A few days after the cats and dogs CAPTCHA has been cracked, RapidShare installed a new CAPTCHA system called TEABAG_3D.

A Mac user switches to Vista?
Say something critical about Microsoft and Windows and no one bats an eyelash. But write anything even faintly judgmental about the Macintosh and in comes a flood of hate mail from Mac users. The worst part is the tone of most, which generally tend toward religious zealotry. So before I begin, let me begin by saying any e-mails of that type that are sent in response to this story will be deleted, with no reply.

14.10.2007Rapidshare To Be Forced to Shut Down Following Court Defeat?
The music industry in Germany has secured a legal victory over the hugely popular file-hosting service, Rapidshare. According to the rights holders,

Last week we reported on
rumors that Rapidshare had, or was about to be, shut down, rumors that now look likely to resurface. The company, one of the
worlds largest one-click file hosting services, has lost a copyright infringement case against German performing rights outfit, GEMA. Representing a
claimed 60,000 members and more than 1 million rights owners worldwide, GEMA has taken an aggressive stance in pursuing legal action against
Rapidshare, trying to force it to be accountable for the infringing actions of its users.

gives attackers full control of the PC, allowing them to steal user information or use the PC to send spam emails. One of the servers is based in the
Netherlands, with the other in Kazakhstan, according to an alert on Websense, a security research company.

24.01.2009Free Software Foundation releases GPL version 3
The Free Software Foundation
(FSF) today released version 3
of the GNU General Public
License (GNU GPL), the
world's most popular free
software license.
Since we founded the free
software movement, over 23
years ago, the free software
community has developed
thousands of useful programs
that respect the user's
freedom. The programs are in
the GNU/Linux operating
system, as well as personal
computers, telephones,
Internet servers, and more.
Most of these programs use the
GNU GPL to guarantee every
user the freedom to run,
study, adapt, improve, and
redistribute the program,
said Richard Stallman, founder
and president of the FSF.
Version 3 of the GNU GPL
strengthens this guarantee, by
ensuring that users can modify
the free software on their
personal and household
devices, and granting patent
licenses to every user. It
also extends compatibility
with other free software
licenses and increases
international uniformity. ..

29.11.2007As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere
As
ISPs constrict
file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, new data shows that users are moving to file-hosting Web sites to avoid slow downloads.
RapidShare and
MegaUpload are
among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in
Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.
The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus
Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

11.09.2007Editorial: Three ways to a cleaner, brighter Mac
The presupposition that Macs are the choice for the user who wants a hassle free, take it out of the box and get on with it experience is simply a
lie. This may very well be the experience Mac users get for a while, but soon enough the system (like every other computer) becomes a little sluggish,
and not as speedy as it was in its younger days. Increasingly, it is becoming apparent that if a user requires their Mac for anything other than
rudimentary tasks, it has to have a deep clean every now and again otherwise it will get a little sluggish.

19.05.2009New service tracks missing laptops for free
Lose your laptop these days and you lose part of your life: You say good-bye to photos, music, and personal documents that cannot be replaced, and if
it's a work computer, you may be the source of a very public data breach. But now, researchers at the University of Washington and the University
of California, San Diego, have found a way to give you a shot at getting your life back. On Monday, they plan to launch a new laptop tracking service,
called Adeona that is free and private.
Named after the Roman goddess credited with guiding children back to their parents, Adeona uses
software that has been under development for the past year. Here's how it works: A user downloads the free client software onto a laptop. That
software then starts anonymously sending encrypted notes about the computer's whereabouts to servers on the Internet. If the laptop ever goes
missing, the user downloads another program, enters a username and password, and then picks up this information from the servers, specifically a free
storage service that has been around for several years, called OpenDHT.

15.07.2008The Danger of Free
Everyone loves to get stuff for free. We line up to get a free drink, we sign up for free checking accounts, and we're happy to get a free gift
with the purchase of our next car. We love free stuff, even though we all know and understand that free is an illusion. After that free drink, we pay
for the next three. The bank is making money by investing what we put in that checking account. The car dealer can afford to give away a small gift
because the profit on the car is large. But none of this seems to bother us - free things still have a certain allure. But is the concept of free
taking us down a dangerous road?
Marketers long ago figured out the attractiveness of free. For decades companies have been playing tricks
using free to lure naive customers. But recently, our obsession with free has given rise to a new phenomenon - where the customer is never asked to
pay. How? Because the business makes their money on advertising. Marketers are happy to pay for access to customers, who in turn love not having to
pay. So the web plays the glorious role of middle man. Are we heading into dangerous territory? The paths that we are taking lead to confused
customers at best; and monopolistic practices at worst. A culture where consumers think that increasingly more and more services should be free is not
healthy.
