bugs it introduced in last Wednesday's security update.
Firefox 2.0.0.8 patched ten vulnerabilities, including three critical
flaws, but also shipped with five regression bugs -- problems unintentionally introduced when code was changed to plug other holes.

Microsoft Halts XP SP3 Update to HP PCs Running AMD CPU's
The recent Windows XP Service Pack 3 update has left certain AMD-based PCs manufactured by Hewlett-Packard caught in an endless reboot cycle caused by
an Intel-specific disk image mistakenly being used with AMD hardware. According to the Microsoft Update Product Team Blog, "The problem is a registry
value, present on images created with Intel processors, that causes a driver (intelppm.sys) to load at boot."
In order to fix the problem,
Microsoft has temporarily blocked these AMD machines from getting the service pack while it cobbles together an alternative update. While some users
wait for Microsoft's fix to eventually be released, others have turned to a former Microsoft employee, Jesper Johansson, who coded up a free tool to detect and fix the problem and made
it available last Wednesday. Once Johansson's fix has been implemented, users can update their systems to SP3 without any problems.

Symantec Corp. Thursday said it was
Microsoft's code that crippled some PCs after upgrades to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) emptied Device Manager, deleted network connections, and
packed the registry with thousands of bogus entries.
"We finally got to the bottom of this last night," said Dave Cole,
Symantec's senior director for product management of its consumer software. "All of these problems are related to the same thing: a Microsoft file
that created all the garbage entries ."
He also said that some of the same symptoms had been acknowledged by
Microsoft when users updated to Windows XP SP2 several years ago; Cole referenced a pair of Microsoft support documents to back up his claim.

X and Linux. The Windows-specific bugs included one that disables Firefox extensions after updating. The problem doesnt affect every copy of 2.0.0.8
on Windows -- one user said it had hit just one of his four PCs -- and can be remedied by deleting a trio of files from the hard drive. Programmers
are still working on a fix.

Microsoft's XP SP3 Patch Fixes Anti-Virus Glitch
Microsoft issued a hotfix for Windows XP Service Pack 3 last week that it says "could resolve" a Windows registry corruption problem associated with
third-party security software. The problem was first discovered just over a month ago, and it notably affected users of Symantec's Norton Antivirus suite of products.
Some users who
installed XP SP3 reported seeing garbled system entries that cluttered the Windows registry. The corruption in the registry led to problems such as
lost Internet and wireless connections, along with uninitiated restarts caused by sporadic registry subkeys.
Microsoft provided an
explanation for the problem in a Knowledgebase posting on Friday. The
issue "occurs when the Fixccs.exe process is called during the Windows XP SP3 installation," the KB article explains. "This process creates some
intermediate registry subkeys, and it later deletes these subkeys. In some cases, some antivirus applications may not let the Fixccs.exe process
delete these intermediate registry subkeys." When the problem occurs, "certain applications" within Windows, such as "Device Manager and Network
Connections" may be unable to function, Redmond added.

made to improve the browser
for Microsofts newest
operating system. We caught up
with Mike Schroepfer, VP of
Engineering at the Mozilla
Foundation, to bring us up to
date.
When Vista first came out,
users reported a number of
problems running Firefox on
it. Have these issues been
worked out now? For example,
Users were unable to set
Firefox as the default browser
for all applications.
Vista
changed the way in which
default applications are
registered. There are many
applications currently
shipping which do not use the
OS provided APIs to launch the
default application and
instead try and read the
registry directly to determine
the default application. These
applications will not
correctly launch Firefox until
they are updated to use the
existing APIs. We are
currently investigating some
workarounds for this - you can
track the progress here: bug

Vista SP1 serves up its own sets of problems
Every technology site is full of information regarding Vista SP1, even our own. But, not everyone is happy with the way it performs, for some,
entirely new problems have cropped up after installation.
While Vista SP1 will not fix existing compatibility problems
with older applications and hardware, it can improve the reliability of most systems but may introduce new complications.
The Daytona Beach Journal Blog
reports in its test that one laptop was upgraded to Vista SP1 without problems but the test desktop reported that Vista was no longer valid after the
installation and wanted a new license key.

Apple Releases Fix for iMac Freeze Issue, fix not enough
In recent months, some users were experiencing freezing problems with their iMacs, apparently due to faulty drivers used for the included ATI Radeon
HD graphics cards. Apple aimed to fix the issue by the end of October and has just now released the "recommended" update for 20" and
24" iMacs with 2GHz, 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz processors. Apple has two separate updates available for download: iMac Software Update 1.2 for Tiger and
iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard. Although the company originally stayed silent on the issue, it is great to see that once they acknowledged it
they worked quickly to release a fix. Some users are reporting, however, that the issue remains unfixed.

New WMV PowerToy & registry key documentation
The birth of the VC-1 Encoder SDKs will reduce the need for these over the next few months, but Alex has updated his WMV PowerToy and also revised our
documentation about the registry key options.
Here's the new PowerToy. It mainly removes a few options that we determined weren't in the Format SDK 11 implementation, particularly
