So what's the business case for Windows Vista?

The next few weeks could be crucial in the evolution of Windows Vista, Microsoft's next client operating system. Microsoft engineers will crunch through feedback from 500,000 beta testers who evaluated the latest Windows Vista Community Technology Preview (CTP).

Inside CNET Labs: Windows Vista SP1 performance

The long-awaited Service Pack 1 update for Windows Vista brings with it a number of significant bug fixes and other improvements. Microsoft promises that with it you will also see a number of noticeable performance improvements as well. In our initial round of testing, we saw a mixed bag of results: we saw a few notable performance improvements under some conditions as well as significant performance degradations in others. For the most part, however, we saw little difference in performance between Vista and the Vista SP1 update.

As we dug a little deeper into Microsoft's claims, we discovered that many of the performance improvements being touted aren't actually directly attributable to SP1. Many of the claimed performance improvements, such as improved boot-time, are actually more a function of improved third-party drivers and applications that are benefiting from a year's worth of programming for Vista and from the programmers getting continued feedback and guidance from Microsoft. So as long as you have been diligent about keeping your Vista system current with the latest Windows updates and third-party drivers, you likely already have many of the potentially performance improving enhancements.

Vista is greener and more secure, says Microsoft

Eighteen months after its launch, Windows Vista is growing in popularity because of its low power requirements and good security, a senior UK manager for Microsoft has claimed.

Speaking at a round-table in London on Wednesday, John Curran, director of the Windows group for Microsoft in the UK, said: "First and foremost, businesses like Vista for security". The operating system (OS) "has, since its launch, been the safest operating system on the market with the fewest vulnerabilities of any OS available," he added.

Curran said that, after security, the most important feature for corporate users was Vista's contribution to the "green agenda". The savings possible here "really help drive down the carbon footprint and help drive down the costs in an IT environment", he claimed.

Windows Vista ReadyBoost Test Round-up

ActiveWin has posted up a review of 3 Windows Vista capable ReadyBoost USB sticks.

We have been running a number of Windows ReadyBoost tests on various USB Drive Sticks that have come out recently. Not only do we have a list of those that work, and those that don't! We have also started to go in-depth with some of them. ReadyBoost is designed to improve small random I/O for people who lack the expansion slots, money, and or technical expertise to add additional RAM. This isn't a replacement for RAM upgrades; it's simply the chance to speed up your Vista machine very slightly and very easily.
