Happy Birthday mouse

The original mouse invention which is now in use on every office and home PC turns 40 next week. Looking like something that could take your fingers clean off, the wooden block with a single red button on top was unveiled to the world 40 years ago. Douglas Engelbart invented the mouse and worked with Bill English to build the device. In 1967, Engelbart applied for, and in 1970 he received a patent for the wooden shell with two metal wheels. In 1981, Xerox included a mouse with their Star computer system, and a few years later Apple offered one with their Macintosh system. Apple and CBS Sued Over 'Mighty Mouse' Name

Maryland-based Man & Machine, a computer peripheral maker, filed suit against Apple and CBS on Tuesday, claiming the companies are infringing on its trademark for the "Mighty Mouse" device. The company says it was selling its chemical-resistant and waterproof mouse to hospitals a year before Apple sold its single-button mouse of the same name.

CBS owns the rights to the Mighty Mouse cartoon and licensed the use of the name to Apple. The network was named in the lawsuit because Man & Machine says it doesn't have the right to license the name. Both Man & Machine and CBS have trademark applications for the name and are currently dueling for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's approval. Man & Machine is asking for monetary damages and for a court to issue an injunction to prevent Apple from selling any more of its Mighty Mouse devices.

Microsoft mouse to combine wireless, memory

Microsoft is preparing the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000, a laptop mouse which combines several important features. Above all is 1GB of internal memory, allowing owners to treat the 8000 as a USB flash drive. The mouse also offers not one but two wireless options: Bluetooth or 2.4GHz, the latter through the same USB port that allows file transfer. A switch flips between the two. The USB connector further offers magnetic charging through a direct connection.

The sensor is a high-resolution laser, and added controls on the mouse include a tiltwheel and two side buttons, assigned by default to "Magnifier" and "Back." Being a Microsoft mouse, the 8000 is immediately compatible with Windows Vista's Flip3D interface. It should be released in October for $159.
