A few days after the cats and dogs CAPTCHA has been cracked, RapidShare installed a new CAPTCHA system called TEABAG_3D.

Rapidshare To Be Forced to Shut Down Following Court Defeat?

The music industry in Germany has secured a legal victory over the hugely popular file-hosting service, Rapidshare. According to the rights holders, Rapidshare is going to have to stop its users from downloading infringing music tracks from its servers, or face the prospect of being shut down.

Last week we reported on rumors that Rapidshare had, or was about to be, shut down, rumors that now look likely to resurface. The company, one of the worlds largest ˜one-click file hosting services, has lost a copyright infringement case against German performing rights outfit, GEMA. Representing a claimed 60,000 members and more than 1 million rights owners worldwide, GEMA has taken an aggressive stance in pursuing legal action against Rapidshare, trying to force it to be accountable for the infringing actions of its users.

Comcast sets monthly bandwidth limit for customers

Comcast, the largest provider of cable-based broadband service in the U.S., will limit residential customers to 250GB of bandwidth a month beginning Oct. 1, the company announced late Thursday. Comcast will contact customers who go above the 250GB limit and ask them to curtail their use, Comcast said. If a customer goes over the monthly limit again during the following six months, Comcast will suspend service for a year.

Currently, Comcast contacts high-bandwidth customers and will suspend their accounts if they don't curb their use, but it has not set a firm bandwidth limit until now. Most customers contacted about their bandwidth usage agree to limit their activity, according to Charlie Douglas, Comcast's director of communications.

As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere

As ISPs constrict file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, new data shows that users are moving to file-hosting Web sites to avoid slow downloads.

RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.

The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

Hotmail Gets Storage Limit Bump, Other Upgrades

Microsoft announced today that Hotmail would undergo some major upgrades over the next several weeks that should make the service more attractive to webmail users. The most notable change is that the company is bumping the storage limit for Hotmail from 2GB (for free account users) to 5GB, and from 4GB to 10GB for paid users. This brings Hotmail's storage limit above that offered by Google-which remains at 2.8GB for free accounts and 8.8GB for the lowest tier of paid accounts.

That's not the only upgrade the webmail service is getting. Hotmail program manager Ellie Powers-Boyle wrote on the Windows Live Blog that the team has begun adding features that the "more advanced" users have been asking for. Some of the more general upgrades include performance and quality of service enhancements and an increase to the amount of time junk mail and deleted items are kept on the server.

Toshiba Preps 2GB NAND Flash Memory Chips

In April 2007, Toshiba will begin selling NAND flash memory chips capable of holding up to 2GB of data. 2GB? Why is this a big deal? Patience my friend, I'm getting to that. The 2GB availability should mean that higher capacity flash memory cards, used in anything from digital cameras to music players, are on their way. The last chips were of 1GB in size and Toshiba made them available late last year as engineering examples.

These flash memory cards are limited to the physical number of chips that can fit in the card: the bigger the capacity per chip, the bigger the overall capacity of the flash card. According to Toshiba, thanks to a new 56-nanometer production process that doubles memory density (developed by partner SanDisk), these chips will be the highest capacity currently available. Samples of the 2GB will be priced at $31 per chip.

Broadband users reach their limit

One million UK consumers have exceeded or come close to exceeding their broadband usage limit, research from consumer group uSwitch has found.

So-called usage caps, where internet service providers limit the amount of bandwidth users can have in any given month, are standard practice.

But the majority of users are still confused by the bandwidth curbs imposed on them, the research found.

For some who go over their limit the penalty is disconnection.

"With so much reliance on broadband, having the service disconnected could feel to someone as serious as having their electricity cut off," said Tim Wolfenden, spokesman for uSwitch.

Samsung introduces 60nm-class processing for 2Gb DDR2

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has developed what it claims is the industry's first 60nm-class 2Gb DDR2 and will begin mass producing it later this year. Compared with 80nm 2Gb DDR2, the 60nm-class with a speed of 800-megabits per second has improved DRAM performance up to 20%. Moreover, production efficiency for the new 2Gb DDR2 will be enhanced by about 40% using the finer 60nm-class process technology.

Besides its greater efficiencies, the new 2Gb DDR2 device will provide twice as much storage capacity over existing system memory solutions, which will accelerate the move toward higher densities in high-end market segments, according to Samsung

Windows 7 Starter Edition details confirmed

As was reported here on Neowin, there was speculation that Microsoft were planning to remove the application limit on Windows 7 Starter Edition. According to The Windows Blog, Microsoft have confirmed that the "3 applications at a time" limit that hobbled earlier versions of the Starter Edition has been removed for Windows 7. Now the only effective limit on the number of programs you can run concurrently is set by the amount of your memory. Windows 7 Starter Edition will have other limits, however, in order to differentiate it from other versions of the OS. "Windows 7 Starter does not include: * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes.

Microsoft to Limit Capabilities of Cheap Laptops

Microsoft is launching a program to promote the use of its Windows OS in ultra low-cost PCs, one effect of which will be to limit the hardware capabilities of this type of device, IDG News Service has learned.

Microsoft plans to offer PC makers steep discounts on Windows XP Home Edition to encourage them to use that OS instead of Linux on ultra low-cost PCs (ULPCs). To be eligible, however, the PC vendors that make ULPCs must limit screen sizes to 10.2 inches and hard drives to 80G bytes, and they cannot offer touch-screen PCs.

The program is outlined in confidential documents that Microsoft sent to PC makers last month, and which were obtained by IDG News Service. The goal apparently is to limit the hardware capabilities of ULPCs so that they don't eat into the market for mainstream PCs running Windows Vista, something both Microsoft and the PC vendors would want to avoid.

Toshiba: integrated HD DVD would 'limit' Xbox experience

Microsoft will not build an HD DVD drive into a future Xbox 360 because it doesn't want to "limit the user's experience", an insider at fellow HD DVD backer Toshiba has said.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the next-generation optical disc format, you might think, but there you have it it: buy HD DVD, limit your experience.

The comment comes from an unnamed Toshiba spokesperson by way of Yahoo! News. The commentator also dismissed recent claims that Toshiba is working on machine - possibly even an HD TV - with built-in Xbox 360 functionality.

"Its got nothing to do with us," the spokesperson said. "But we know Microsoft doesnt want to include the HD DVD drive so as not to limit the users experience."

Windows data copy limits exposed, sort of

Is there a limit how many files you can copy in one step? And if so, where is this limit? A post in the forums of a popular hardware site provides more clues where this limit may be and which hardware is affected.

We found this information earlier this week in a post on Aces Hardware where a user reported his findings. Hirschma writes that he was unable to copy large numbers of files under certain Windows/hardware environments and was confronted with an error 1450, causing an instability and requiring a system reboot. Depending on the Windows versions, he discovered varying limits: 760,000 in Windows XP 32-bit and about 2.7 million in Server 2003.
