The First Year of IE7

It’s been a little over a year since we released IE7 on Windows XP and for Windows Vista, so I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about where we are after the year.

According to internal Microsoft research based on data from Visual Sciences Corporation, there are over 300 million users are experiencing the web with IE7. This makes IE7 the second most popular browser after IE6. IE7 is already #1 in the US and UK, and we expect IE7 to surpass IE6 worldwide shortly.

Perhaps more important than the overall numbers is the positive impact IE7 has made for our users. As you know, we focused a lot on improving security in IE7. We believe IE 7 is the safest Microsoft browser released to date. According to a vulnerability report published today, IE7 has fewer vulnerabilities than previous versions of IE over the same time period. What’s more, the report showed that IE7 had both fewer fixed and unfixed vulnerabilities in the first year than the other browsers we compared.

2400+ major sites that IE 8 can't render correctly

As Microsoft moves forward with IE 8 it is hoping to introduce new features that will help stop the bleeding of consumers switching to other browsers. While many hope that IE 8 will also help to ease webmasters pain of making every site work on every browser, that dream may not come true. Mary-Jo Foley of ZDnet is reporting that IE 8's incompatibility list is at "2400 major sites and counting". These are sites that do not render correctly natively in IE 8 and require an IE 7 layer to be running to display to web page correctly.

IE7 now on 100 million systems

Tony Chor, the Group Program Manager for the Internet Explorer team claims 100 millionth download of IE7

I'm pleased to report that on January 8th, we had the 100 millionth IE7 installation. However, even more important than installations is usage. According to WebSideStory (the company we use to measure browser usage), as of this week, over 25% of all visitors to websites in the US were using IE7, making IE7 the second most used browser after IE6. We expect these numbers to continue to rise as we complete our final localized versions, scale up AU distribution, and with the consumer availability of Windows Vista on January 30, 2007.

If you haven't installed IE7 for Windows XP yet, you can download it here. You won't need to download it for Windows Vista as it has IE7 built in with all the same features as the XP version, plus Protected Mode.

VeriSign Issues IE7 Extended Validation SSL Certificate

New Groundbreaking EV UpgraderTechnology Will Enable All IE7 Browsers on Microsoft Windows XP Client Systems to Also Display the Green Address Bar

VeriSign), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure for the networked world, today announced the general availability of its Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates, which help protect users against online fraudulent activity by providing third party verification of a Web site's authenticity. These new certificates support Microsoft's IE7 and Vista operating system and also incorporate VeriSign's unique EV Upgrader technology enabling all Windows XP clients using IE7 to display the same green address bar and other interface enhancements as Windows Vista clients. VeriSign issued the first of these certificates to Overstock.com, one of the largest online retailers in North America.

"As one of the first Web sites to implement the new VeriSign Extended Validation SSL Certificates, Overstock.com continues to demonstrate leadership in making online shopping safer," said Jacob Hawkins, senior vice president of marketing at Overstock.com. "When customers see the green browser bar and trusted VeriSign Secured Seal on our site, they can be confident that their online transactions are secure."

Microsoft prepares IE7 Beta 3 for mid-August

The Hotfix is reporting a Microsoft source has quietly leaked that IE7 Beta 3 will be availible to the public sometime in mid-August of this year. This goes hand-in-hand with official MS reports that they are indeed working on Beta 3 at the moment.

One fix going in Beta 3 will be will be to revert back to an IE6 behavior when using PHP pages. One IE7 tester noted that "when it comes to compare the code in the session variable and the code in the post data, they're different." Eric Lawrence of Microsoft responded with "for compatibility reasons, we're going to revert to IE6 behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to prevent this exact issue" on the subject.

In the past few weeks Microsoft has made a few references to IE7 Beta 3 on their IE Blogs about bug fixes and releases. IE7 Final is set for a Winter 2006 release.

Neowin Asks: Who can't upgrade to IE7?

As most Neowin visitors know by now, Windows Internet Explorer 7 was released this week. While there are probably a few of you who will not upgrade immediately because you use another browser (Firefox, Opera, etc) the question of the day is... are those, the people like you out there who cannot upgrade to IE7?

I can't, at least not at work. The private university I work for has multiple programs that simply will not function on systems with IE7 installed on them. As reflected in a letter sent our by my boss to our campus, "these vendors continue to work toward support, but it will likely be January or February of 2007 before that support becomes official."

While I in no way blame Microsoft for this -- these vendors, Cisco being among them, have had ample time to test the IE7 beta and RCs -- the fact of the matter is our organization cannot allow systems to be upgraded on our campus, even student machines (which require a school issued Cisco program to access our network, that program breaks with IE7.)

Are there programs that you or your company use that have forced you to stay at IE6? Please comment and share.

IE8 will render in true standards mode, by default

Thanks to Neowin Chat Moderator Mephistopheles for the heads up in BPN.

In what is probably one of the most fantastic bit of news to come out of Redmond in a long time, Microsoft has announced today that IE8 will, by default, interpret web content in the most standards compliant way it can.

Posted on the IEBlog, Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager for the Internet Explorer team explained that IE8 will still also render pages in an IE7 compatibility mode but that this mode will not be the default as they had previously announced. The decision to enable this mode will be left up to the developer of the website being visited, using an http header/meta tag.

“IE8 has been significantly enhanced, and was designed with great support for current Internet standards. This is evidenced by the fact that even in its first beta, IE8 correctly renders the popular test known as ‘Acid2,’ which was created by the Web community to promote real-world interoperability,” said Ray Ozzie, Microsoft chief software architect. “Our initial plan had been to use IE7-compatible behavior as the default setting for IE8, to minimize potential impact on the world’s existing Web sites. We have now decided to make our most current standards-based mode the default in IE8.

While this change may require some work for developers of sites currently designed around Microsoft's previous rendering mode, the changes required should be minor and going forward will make the development of true standards based websites, that everyone can enjoy, much easier.
