27.01.2009Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 via Windows Update (Public Availability Program)
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 is available to the public. Specific registry settings will allow you to be offered SP3 via Windows
Update.
Download the script and run it on a machine currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The script sets a registry key
on your system. The registry key is required for Windows Update to recognize your machine as a valid target for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2.
Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key.
Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta.
It is
recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release
software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package.

20.02.2008IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7
Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the
3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high
priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server
2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1.
Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

11.04.2009IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster
One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself
how much faster it
really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its
competitors. Google has put
a benchmark it used while creating their
Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its
predecessor. So I ran it.
I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.
* IE7 benched in at 24, 23
and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39
As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs
to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

it's rumored that Microsoft could be readying some new beta bits for connect testers in the coming weeks. The RC1 build will initially be offered
to Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.

22.01.2009Windows Vista RC2 This Friday
Thanks to Paul Thurrott for
the details:
Microsoft this Friday will
ship the final pre-release
version of Windows Vista and,
unexpectedly, will name the
release as Release Candidate 2
(RC2). Previously, Microsoft
had publicly asserted that it
would not ship an RC2
milestone release of Windows
Vista. But don't let the name
fool you: RC2 is really just a
standard interim build of
Vista and will not be given
out to millions of users as
was RC1.
The RC2
build is 5743, and Microsoft
is currently testing it
internally. As with the
previous interim build, 5728,
RC2 will be given out to beta
testers, MSDN and TechNet
subscribers, and a random,
limited selection of Consumer
Preview Program (CPP) members.

03.10.2006Support for IE8 pre-released versions extended
The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This
could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced
earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta
testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the
beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

31.12.2008IE8 RTM expected in March
TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.

18.02.2009Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update
Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be
pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple
received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under
Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

04.03.2008Microsoft Pulls Vista RC2 Public Download
On Monday, just two days after
making Release Candidate 2
(RC2) of Windows Vista
available to the public
through the Customer Preview
Program (CPP), Microsoft
pulled the download,
confounding many users who
were hoping to get the last
public prerelease version of
the product.
But
despite rumors of problems,
Microsoft says its removal of
RC2 was all part of the
plan.
"Windows
Vista RC2 was an interim
release distributed for the
purposes of final testing by a
limited audience," a
Microsoft representative told
me late yesterday. "Once that
limit was reached and the
necessary feedback was
collected from the CPP
audience, Microsoft closed the

version for distribution and
ongoing use."
