02.02.2007Safely Remove Hardware fix for Windows Vista
When you click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area on a Windows Vista based computer, and then you click Safely remove
Device_name, the device may not be removed as expected. Additionally, you do not receive a message that verifies whether the device was safely
removed.
Note This problem occurs only when you left-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area and then click Safely
remove Device_name.
This problem occurs because of a timing issue in which allocated memory may be released while the system is removing
the selected device. When this behavior occurs, the system can no longer find the information about the selected device. Therefore, the device is not
removed.

08.03.2009Mini How-To: Remove the Windows BSOD icon in Leopard
Make OS X a little less smug
Its pretty clear that Apple left no stone unturned in Leopard, making changes and fixes throughout the new operating
system. Unfortunately, that also included an upgrade to its crucial smugness subsystem: the image you see above of an old school CRT monitor with a
blue screen of death is actually the not-so-subtle gag icon Leopard uses to represent Windows machines on your local network. (Is it any wonder why PC
and Mac fanboys tend to get in so many fights?) Granted, many Leopard beta users have seen this icon since the early releases, but we didnt actually
think the shipping version would include something so pompous and galling to the other 90%.

31.10.2007Sony charges $50 to remove laptop bloatware; Retracts Later
Sony is
offering to remove
some of the trial software it crams onto the hard disks of new laptops, for a fee. Buyers of the configure-to-order versions of its Vaio TZ2000 and
Vaio TZ2500 laptops can opt to have Sony remove the some of its own applications, in addition to trial software and games.
The "Fresh
Start" option, billed as a software optimization, costs $49.99, and is only available to customers choosing to pay an additional $100 to
upgrade the operating system to Windows Vista Business from the Windows Vista Home Premium edition offered as standard.
Blogs erupted
with outrage at the planned charge, with Engadget opening a headline with "
Sony Hates You."
Responding to a tidal wave of outrage, Sony has reversed a plan to charge $50 to remove all the pre-installed applications — often
derided as "bloatware" or "craplets" — from its high-end TZ-series notebooks. "
There will be no charge for Fresh Start" said the company
spokesman.

15.11.2005OneCare and Defender to
integrate further?
The Windows Live OneCare team
used its blog yesterday to
announce they are currently
working on one of their most
requested feedback:
integration with Windows
Defender, Microsoft's
antispyware utility, still in
beta 2 version.
The first thing they did in
that way is to modify the
OneCare setup so that it also
installs Windows Defender in
the background.
"
For those interested
in the technical details, now,
when you install OneCare, as
long as you accept the default
prompts, the Windows Defender
install itself goes on behind
the scenes, and the Windows
Genuine Advantage check goes
on behind the scenes. During
the Windows Live OneCare
install process, the default
setting is to automatically
install Windows Defender with
automatic updates turned on.
However you will be given the
option to turn off automatic
updates of Defender signatures
or forego the Windows Defender
installation altogether if you
wish. "
The team also said
it will be easy to remove
Defender if wished, though the
didn't say if it'll be
through the usual Add/Remove
Programs or another way (a
button through the OneCare
front-end, for example).

02.05.2007Microsoft releases activation exploit detection update
Microsoft has released an update for Windows Vista designed to detect activation exploits that bypass product activation and that interfere with usual
Windows operation. This update is tagged as KB940510.
According to Microsoft "when the update is installed, no functionality of your
operating system will be affected. If no exploits are detected, the update silently exits. If exploits are detected, you will be provided a link to a
Web site that describes how you can remove the exploits. When the exploits are removed, you may be asked to use a valid product key to activate your

27.02.2008How To Remove Bloatware From Your Notebook
If you were given the gift of a new laptop this Christmas, you know theres really no better way to start the New Year. Whether it was upgrading an
older notebook, or even your first computer chances are youre expecting a huge bump in performance. If major notebook manufactures are known for
anything these days, its filling up your shiny new machine with tons of additional software. This bloatware increases startup and shutdown times,
increases background disk activity which promotes system lag, and greatly reduces battery life if the system can never reach an idle state. In this
guide well go over steps you can take to remove most of the unneeded applications that came preinstalled on your new notebook and hopefully speed it
up without going as far as doing a clean install of Windows.
