Explicit Multi-Threading (XMT) computer combines the
decades-old philosophy of using parallel computing algorithms with the huge number of transistors in modern processors...

22.07.2008Computer club explores 'nerd auction'
Looking to recruit more women, and perhaps date some sorority women, the largest computer club at Washington State University is exploring a "nerd
auction."
The idea is for members to trade their computer skills for a makeover and, possibly, a date.
"You can buy a nerd and he'll fix your computer, help you with stats homework, or if you're really adventurous, take you to dinner!" Ben Ford,
president of the Linux Users Group, said on its Web site recently.
Ford acknowledged that some of the group's 213 registered
members may not be ready for the auction block.
"The problem is that we're all still nerds. Let's face it, guys. If anyone's
going to bid on us, we'll need some spicing up," he wrote. "And who better to help with that than sorority girls who like nothing better than a
makeover?"..
