15.11.2005Microsoft jacks into the Softgrid
Look ma, no virtualisation

today, Microsoft showed its
new "Softgrid" technology
that allows apps to run as if
they were inside a second copy
of Windows. But unlike
traditional virtualisation

Microsoft showed Office

Windows.
Initially, the technology
is for corporate users only,
but it has huge obvious
benefits for home users as
well. For example, the ability
to install an application,
without affecting the system
in any permanent way, and be
able to remove it completely
without relying on the app's
uninstaller.

11.08.2006Microsoft Inadvertently Ships Deleted Files
Microsofts use of virtual machines to distribute evaluation versions of software saves the end user much of the pain of having to configure test
systems. However, it also introduces a new quality control issue by exposing the full dimension of data that was on the system when the virtual
machines disk image was created, and last month, that issue caught Microsoft off guard.
The company began making disk images, or
Virtual Hard Drives (VHDs), with evaluation versions available on a limited basis in 2005 and more generally accessible through Microsoft TechNet in
November 2006, and had provided a way for partners to build their own prepackaged software stacks, using the Virtual PC technology it acquired from
the now-defunct Connectix in 2003.
SD Times in December learned that at least one of the machine images available for download at
TechNet did not have its free space wiped, and files thought deleted proved recoverable from an evaluation copy of the Internet Explorer Application
Compatibility VPC Image.

22.01.2008Asustek to push desktop version Eee PC next year
Asustek Computer is developing a desktop version Eee PC which it hopes to launch in 2008, according to Jonathan Tseng, president of marketing at
Asustek. Tseng noted that the PC will not include a display, but further specifications and pricing are still under evaluation.
Some component makers pointed out that no matter which version of the Eee PC Asustek launches, they will benefit. However, they noted that since
Asustek is currently not seeing outstanding performance in the desktop PC market, the Eee PC's transition to a desktop version should prove difficult
for the company, although the benefits of the plan still outweigh the drawbacks.
On the other hand, some PC vendors remarked that
with the growing trend of notebooks replacing desktops, desktop PCs will eventually head toward multi-core CPUs and the mid-range and high-end
markets. If Asustek launches a low-price desktop it will not have any positive selling points, other than the Eee PC brand.

01.12.2008XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1
Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?
Well, the same is coming
to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)
From the WGA Blog:
With this update to
WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows
Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their
next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).
The desktop
background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue
to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.
Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop
notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is
non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.
As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails
validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt
message and the messages that appear from the system tray. jcxp.net -
