Microsoft’s Internet Explorer development team has warned users updating to Windows XP Service Pack 3 that they won't be able to downgrade from IE7
to the older IE6 without uninstalling the service pack.
"If you choose to install XP SP3, Internet Explorer 7 will remain on your system
after the install is complete," said Jane Maliouta, an IE program manager, in the blog entry. "Your preferences will be retained. However, you will
no longer be able to uninstall IE7. If you go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, the Remove option will be grayed out."

Microsoft has, at last, released their second service pack for their latest Office suite, Office 2007. This update comes almost a year after the
first service pack, but includes many important features and updates that make it worth the wait.
In general, Microsoft describes Office
2007 SP2 as:
- All of the Public Updates, Security Updates, Cumulative Updates, and Hotfixes released through February 2009.
- Previously
unreleased fixes that were made specifically for this service pack. (In addition to general product fixes, this includes improvements in stability,
performance, and security.)
However, unlike the folks at Apple, Microsoft provides a more detailed list of changes that were made in SP2.

Microsoft Corp. warned users yesterday that it will drop support for Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) in three weeks, and urged them to upgrade to a
newer service pack that was involved in a dustup earlier this year over blocked file formats.
The company's policy is to support
an Office service pack for 12 months after it releases a successor; Microsoft rolled out Office 2003 SP3 in September 2007. It always extends that
12-month period to the following month's second Tuesday, the usual patch day for its security updates.

Microsoft is releasing two patches on Tuesday, November 11, to fix some critical security holes in both its operating system, and Microsoft Office.
One has been given a rating of Critical , where XML can be used for Remote Code Execution in both Windows and Microsoft Office, while
the other has been labeled as Important , only affecting the Windows operating system itself. Attacks seem to be located in the Windows
Extensible Markup Language (XML) Core versions 3.0, 4.0, and 6.0. XML programs are used for creating web languages, and encode data over the
internet.
Vulnerabilities have been identified in the following software:
- Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
- Windows XP
Service Pack 2 and 3
- Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and 2
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows Vista and Windows Vista Service Pack
1
- Microsoft Office 2003 with Service Pack 3
- Microsoft Office 2007
Both patches require a restart.

Microsoft Takes Heat for Office 2003 SP3 File Format Blocking
Microsoft is facing criticism from a competitor as some customers for its decision to block some older file formats with Office 2003 Service Pack 3,
which it released last September.
The only non-Microsoft file format that was blocked by Service Pack 3 was CorelDraw .CDR
files.
"CorelDraw users can rest assured that they can still use the CorelDraw Graphics Suite normally on a system where
Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 has been installed," Gerard Metrallier, Corel's director of graphics product management, said in a statement
released January 3
"This update from Microsoft does not impact CorelDraw at all or the capability of opening .CDR files from
within CorelDraw or from Windows Explorer," he said.
