How to Share Large File on The Web Using MegaUploadOne of the most advantage of using MegaUpload, compare with other similar service, is the duration how long your file(s) will be kept in their server. Your uploaded files will be deleted only after it become unused for 30 days. So, if many of your friends download it, over and over again, the files will always be there. The size is quite big, up to 250MB. Not as big as YouSendIt which allow up to 1GB file size, but it's more than enough to share your music files, movies, etc.

The music industry in Germany has secured a legal victory over the hugely popular file-hosting service, Rapidshare. According to the rights holders,
Rapidshare is going to have to stop its users from downloading infringing music tracks from its servers, or face the prospect of being shut down.
Last week we reported on rumors that Rapidshare had, or was about to be, shut down, rumors that now look likely to resurface. The company, one of the
worlds largest ˜one-click file hosting services, has lost a copyright infringement case against German performing rights outfit, GEMA. Representing a
claimed 60,000 members and more than 1 million rights owners worldwide, GEMA has taken an aggressive stance in pursuing legal action against
Rapidshare, trying to force it to be accountable for the infringing actions of its users.
winbeta.org - 29.01.2008As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere
As ISPs constrict
file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, new data shows that users are moving to file-hosting Web sites to avoid slow downloads.
RapidShare and MegaUpload are
among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in
Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.
The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus
Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

The Xbox Live Arcade file size

Xbox 360 Core SKU (those
consumers had to use one of
Microsoft's memory cards).
Under
condition of anonymity,
sources revealed that the file

Microsoft's approval, that
size can be expanded to 450
MB.
When
asked for comment on the

Microsoft said, "We do not

confirm that rumor. Aside from
the exception we granted for

any plans to alter the file
size standard for Xbox Live

choice we make, we will hold a

betanews.com - 22.05.2006How long does it take to create a 16TB file?
Although
the theoretical maximum file size on NTFS is 264−1 clusters,
the current implementation of the NTFS driver supports files
up
to "only" 16TB minus 64KB.
(In other words, the disk format supports files up to
264−1 clusters,
but the
current drivers won't go above 16TB−64KB.)
Back in 2002,
in order to verify that the drivers did indeed support files
as big as their design maximum,
the NTFS test team sat down,
created a volume slightly bigger than 16TB,
and then created a file of
the maximum supported size,
filling it with a known pattern.
After the file was successfully created,
they then ran another program that
read the entire file back into
memory and verified that the contents were correct.
(They ran other tests, too, of course, but those are the
ones that
are important to this story.)
How long did it take to create this nearly-16TB file?
Around
three days.
winbeta.org - 04.12.2007Games to occupy up to 70% less space
During the Game Developers
Conference held in London this
week, an unknown company
Allegorithmic demonstrated
their technology to reduce the
size of texture files by up to
70% .
The
two programs, known as ProFX
and MaP Zone 2, should
potentially lessen the file
sizes of textures even while
the files keep the same
quality as current texture
files today. A show of their
programs' capabilities came
in the form of a demo for
RoboBlitz, which is coming out
for Xbox Live Arcade. With a
50 MB cap on the file size for
these game, file sizes did
have to be lessened, and
according to the report, the
game ran well on its Unreal 3
engine with only a 280kb size
for the overall texture
files.
What could
this mean to us? Web based
games anticipated by many
companies will become a
reality soon. Games will also
have more complexed and
sophisticated textures. All
these will create a revolution
in the gaming industry.

winbeta.org - 12.02.2008Critical F-Secure Update
released
Finnish antivirus company
F-Secure Corp. warned users
today to install an update to
fix a serious flaw in many of
its products that it said
attackers could use to seize
control over computers running
the
software.
F-Sec
ure said the problem has to do
with the way its products
examine compressed ZIP or RAR
archive files. People often
send files compressed with ZIP
or RAR utilities as e-mail
attachments because they can
radically reduce the
attachment file
size.
Unfortunately
, virus and worm writers also
often send their creations
inside ZIP or RAR files to
make it past e-mail security
scans, which usually filter
out executable files but often
allow compressed files,
leaving the inspection of
those files to antivirus
products once the user opens
the compressed
archive.
According
to F-Secure, attackers could
use the flaw to create a file
that cannot be scanned
properly, potentially allowing
the malicious file to slip
past the company's antivirus
scanners...
winbeta.org - 20.01.2006Similarity searches accelerate P2P downloads by 30-70%
I know you've all searched
for a file, only to see it be
displayed over and over in a
P2P client's search results.
The file name or description
may be different, but you can
see the file is the same
because of the size or some
other element. Now imagine
being able to downloading your
file by connecting to everyone
who has the same (more or
less) file.
The
limitation of P2P file sharing
is of course the number of
active users that have the
file in question. A research
team with members at Carnegie
Mellon, Purdue, and Intel
claims they can increase P2P
speeds by 30-70% by using what
they call Similarity-Enhanced
Transfer (SET), by
acknowledging that many of the
files being shared contain
pieces of identical data. Once
the requested file is divided
into small segments, the SET
software searches for similar
files using a method called
"handprinting" (similar to
techniques used to cluster
search results or filter
spam). Once similar files are
identified, they are scanned
for any individual chunks that
are identical to pieces of the
file being downloaded. As a
result, SET should greatly
expand the available sources
of any given file. The beauty
of the system is that it's
not all theory; the team has
successfully tested the
technology with existing P2P
networks.
They team
will be presenting their
technique at the 4th Symposium
on Networked Systems Design
and Implementation tomorrow,
along with actual
implementation code. " This
is a technique that I would
like people to steal.
Developers should just take
the idea and use it in their
own systems ," said David
Anderson of Carnegie
Mellon.

winbeta.org - 05.06.2009Unlimited online storage for free, almost: Wuala
Wuala is a new company with a compelling story for Web users: If you want to share files -- music,
videos, anything -- with your friends and family, it will let you do it for free, with no file size or bandwidth limits.
The
catch: You get 1 GB of storage for free. Beyond that, you get access to free storage in proportion to the amount of storage from your own hard drives
that you share with the Wuala community.
Wuala uses a "mesh" of hard drives from all its users. Everything you share gets
sliced into 500 or so pieces and the distributed in tiny bits, and redundancy, to thousands of other users. When you, or someone you're sharing the
file with, wants to load or play a file, it's pulled in from users, BitTorrent-like.
