Windows Live Messenger celebrates 10 years, hits 330m users

On July 22, 1999 Microsoft launched what would become the world's most popular instant messenging service, currently with over 330 active users every month. Previously named MSN Messenger, it was released to work on the Windows operating system platform for users to instantly chat over the Internet using Microsoft's .NET Messenger Service. Microsoft later re-branded MSN Messenger into Windows Live Messenger to merge it with its other Live services back in December 13, 2005. Windows Live Messenger (WLM) has gone through significant protocol changes and face lifts over its many versions in the last 10 years, ending up at Windows Live Messenger 2009 (designated to be called 9.0).

Windows Live Messenger Screens Removed

Some members have expressed a deep concern about Neowin showcasing screenshots of Windows Live Messenger 9, they say it breaches the non disclosure agreement (NDA) they signed with Microsoft.

While this new version is most definitely not a state secret, and widely known on most if not all tech related websites (even as far as listing the new features), we have decided to pull the screenshots due to claims that the beta could be comprimised should it not remain low-key. I know that new software from Microsoft such as Live Messenger generates a lot of interest for those not lucky enough to be on the beta, but we reckon it's a good idea to wait until Microsoft formally announces the beta of Windows Live Messenger and makes it available to a wider audience.

So for now, good luck Live Messenger team and those who are testing it!

Update: I'd like to point out to avoid confusion that we were not contacted by Microsoft, I consulted an MS contact on this matter myself.

Microsoft tests WLMessenger updates via Windows Update

Using Windows Update, Microsoft has quietly rolled out an update for beta testers using the next version of Windows Live Messenger. The obvious advantage is having the option of being able to update yet another Microsoft product in the same familiar place. The Windows Update client in Vista downloads the update, creates a restore point, install the update - and it can do this all without any user-interaction, if you should choose to. The description of WLM 8.5 Beta 1 Update 1 is as follows: “ This update is being used to test how Microsoft Updates are distributed for Windows Live Messenger. While there are no actual changes to Messenger at this time, it's important for Messenger Beta testers to receive this update. Thanks for helping test Messenger! ”

There may not be any “actual changes” but nevertheless the build number has changed from 8.5.1235.0517 to 8.5.1238.0601. The update seemed to go fine for me, what about you?

Thanks Avi for posting this in Back Page News.

From the Inside Windows Live Messenger Team Blog: Back in November we shipped the final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 along with several other Windows Live applications and services. Microsoft integrates Windows Live into Vista

Microsoft-Watch reports that newer Windows Vista builds, 5506 and up, include references to Windows Live software by default in various locations throughout the OS. It is unknown yet if the concerned products are installed with Vista or if it only contains download links to it.

The Welcome Center in Vista is the place where most references are found. In build 5506, it contains icons for Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live OneCare, Windows Live Toolbar and Windows Live Desktop Mail. Additionnally, the Start Menu apparently contains a Windows Live Messenger icon.

Though this is only speculation, this may mean that Microsoft is finally removing Windows Messenger from its Windows products, using instead Windows Live Messenger.
