Apple Recommends Antivirus Software

Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as well as other security issues.

Security vendor Sophos has warned companies not to rely on antivirus software to protect their IT infrastructure and systems.

S peaking at the Information Systems Security Association conference in London on Thursday, Vanjer Svajcer, senior virus researcher for Sophos, said companies should also look to alternative technologies and procedures to ensure their IT assets are secure.

Svajcer said: "I always say, 'Do not rely on antivirus software'. In 99 per cent of cases you cannot. The problem is we have to see a virus before we can detect it. If antivirus is in place, it may not detect [a virus] because it may be very targeted for you."..

America to crack down on blogger payola

US regulators are to crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose money or gifts received from companies when reviewing their products. In the new policy from the Federal Trade Commission, offending bloggers could eventually face fines of up to $11,000 (£6,900) per violation, according to the BBC. So-called payola schemes have increased in recent years, with marketers realising the potential of encouraging bloggers and forum contributors to produce reviews or testimonials on their products in exchange for money of freebies. Although the guidelines released by the FTC are not binding by law, they are interpretations of the law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations, such as those on disclosing endorsements.

Neowin Review: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009

Back when I got my first PC, there wasn't a need for Antivirus software, malware wasn't heard of, and Spam came in a can, and could arguably be called a tasty treat. Now, you just about can't run a PC without some sort of Antivirus/spyware protection, especially if you're connected to the internet (something we'd only be able to use if we were students at the local college). Back in late 1990, Symantec released their first Antivirus software, called Norton Antivirus (from the original company name, and founder, Peter Norton). At the time, it was considered one of, if not THE best AV software out there.
