Google Maps Gets Drag & Drop Routes

Don't like the driving route Google Maps doled out to you? Now you can change the driving directions by grabbing the blue route line and dragging it to create a new destination point, which will in turn create a new route.

As you drag your new destination point, the route changes on the fly to give you an idea of how your new point will change your route. It's always been a little annoyingespecially when you want to send a map to another personwhen you know the default directions don't highlight the best route, so this excellent and easy-to-use feature will certainly come in useful. Safely Remove Hardware fix for Windows Vista

When you click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area on a Windows Vista based computer, and then you click Safely remove Device_name, the device may not be removed as expected. Additionally, you do not receive a message that verifies whether the device was safely removed.

Note This problem occurs only when you left-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area and then click Safely remove Device_name.

This problem occurs because of a timing issue in which allocated memory may be released while the system is removing the selected device. When this behavior occurs, the system can no longer find the information about the selected device. Therefore, the device is not removed.

How to fix three "broken" features of Vista

Jonathan Schlaffer: Certain problems with Vista wont be fixed by service packs or by updates but rather were actually part of the design. Users got used to XP and the way XP did things but Vista does some things differently. To help get your sanity back here are three things you can do to make Vista more amiable.

First, lets tackle UAC. Vistas UAC enables account controls which requires you to specify program actions when they need elevated permissions. The problem is that almost every action in Vista will require such. This can be turned off while still leaving the more important virtualization protection in place.

There are two ways to do this, by using native commands in Vista which is a 6-step process and should be avoided by everyone unless you want to create Local Security Policy specifically for that. I cant recommend doing so. Instead, download Tweak UAC which will allow you to painlessly enable quiet mode.

Sony charges $50 to remove laptop bloatware; Retracts Later

Sony is offering to remove some of the trial software it crams onto the hard disks of new laptops, for a fee. Buyers of the configure-to-order versions of its Vaio TZ2000 and Vaio TZ2500 laptops can opt to have Sony remove the some of its own applications, in addition to trial software and games.

The "Fresh Start" option, billed as a software optimization, costs $49.99, and is only available to customers choosing to pay an additional $100 to upgrade the operating system to Windows Vista Business from the Windows Vista Home Premium edition offered as standard.

Blogs erupted with outrage at the planned charge, with Engadget opening a headline with "Sony Hates You."

Responding to a tidal wave of outrage, Sony has reversed a plan to charge $50 to remove all the pre-installed applications — often derided as "bloatware" or "craplets" — from its high-end TZ-series notebooks. "There will be no charge for Fresh Start" said the company spokesman.

TweakVI v1.0 build 1014 for Windows Vista released

Optimize and tweak Windows Vista with TweakVI v1.0 ('Basic' edition is freeware)

Totalidea Software has released TweakVI, an application that adds up to 26 time-saving productivity improvements to Windows Vista. In addition to tuning Windows Vista to run faster, TweakVI's easy-to-use functions let you tailor the Windows interface to meet your personal needs. A registry cleaner cleans up your systems registry, and the option to create a 256MB RAM drive grants the fastest access to files and folders.

TweakVI v1.0 gives you instant access to hidden Windows XP settings, including ones that are hard to change. You can make the Windows Vista fade in and out, tweak lots of desktop settings, customize the Start menu, and enable several hidden performance options. With the Ultimate version of TweakVI an auto-system-optimizing feature has been included to optimize Microsoft's new Operating system with a click of the mouse only.

For the new Windows Vista 'User Account Control' (UAC) TweakVI v1.0 includes several tweaks options to configre this Vista security feature. TweakVI v1.0 also manages Windows Vista system updates: it detects available updates, installs them and removes backups of installed updates for more hard drive space.

TweakVI v1.0 lets you lock applications so others cannot run them. Whether you want to keep your children from accidentally destroying your business files, or you have colleagues or employees who shouldn't be using certain programs on your computer, Tweak-VI v1.0 locks people out of a master list of applications that you can easily maintain. In addition to locking applications, TweakVI v1.0 also lets you hide and lock folders so they cannot be accessed by other people or programs.

TweakVI v1.0 gives you control over what programs are launched when you start your computer. In addition to letting you easily manage the programs in your Start menu, the program also gives you access to programs that are launched because of obscure entries in the Windows Vista Registry. TweakVI v1.0 lets you remove those annoying programs that you've never wanted running in the background. With a single mouse click, you can optimize the physical memory in your computer. Each program that you run uses computer memory. When you close a program, often it leaves code fragments in memory and, over time, your Windows session runs slower and slower. TweakVI v1.0 lets you clean out these leftovers so your system will run more quickly and efficiently. For more system performance, TweakVI v1.0 allows to set up multiple pagefiles and virtual drives.

TweakVI v1.0 optimizes your Internet connection speed. Its built-in table of the most popular Internet Service Providers' configurations contains information that lets you increase throughput, whether you're using a dial-up connection or a faster broadband connection. Additionally TweakVI includes a huge list of tweaks and restrictions for Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, as well as an auto optimization feature for Firefox v1 and v2.

TweakVI v1.0 currently comes with an English interface; more languages will be supported soon. The program lets you tweak the new Windows Vista Sidebar, restrict access to the taskbar, sidebar and several other Windows Vista feactures, rename multiple files with a single mouse click, generate truly random passwords as well as pronounceable passwords, destroy sensitive files without leaving a trace, find and remove unnecessary files from your hard drive, and perform many other tweaks and optimizations.

TweakVI v1.0 includes a Windows Vista auto-logon feature, Outlook 2002, 2003 and 2007 security tweaks, and a number of Windows Vista performance and user interface tweaks. Additionally it comes with a DiscDrive Doctor, and lots of other useful features for the user's daily work with Windows Vista.

TweakVI v1.0 is available in three different editions: the free 'Basic Edition' , which contains all the basic tweaking features for standard system tweaking, the 'Premium Edition', which gives you access to much more tweaking and system optimization features, and the 'Ultimate Edition', for complete control on Windows Vista, with all plugins currently available for TweakVI. The TweakVI 'Basic' Edition is available without charge, the 'Premium' Edition costs US$ 29.95, and the 'Ultimate' Edition costs US$ 39.95.

AT&T Silently adds Option to Remove iPhone Data Plan

AT&T is now allowing iPhone users to remove their iPhone data plan, allowing them to save at least $20.00 monthly if they feel that they don’t use the EDGE network enough, don’t need it all or simply find it too slow. Previously, this was something the wireless carrier would not allow the user to change. If you are one who wants to save some cash on a feature that you don’t need, head over to your AT&T myAccount page and click “Add/Manage Features”. The downside is the removal of the data plan will remove text messaging – add a text messaging plan if you don’t want to pay by the message.

Googlite explains PageRank tweak

Google has confirmed that the recent update to its "visible PageRank" system is an effort to crackdown on sites trying to rig this closely-watched web popularity contest. Over the weekend, Google search engine guru Matt Cutts told Search Engine Journal that the company is intent on punishing web publishers that attempt to sell their PageRank currency to other sites.

A site with a high PageRank can often boost the rank of a less-popular site simply by linking to it. As a result, popular sites will often provide such links in exchange for cash. And Google doesnt like that.
