One of the key things that we focused on for Windows Vista was improving the experience for mobile (laptop) users. If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time running around with a laptop. However, when I am in my office, I tend to use my desktop. The primary way that I share files between my desktop and my laptop is by storing them on a Windows Server (it's also the primary way that I make sure that my files get backed up).

Rapidshare To Be Forced to Shut Down Following Court Defeat?

The music industry in Germany has secured a legal victory over the hugely popular file-hosting service, Rapidshare. According to the rights holders, Rapidshare is going to have to stop its users from downloading infringing music tracks from its servers, or face the prospect of being shut down.

Last week we reported on rumors that Rapidshare had, or was about to be, shut down, rumors that now look likely to resurface. The company, one of the worlds largest one-click file hosting services, has lost a copyright infringement case against German performing rights outfit, GEMA. Representing a claimed 60,000 members and more than 1 million rights owners worldwide, GEMA has taken an aggressive stance in pursuing legal action against Rapidshare, trying to force it to be accountable for the infringing actions of its users.

As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere

As ISPs constrict file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, new data shows that users are moving to file-hosting Web sites to avoid slow downloads.

RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.

The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

AVG update breaks iTunes

A recent AVG signature file update is incorrectly identifying iTunes/iPod files as viruses, as reported by forum users on the Apple website. The AVG Virus scanner identifies all iTunes/iPod related files as the 'Small.BOG' trojan - a trojan which does not seem to exist, as revealed by a quick Google search. The update, which is unidentified, but confirmed to be a false positive, is removing all files, and deleting them. Once these files have been "cleaned", iTunes will not run, and is not fixable by a reinstall. A fix has been pushed by AVG in the latest signature update - but users may need to reinstall iTunes. A fix can be found here on the Apple Forums.

Back in the Windows XP days, users were able to modify a system file called Uxtheme.dll and create custom .msstyle files, thus creating their own desktop themes to replace the default "Luna" theme. However, over time, patching went from just one file to multiple files and repatching was necessary when Microsoft would update the Uxtheme.dll files.

Comparing executable files in Windows Server 2008 in Full and Core installs

Windows Server 2008 Server Core installation is a minimal install of the upcoming Windows Server OS that can run specific roles (like DNS, Active Directory or File Server) with a much smaller footprint and attack surface.

In a previous blog post I looked into overall image sizes for both and also discussed some of the details about the differences between these Full and the Core installs.

Now I am taking it one step further to look into the executable files in both installs. I will be presenting about this next Thursday and wanted to have a better feel for whats really the difference between the two. My findings are presented below, first with some overall counts and then looking at files by group (only in Core, in both, only in full).

Administrative Templates (ADMX) for Windows Server 2008

Administrative templates provide Group Policy setting information for the items that appear under Administrative Templates. Group Policy tools use Administrative template files to populate policy settings in the user interface. This allows administrators to manage registry-based policy settings.

Administrative template files in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista are divided into ADMX (language-neutral) and ADML (language-specific) files. ADML files are XML-based ADM language files that are stored in a language-specific folder. By default, the %Systemroot%PolicyDefinitions folder on a local computer stores all ADMX files, and ADML files for all languages that are enabled on the computer.

Worm Transcodes MP3s To Infect PCs

Kaspersky Labs has discovered malware that inserts links to malicious Web pages within ASF media files, posing a danger to Windows users who download music files from P2P networks. Infected files launch IE and load a page that asks the user to download a codec. The download, a Trojan horse, installs a proxy program to route other traffic through the PC. The malware also has worm-like qualities, according to Secure Computing. It searches for MP3s, transcodes them to WMA format, wraps them in an ASF container, and adds links to further copies of the malware, all without modifying the .MP3 extension.

What is the WINSXS directory in Windows 2008 and Windows Vista and why is it so large?

Joseph Conway: A commonly asked question among people looking at a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 installation is why is the WinSxS folder so big?! To answer that question I need to first describe componentization, and how components are managed in Windows Vista.

One of the largest changes between previous versions of Windows and Windows Vista was a move from an INF described OS to componentization. A component in Windows is one or more binaries, a catalog file, and an XML file that describes everything about how the files should be installed. From associated registry keys and services to what kind security permissions the files should have. Components are grouped into logical units, and these units are used to build the different Windows editions...

Windows 7 tip: Recycle Bin on your Windows 7 Taskbar

I'm not exactly sure when it became cool to abandon the use of your operating system's desktop, but a growing number of people these days prefer the "clean" look. Recent releases of Microsoft Windows seem to encourage this. By default, Windows Vista and 7 strip the desktop of all icons but the Recycle Bin. Try as you may, ignoring this lone icon is impossible. Sure, you can hide it in just a few seconds, but at the cost of losing quick access to deleted files. You could also drag the Recycle Bin icon to the taskbar, but then it will appear pinned under Windows Explorer -- requiring an extra click to open and offering half the functionality.
