RapidShare CAPTCHA has always been hacked no matter how tough they made it. Usually whenever RapidShare updates their CAPTCHA, it only took a few days for third party download tools to auto recognize it. One of the toughest CAPTCHA was with cats and dogs in them and it took 3-4 weeks to be cracked. A few days after the cats and dogs CAPTCHA has been cracked, RapidShare installed a new CAPTCHA system called TEABAG_3D.

18.9.2009Rapidshare To Be Forced to Shut Down Following Court Defeat?
The music industry in Germany has secured a legal victory over the hugely popular file-hosting service, Rapidshare. According to the rights holders,
Rapidshare is going to have to stop its users from downloading infringing music tracks from its servers, or face the prospect of being shut down.
Last week we reported on
rumors that Rapidshare had, or was about to be, shut down, rumors that now look likely to resurface. The company, one of the
worlds largest ˜one-click file hosting services, has lost a copyright infringement case against German performing rights outfit, GEMA. Representing a
claimed 60,000 members and more than 1 million rights owners worldwide, GEMA has taken an aggressive stance in pursuing legal action against
Rapidshare, trying to force it to be accountable for the infringing actions of its users.

06.11.2007Facebook users targeted by botnet spam
Facebook users have been targeted by a large-scale spam attack that informs them that their password has been reset, and that the attached zip archive
contains their new password. Instead of a new password, users will find a trojan downloader, dubbed "Bredlab" or "Bredolab" by anti-virus
companies. The downloader then downloads additional malware from two servers, including fake anti-virus software, and joins the Bredolab botnet. This
gives attackers full control of the PC, allowing them to steal user information or use the PC to send spam emails. One of the servers is based in the
Netherlands, with the other in Kazakhstan, according to an alert on Websense, a security research company.

29.11.2007As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere
As
ISPs constrict
file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, new data shows that users are moving to file-hosting Web sites to avoid slow downloads.
RapidShare and
MegaUpload are
among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in
Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.
The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus
Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

12.02.2006Microsoft Security Report: Trojan Horses Increase 300%
If your system gets hacked, chances are it will be from a Trojan. A Microsoft Security Intelligence report tabulated a 300 percent increase in the
number of Trojan downloaders and droppers the last half of 2007 -- a trend which security experts say will continue to exponentially grow. Consistent
with malware trends, the biggest security threats are moving to the Web and consequently experts say that they expect to see the number of Trojans
rise exponentially. The reason? Trojans are by far the most "financially interesting" malware, experts say.
"It's the path of least
resistance," said Doug Camplejohn, CEO and cofounder of security company Mi5. "For most enterprises, it's where they're least protected."
These Trojans allow attackers to install a small downloader onto unsuspecting users machines, usually without their consent, in order to record
passwords, credit card, bank account numbers and other personal identifying information.

24.04.2008German Police Arrest 10 International Phishing Suspects
Germany's Federal Crime Office has arrested a Russian-Ukrainian-German group of 10 suspects accused of running a Trojan horse phishing attack that
has been targeting users' bank accounts. An 18-month police investigation culminated in arrests on Tuesday in several German cities as well a number
of computers being seized. The defendants allegedly bought jewelry, cars, and luxury holidays with the money they made off the scam. The group is
alleged to have targeted online banking users by sending them fraudulent e-mails claiming to come from Deutsche Telekom, eBay, Wal-Mart, Ikea, or the
German television licensing organization. Researchers at security company Sophos noted that attachments to the e-mails contained various Trojan
horses, one of which is ranked first in the list of Top Corporate User Malware in Avert Labs' Threat Library.
" The financial rewards
for cybercrime are significant, and we are seeing more organized gangs getting involved in this kind of crime all the time. Everyone who has a
computer needs to learn how to properly defend themselves, or risk having their money and identity stolen. For many months there have been several
waves a week of phishing e-mails sent with new variants of this downloader, that when executed would install some keylogging Trojan. The e-mails
typically look like a receipt sent from some company with details supposedly found in the attached .zip. Some of these e-mails even claimed to have
come from German law enforcement agencies ," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

14.09.2007Hackers hijack Windows Update's downloader
The Background Intelligent
Transfer Service used by
Microsoft Corporation's
operating systems to deliver
patches via Windows Update, is
being used by hackers to sneak
malware past firewalls,
according to Symantec
researchers. BITS, which
debuted in Windows XP and is
baked into Windows Server 2003
and Windows Vista, is an
asynchronous file transfer
service with automatic
throttling, meaning downloads
don't impact other network
chores. It automatically
resumes if the connection is
broken.
Elia
Florio, a researcher with
Symantec's security response
team, outlined why some Trojan
makers have started to call on
BITS to download add-on code
to an already compromised
computer. " For one simple
reason: BITS is part of the
operating system, so it's
trusted and bypasses the local
firewall while downloading
files. It's not easy to check
what BITS should download and
not download. Probably the
BITS interface should be
designed to be accessible only
with a higher level of
privilege, or the download
jobs created with BITS should
be restricted to only trusted
URLs ."
Symantec first caught
chatter about BITS on Russian
hacker message boards late
last year and has been on the
lookout for it since. A Trojan
spammed in March was one of
the first to put the technique
into practice. " It's free
and reliable, and they don't
have to write their own
download code ," said
Oliver Friedrichs, director of
Symantec's security response
group. Although BITS powers
the downloads delivered by
Microsoft's Windows Update
service, Friedrichs reassured
users that there was no risk
to the service itself.
" There's no evidence to
suspect that Windows Update
can be compromised. If it has
a weakness, someone would have
found it by now. But this does
show how attackers are
leveraging components and
becoming more and more modular
in how they create
software ."

11.05.2007Study Suggests Economics, not Morality key to Movie Piracy
According to the results of a
recent Digital Life America
study, roughly 18% of the US
online population download
movies online, and
approximately 80% percent of
that do so illegally. The
self-funded study, conducted
over a period of four months
in 2006, included results from
a nationally representative
sample of 2,616 Americans (via
phone and online survey) and
is supposed to be accurate to
plus or minus 2.4%.
The profile of an average
P2P downloader is a
29-year-old male (63% are
male, 37% female) with 16
movie titles stored on his
computer. Only 40% of those
surveyed believed that
downloading copyrighted movies
was a "very serious
offense." This can be either
attributed to the fact that
pirates perceive celebrities
and studios as "rich enough"
or that they consider the risk
vs. reward equation, factoring
convenience and price, and
ultimately find the illegal
download is a superior option
to the legal download. Other
data from the survey indicates
that Americans are
increasingly using their PCs
as media centers: 81% have
watched some sort of video
content on their computers,
not including user-generated
video sites such as YouTube.
" The current
crop of 'download to own'
movie services and the new
ones coming into the market
will need to offer greater
flexibility of use, selection,
and low prices to convert the
current users to their
services, otherwise,
file-sharing will continue to
thrive. Consumers who are
interested in downloadable
movies are turned off by
restrictions on what they can
do with the content
afterwards, as well as lack of
cross-platform and
cross-device compatibility.
This is even more important
for movies (compared to music)
because it's a bigger ticket
item. The more perceived
limitations there are, the
slower the adoption of
'legal' alternatives ,"
said study director Kaan
Yigit.
