Firefox 3
nightly build includes a
revised interface for the
download
manager, which features
search functionality and
grouping for active and
completed downloads. Support
for
toolbar
element resizing,
native Vista
menus, and an integrated
Plugin manager have also been
added.
The new "Plugins"
category in the Add-ons
manager allows users to see
which plugins are installed
(previously one had to
navigate to about:plugins to
do this) and it also makes it
easy to toggle various plugins
like the Flash player.
The revised
download manager, which is
loosely based on mockups that
can be found at the Mozilla
wiki, still has some rough
edges. Despite aesthetic
weaknesses, the new features
are very promising. The search
box makes it easy to filter
the download list and support
for grouping downloads based
on whether they are active or
completed provides a tangible
improvement in organization.
Next to each active download,
the manager displays a
pause/resume button and a
cancel button. Next to
completed downloads, there are
icons for opening the file and
displaying information about
the file's origin and local
path. There are still plans to
add more sophisticated
filtering functionality to the
download manager in the
future.

has sold over 140M copies of Vista globally since its consumer launch on January 30, 2007.
"That's a very rapid sales rate,"

09.01.2009Microsoft: Windows Vista sales "rapid" at 140m copies
Microsoft chair Bill Gates today noted at a European news conference that sales of Windows Vista have reached 140 million copies worldwide. The update
is the first since the company crossed the 100 million mark at the start of the new year, although Gates doesn't clarify when the company reached
the newer threshold. This demonstrates that Vista continues to sell at a "very rapid" rate, according to the Microsoft co-founder.
If
tracked between January and April, the number represents about 10 million copies of Vista sold per month in the first third of 2008 and signals a
slight increase in the sales rate for the operating system, which averaged at just over 9 million copies sold per month in 2007. However, the sales
rate is half that of the Windows update's initial results in the first two months of its launch, when it sold as many as 20 million copies per
month to cater to early demand.

is a more environmentally friendly way to purchase and distribute software because there's no need for packaging material." said Geoff Surkamer,
general manager of Dell's Global Digital Distribution. The Dell Download store offers customers a "digital locker" which allows them to
download previously purchased software for free.
