11.08.2009ASUS EN8800GTS TOP Reviewed
Just over a year ago or an eon when we're talking computer technology, NVIDIA® introduced the beginning of what might well be the longest
running series of graphics solutions in history; the 8800. Initially the 8800 GTX reference card took center stage in November of 2006 and totally
rocked the gaming world by being the fastest card the world had seen up until this time. In what most would call brilliant business strategy
NVIDIA® then began to fill in the void created beneath the 8800 GTX with many different iterations of both lesser and overclocked cards all then
based on their 90nm fabrication process also termed the G80.
Almost a year later when rumors were abounding about an even faster series of
graphics solutions in the offing, NVIDIA® again came through. This time it wasn't a new series of cards, but a die shrink of their 90nm wonder
to 65nm and a new moniker, the G92. If you are like us at Bjorn3D, you are in awe of the sheer number of different graphics solutions that have been
created from one MCP/VPU and its substantive variants. There is most certainly a solution available for any consumer's needs. The only real
problem is trying to keep up with all the model numbers as many of them have been used with both the G80 and G92 versions. Alas, we're a consumer
enthusiast site and we're not focusing our attention on anything but the fastest and best in show.

27.11.2007Apple account hijacks spread to developers
Account hijackers have targeted Apple iTunes for months, but now they're hitting Apple developers as well.
Reg reader Andrew McAuley
discovered that his iTunes account was hijacked after 150 unauthorised transactions, each valued at $42, appeared on his debit card bill. McAuley,
a Brit who lives in the US, noticed the attack after he checked his bank account on 11 July. "I tried to log in to my
account and was
unable. Seems someone had changed the login to a different name completely," he explained.
When he contacted iTunes support McAuley was
told his account had been taken over by an "unknown fraudster" and that this was the subject of an ongoing investigation. Apple has suspended the
account.

BBC fixes BT Home Hub auto-vomit bug
BBC engineers have solved a mysterious, long-running bug that has meant iPlayer and live TV streams have frequently prompted the BT Home Hub, UK's
most common router, to reset itself.
The source of the problem has been identified after a lengthy, "tricky" search and a fix is
currently working its way through the BBC's back-end systems, iPlayer and embedded media architect Andy Smith told El Reg. iPlayer catch-up
streams of TV and radio no longer cause the crashes, while live webcasts of news programming should get the all-clear soon.

Microsoft officially 425 years behind the times
It's official: Microsoft is exactly four hundred and twenty-five years behind the times.
It's not just Excel and Exchange that ignore the Gregorian calendar. The
Reg has also confirmed that SQL Server 2008, Windows Small Business Server, and Windows Mobile are ignorant as well.
In the
wake of our story about Exchange 2007 failing to
realize that February 29 is a real day, one astute Reg reader pointed out that Microsoft has no excuse for allowing its software to behave
this way. "The rules of the Gregorian calendar aren't really that difficult to grasp," said someone called MacroRodent. "They are
not trade secrets. And they have been available for centuries."

InfoWorld launches drive to save Windows XP
The clock is ticking for Windows XP, the tried-and-true Microsoft operating system that millions of businesses and individuals depend on. Soon, the
only Windows option will be Vista, an operating system that businesses as well as individuals have disliked and often avoided. The lackluster changes
to Vista, coupled with the high costs of switching tens of millions of computers to it, have convinced InfoWorld that XP should not be retired as
planned on June 30.
"Over the past year, CIOs and CTOs have consistently told me they see no significant benefits to Vista, and
really don't want to spend the time and money to update all their computers, retrain their users, and deal with application incompatibilities for a
cosmetic upgrade," said Galen Gruman, executive editor at InfoWorld.

Hotmail via Outlook Express no more after June 30th
Thanks to brent3000 who posted this in our Back Page News forum,
it seems Microsoft is permanently disabling the ability to receive Hotmail via Outlook Express from June 30th. The software giant recommended via
email to its DAV protocol users, the free Windows Live Mail desktop utility as an alternative.
Thank you for using Microsoft®
Outlook® Express. Our information indicates that you use Outlook Express to access a Windows Live Hotmail® e-mail account via a protocol
called DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol). DAV, like POP3 or IMAP, is the way that a mail client communicates with a web-based mail
server.
As a valued customer, we want to provide advanced notice that as of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you
will no longer be able to access your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the familiarity of Outlook
Express and much more. This next generation of free e-mail software will allow you to easily manage multiple e-mail accounts—including Windows
Live Hotmail, plus other e-mail accounts that support POP3/IMAP. Better yet, Windows Live Mail integrates well with other Windows Live services, and
downloads in minutes. After you provide your user name and password, you will automatically be linked to your Hotmail account, providing continued
access to your email and contacts.

Latests QuickTime Exploit targets both Macs and PCs
A US-based security researcher has published a single piece of code that can remotely compromise both PCs and Macs as long as they are running
Apple's QuickTime media player.
The exploit is at least the fourth to target a newly discovered security flaw in the way QuickTime
interacts with servers that stream audio and video. Up until now, the exploits have only targeted machines running Windows operating systems, but
Lorenzo Hernandez, the researcher who prefers to go by the name Larry, says his exploit also targets Tiger and Leopard versions of OS X running on
both Intel-made processors or older machines that use the PowerPC chip. "Our intention was to provide a highly educational exploit," Larry
told El Reg. "We are trying to expose and show exploitation techniques for OS X

Windows XP: Whats really happening on June 30, 2008
In a thinly-veiled publicity stunt, Infoworld is seeking sign-ups for an online petition to
“help save XP” by sparing it the fate of “being discontinued on June 30, 2008.”
There are a couple of
problems here. First, Windows XP is not being “discontinued” on June 30. Instead, as of that date unless the software maker issues another reprieve like it did in September 2007 Microsoft will no longer make XP available to OEMs for preloading and/or via retail sales.
Users still will be able to get XP preloaded on new machines from white-box vendors/system builders through January 31, 2009. And
Vista Business and Ultimate customers with volume-license contracts
can still get XP via their “downgrade” rights (as far as I can tell from attempts to decipher Microsoft’s fairly convoluted
documentation around this issue).

Ecommerce standard tightens up wireless security
A revised version of an important security standard for ecommerce merchants was published on Wednesday. Version 1.2 of the Payment Card Industry Data
Security Standard (PCI DSS) mostly tweaks and clarifies the existing framework for the secure processing of credit card data. The 12 existing
requirements - covering areas such as the need to used a firewall, store cardholder data securely and encrypt transmission of cardholder data - remain
unchanged.
The revised standard, however, adds tighter controls for the security of wireless networks. The latest version of the standard
calls for wireless networks "connected to cardholder data environments" to be tested alongside those that transmit card data. Also, use of the aging
WEP wireless encryption will not be allowed in certified environments from the start of July 2010, and banned in new environments from April 2009.

Program Names govern admin rights in Vista
Developers have discovered
that the name given to a Vista
executable affects whether or
not it will require admin
rights to run. Security
experts said the feature might
seem odd, but helps to catch
out spyware. Reg Reader Mike,
a C++ developer, discovered
the behaviour after spending
days trying to work out why
just some of his projects
required elevation (admin
rights) to be run on his
Windows Vista machine. To his
disbelief, Mike realised that
the different properties were
simply due to projects being
named differently.
"If Vista sees that you
have created a Microsoft
Visual C++ project with
install in the project name,
then that .exe will
automatically require Admin
Rights to run. Create exactly
the same project, but call it,
say, Fred, and the problem
disappears," he explained.
"Vista's security isn't
just concerned with what an
.exe is doing to your PC, but
what it's actually
called."
