Microsoft customers face 64bit question

How will buyers react as the software giant makes key future applications 64bit only?

Microsoft?s decision to make Exchange and other key future products exclusive to 64bit servers could delay buyers switching to the new programs.

Earlier this month, Microsoft said that ?to help customers take full advantage of the power of 64bit computing?, forthcoming products including Exchange Server 12, the Centro infrastructure software for mid-sized firms and the R2 update to Windows Server Longhorn would be exclusively 64bit.

Google Product Chief: It's Okay to Fail Wisely

Traditional methods of innovation are changing, forcing businesses to move away from wielding a sustainable competitive advantage to bursts of continuous innovation and especially collaboration. This collaborative innovation will spur new products and services.

That was one of the messages from Matt Glotzbach, product management director for Google Enterprise, who discussed the need for changes in the way companies facilitate innovation during his keynote at the Interop New York show on Oct. 24.

"What we need is a model of continuous innovation, where you're constantly coming up with new things and so you have a lot of little short bursts," said Glotzbach, who nodded to the iPod, Macintosh and other aspects of Apple's history of innovation during his presentation.

Microsoft Announces Enterprise Innovation Management Initiative

Microsoft Corp. today announced its Innovation Process Management (IPM) initiative to help enterprises build a flexible IT platform to speed the process of innovation for competitive advantage and a higher return on investment.

In many industries, innovation traditionally has been a compartmentalized, top-down process run by a small team of researchers, designers or engineers. The rapid spread and high availability of collaborative technologies has changed that model. It is now widely recognized that the next great breakthrough in products, services and processes can come from people anywhere inside or outside an organization. Advancements in IT also make it possible for companies to design flexible processes to support innovation.

The Futurist: Why Apples Good Products Are Bad For Innovation

Fewrather, no othercompanies stir up the same fools game of me-too as Apple. I feel sort of ridiculous saying it, and perhaps sound like a bit of a fanboy, but Apple makes products that work in ways most CE products dont. When playing with an iPod or iPhone, its almost easy to take for granted the fact that most things we buy just arent user-friendly.

A top exec at Research In Motion (that would be the guys who make BlackBerrys) told me a few months back that about 30 percent of Windows Mobile phones were returnedpresumably because their buyers are so frustrated with their atrocious battery life/molassis-slow processors/impossible-to-navigate GUI/propensity to freeze. Im not sure how many iPhone buyers are returning their gadgets in frustration, but Id guess its a statistically insignificant number.

In general, as the cliche goes, Apple products are known for being simple, pretty, easy-to-use, and fun. And this is exactly why they are bad for progress in the tech world.

10 Microsoft research projects

Innovation is not just about cool new products. In technology, the best ideas require a) really smart people and b) lots of funding. For the past 33 years, Microsoft has had both in spades.

Yet, the precursor to any product release is the research and innovation that occurs before the first shipment to customers, that "pre-pre-alpha" stage where ideas are born.

In a recent two-day visit to Microsoft corporate headquarters, writer John Brandon met with several researchers working on new projects.

A few of these projects have already resulted in shipping products; others may never see the light of day -- they are meant as a proof of concept. Some could change how we do computing altogether. Yet, all of them are driven by bright thinkers who are working to solve real-world technical problems.

Innovation is a key nowadays to making (and more importantly, selling) products, so making a top 50 list is certainly a grand achievement. Without further ado, here is the list. 1. He employed the power of technology, using Twitter and various other internet tools to connect with voters, doing what no other President has done fully before. 2. Google: Google continues to make it to innovation lists, and with little wonder.
