Windows Server 2008: Terminal Services Architecture

Day Fourteen - we are past the halfway point. A good portion of the next two weeks will be devoted to Terminal Services and the new TS features. So strap in, and let's get started ...

We talked about the Windows Server 2008 Startup Processes in an earlier post. SMSS.EXE is still the first user-mode process created during the boot process as in previous versions of Windows. The change is that now SMSS.EXE launches a second instance of itself to configure Session 0, which is dedicated to system processes. The instance of SMSS.EXE dedicated to Session 0 launches the Windows Startup Application (WININIT.EXE) as well as an instance of CSRSS.EXE for Session 0, after which it exits. WININIT.EXE continues the startup process by starting SERVICES.EXE and LSASS.EXE as well as a new process, the Local Session Manager (LSM.EXE) which manages Terminal Server connections for the machine.

Debugging a Per-User Installation Error on Windows Vista

Chris Jackson: Yesterday, a friend asked for some assistance debugging an issue with Windows Installer. It was one of those situations where you've looked at the problem so closely, so many times, that you just needed another set of eyes. (They're close to shipping, so they've been doing nothing but look at bugs, probably for a while.)

Some background:

What they're doing is a rather interesting use of Windows Installer. They're using it to drop a setup.exe and then run it. So, they have a custom action of type 0xC02, which is a deferred custom action, promoted to not use impersonation, which runs as an exe. This custom action spawns another version of itself (with different arguments), and then the process exits so the installer can complete. The second version of this custom action then wants to uninstall the msi, as well as launch the setup.exe. So, the msi is just a way to package up the setup.exe.

And, with UAC, it was breaking.

Vista: What are wmpnscfg.exe and wmpnetwk.exe and Why Are They Running?

So you've been going through Task Manager trying to figure out why so many services are running when you notice there's two items for Windows Media Player in the list but you don't even use Media Player. What's up with that?

It's not like the processes take a lot of memory I just get irritated when there's a process that restarts for no good reason. You disable it, and then somehow it's back. Annoying!

Vista's MoveUser.exe replacement

Ned Pyle: In Windows Vista moveuser.exe is no longer supported. However, now we expose this functionality with a new WMI provider called Win32_UserProfile, which is discussed in KB930955. This is awesome because we expose things about user profiles in WMI now… and we can also move the profile to another user as well as delete user profiles. However, once I started looking at MSDN to understand what methods were available I quickly found that MSDN has not been updated as of yet for this new class. So we did some digging into the source code to find out how this works and what is supported.

MS update ate my CPU cycles

The latest batch of patches from Microsoft has left some users in the slow lane.

After applying the seven critical updates released by Redmond, some punters are finding their processor's resources eaten by an application called svchost.exe, in a way that mimics a viral infection. Svchost.exe is a generic name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

Outlook 2003 users have been http://www.roundtripsolutions. com/blog/2007/05/10/239/micros oft-breaks-outlook-again>harde st hit, with some linking the application's slow-down to the effects of a cumulative update to Internet Explorer. Vista SP1 Integration Guide

As we reported a few days ago, the latest build of Vista SP1 released to testers (6001.16633) is in the EXE standalone update format. Many of you will no doubt be wondering as to how exactly the bits can be integrated into a Vista RTM ISO if at all possible.

There's some good news and there's also some bad news.

First of all, it must be noted that we are still unsure if the SP1 update will remain in the EXE format and that anything noted below is subject to change. The primary reason being Microsoft's documentation for Vista Service Packs state that they will be provided in the MSU format whereas it is currently being offered to testers in the EXE format.

Unlike previous service pack updates for older Windows OSes, Microsoft do not provide any switches in the EXE to allow for simple integration. Part of the problem has to do with the completely different format that the Vista Setup DVD uses where each edition of Vista is a separate index in the install.wim and that each index needs to be separately updated. While Microsoft could implement a switch to allow the user to select which index to update or a switch to update all the indexes, it will turn out to be a very lengthy and time-consuming process as we are talking about gigabytes of files that need to be updated/replaced, saved and recompressed. Unfortunately, Vista also does not implement an Updates folder unlike Office 2007 where one could stick all the latest updates in the folder in the ISO and setup would pick them up and install them...

Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide

Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know, Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required before being able to proceed:

First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D: drive.

Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:

replacing D: with wherever you stored the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.

That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Outlook 2003 users have been hardest hit, with some linking the application's slow-down to the effects of a cumulative update to Internet Explorer. However, the effect is far from limited to Outlook 2003 users.

The issue has cropped up on the WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) blog and among reports to the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Centre (ISC). The precise cause of the problem remains unclear. Microsoft is yet to respond to our requests to shed some light on the problem.

Some users are experiencing relief by applying a hot fix issued to address problems involving non-response of svchost.exe (not exactly the symptom most are reporting) prior to upgrading their Windows Update client, ISC reports. Your mileage may vary.

Rafael's at it Again

As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar" and Desktop Slideshows.

He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:

- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows

Please note two things:

1. This application does NOT back up any of the files it patches, so to be safe, you will need to back up these files:

WindowsExplorer.exe
WindowsSystem32wisptis.exe
WindowsSystem32ieframe.dll
WindowsSystem32shell32.dll
WindowsSystem32stobject.dll
WindowsSystem32TabletPC.cpl
WindowsSystem32themecpl.dll
WindowsSystem32themeui.dll
WindowsSystem32powercfg.cpl

-----------

2. This application IS compatible with systems currently running the superbar who want to extend their desktop to allow the three other features.

Kaspersky false alarm quarantines Windows Explorer

A faulty signature update from Kaspersky Lab on Wednesday flagged up Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) as infected with a low-risk virus, Huhk-C. As a result the core Windows component was quarantined or worse.

Kaspersky released a revised update alongside advice on how to recover legitimate system and application files from quarantine (the default setting) within two hours. But that's not much consolation for users that had set their software to auto-delete infected files, who found themselves with hosed systems.

Among those affected was Reg reader Carl. "A false positive caused the deletion of explorer.exe.," he reports. "It would have only caused problems for companies performing their network scan during the hours that the dodgy update was present - which included me, unfortunately. I was working out of hours to fix the previous Kaspersky update problem. I finally finished sorting it all at 5am.".
