Rapidshare To Be Forced to Shut Down Following Court Defeat?

The music industry in Germany has secured a legal victory over the hugely popular file-hosting service, Rapidshare. According to the rights holders, Rapidshare is going to have to stop its users from downloading infringing music tracks from its servers, or face the prospect of being shut down.

Last week we reported on rumors that Rapidshare had, or was about to be, shut down, rumors that now look likely to resurface. The company, one of the worlds largest ˜one-click file hosting services, has lost a copyright infringement case against German performing rights outfit, GEMA. Representing a claimed 60,000 members and more than 1 million rights owners worldwide, GEMA has taken an aggressive stance in pursuing legal action against Rapidshare, trying to force it to be accountable for the infringing actions of its users.

Computational knowledge engines: the search engine, evolved

A new search engine, known as Wolfram|Alpha has launched. It may be improper to refer to it as a search engine, as it refers to itself as a "computational knowledge engine". The engine differs from a traditional search engine in that the goal of the engine is not only to make information accessible, but in the case of WolframAlpha, immediately computable. To perhaps give a better explanation of what WolframAlpha is, let us walk through an average searching scenario. I stumble on the website, and in the search field I decide to type my city's name, Toronto. If the website stumbled upon were Google, one would now have access to several pages referring to Toronto.

As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere

As ISPs constrict file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, new data shows that users are moving to file-hosting Web sites to avoid slow downloads.

RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.

The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

Microsoft AV Scan Engine Updating Issue

Microsoft is aware of an issue with the Microsoft AV engine not updating on some installations of Antigen and Forefront Server Security products. Not all installations of the products are experiencing this issue, however all products may be affected.

The issue arose because the aveMicrosoft.dll in one of the Microsoft AV engine updates was marked as hidden, causing all subsequent updates to fail when attempting to delete this file. When that occurs, the engine is rolled back. This means that installations experiencing this problem are running with an outdated version of the Microsoft AV engine.

Google testing their re-engineered search engine

With all the current shenanigans going on between Microsoft and Yahoo! (that being that the former has struck a deal with the latter in which Yahoo!'s search engine will be powered by Bing), the technology world seems to have forgotten about Google's plans to develop further. The company has certainly been mentioned a lot lately as a competitor, but nothing has been speculated about them improving their current offering. Now, however, according to Mashable, we've got a sudden announcement about the topic from the company itself. Google has been working on a re-engineered version of their search engine lately, and they've got a (public) developer test website to show for it.
