Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) Beta is now available!

Eduardo Melo: This is something that of you have been waiting for a while now! Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) is essentially the WS08 version of the "Admin Pack". RSAT allows you to install many of the WS08 management tools on a Vista SP1 computer so you can remotely manage WS08 servers (full servers and server core). Some of the tools included in RSAT can also be used to manage WS03 servers as well.

More details about RSAT are pasted below...

Installing and Using the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Vista

There are some things in life that will always be the same. Taxes will be due April 15 (in the US). The United States of America will always celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. Grant will always be buried in Grants Tomb. And, Microsoft will continue to make decisions and provide solutions that make us all shake our heads. If you run Windows Vista, you were shaking your head and in many cases, very upset about the situation of not having the proper tools to perform administration of your Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 network and Active Directory environment. Now, with the recent release of the Remote Server Administrative Tools (RSAT), the wait is over. This article describes some idiosyncrasies, installation steps, and tools that are available in the new RSAT for Windows Vista.

Securing the Local Administrators Group on Every Desktop

If your company is like most companies, you have users running as local administrators on their desktop. There are solutions to eliminate this need, which is a direction every company should make. When users run as local administrators, the IT staff has no control over that user or their desktop. In order for you to secure the local Administrators group on every desktop, you need to have some powerful tools to get the job done. There are typically three different tasks that you need to perform to secure this group, which we will cover in this article. Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1 (with the RSAT installed) provide amazing new controls that make these configurations a breeze!

Admin Pack replacement to be available for Vista after SP1 RTM

Two days ago Kevin Remde from Microsoft posted about there not being an Admin Pack that will run on Windows Vista for administering Windows Server 2008 servers. He did this after learning this from another blog, and during e-mail discussion threads. The recommendation was to use RDP (Terminal Services) instead. Fortunately, there is a group that is indeed building a replacement:

The final word was finally passed down from the group who are building a new tool to replace the Admin Pack for running on Vista, and I have received their permission to repeat it here. Here is the verbatim quote:

The new feature with codename Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT Client) for managing WS08 from Vista SP1 Business, Enterprise and Ultimate will be released as an OOB component shortly after Vista SP1 RTM. In the meantime, you can leverage the Admin Pack for managing WS03 servers remotely (Instructions Here: http://support.microsoft. com/kb/930056). The old Admin Pack will not work against WS08, though.

So.. that's good news! You can use the Admin Pack to manage WS03 servers, or you can use the new Remote Server Administration Tools (which I understand will be much like the ones added to "Longhorn" Beta 3) when they become available, on Vista SP1.

Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for XP, Server 2003, Vista

Multiple Group Policy Preferences have been added to the Windows Server 2008 Group Policy Management Console (which are also available through the Remote Server Administration Toolset (RSAT) for Windows Vista SP1). Group Policy Preferences enable information technology professionals to configure, deploy, and manage operating system and application settings they previously were not able to manage using Group Policy. After you install this update, your computer will be able to process the new Group Policy Preference extensions. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
