Yahoo relaunches new web portal

Internet search engine Yahoo has launched its new web portal, alongside a $100m advertising campaign, with the company hoping the changes will boost traffic and turn a profit, according to the BBC. The first change made by the company's new CEO, Carol Bartz, the new portal will also allow third-party services like Facebook to be integrated into the portal. Yahoo believes this openness will increase the companies profits, by allowing users to see their favourite websites and services from within the Yahoo portal. Going along with the customization aspect of the new portal, Yahoo's $100m advertising campaign uses the catch phrase "It's Y!ou".

JBoss adds Google Gadgets to portal software

JBoss is introducing an upgrade to its open-source portal software on Monday that features integration with Google Gadgets.

With Google Gadgets, developers can drop Google Gadget components onto a portal. These are mini-applications that work with the Google homepage, Google Desktop, or any page on the Web. Examples of Gadgets include a calendar, a weather globe, or a media player.

JBoss Portal 2.6 also adds improvements in personalization, identity management, and workflow, JBoss said. The software will serve as the foundation of the JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform.

Advanced personalization in version 2.6 enables users to personalize individual portlets, including themes, layouts, and content, to suit specific roles. "The personalization has become much easier to do," said Ram Venkataraman, JBoss's director of product management. ..

Red Hat updates its JBoss portal environment

Major Linux and open source software distributor Red Hat today released JBoss Enterprise Portal Environment 4.3, an update designed to make it easier for Java developers to deploy rich applications and portlets on corporate Web portals. In one new feature, the 4.3 release brings support for JBoss Portlet Bridge, an implementation of the JSR-301 specification aimed at letting developers get JavaServer Faces (JSF), Seam and RichFaces apps up and running quickly without concern over underlying portlet development or the API.

Portal Environment 4.3 is also the first release of the environment to support the Portlet 2.0 (JSR-286) standard for improved management of portal-to-portal communications, caching, and the Ajax frameworks often used for composite applications, or "business mashups," in service-oriented architectures (SOA). At the same time, Red Hat announced that its upcoming JBoss Developer Studio 2.0 will contain portlet plug-ins and wizards geared to simplifying portal development for both Portlet 2.0 and Portlet Bridge environments...

Yahoo Adds Human Touch To Search

Yahoo Inc. on Thursday released in beta an online service that lets registered users post and answer questions, a move that adds a human element to Web searching.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., portal said http://answers.yahoo.com/]Yaho o Answers complements its standard search engine by letting people ask straightforward questions and receive answers based on the collective knowledge of other Yahoo subscribers.

The service addresses the need for answers to everyday question that can't be easily handled through keyword searches, the company said. Questions and answers posted through the new service are archived and categorized by topic to make them searchable.

Users can set up RSS feeds either through their My Yahoo personal portal or some other newsreader, in order to receive the latest questions and answers on selected topics. Answers to individual questions are posted on the site, and can also be delivered through email. ..

Microsoft has opened a beta of Windows Live Mobile Homepage, the Windows Live portal designed for use on mobile handsets.



BetaNews tested the Live Mobile portal on a decidedly out-of-date Windows Mobile 5.0 device on the notably slow T-Mobile Web, yet it still gave a nimble performance.



From mhome.live.com, the user is prompted to sign into his Windows Live account, and given the option to access Windows Live Mail (Hotmail), Messenger, or MSN Mobile. Navigation is assigned to twelve numerical hotkeys (0-9, #, *), and although sites contain images, most text is digested into a single font style and size.

AOL Redesigns Video Portal

AOL on Monday issued an update to its AOL Video service that it says will make it easier for users to find, watch, and share web videos.

The company's video site is one of the fastest growing on the Internet. Its unique visitors have tripled over the past nine months, while the number of page views has grown by 12 times, AOL said.
