Refurbished iPhone 3G's appear in Best Buy Mobile stores

Want an iPhone 3G, but would really like a few more bucks taken off of the price tag before you commit? Well, your chance has arrived, as long as you're willing to take a slight gamble, that is. The 8GB variant of Apple's hugely popular device will sell for $149 and the 16GB model will retail for $249. Of course, those prices still require you to sign a two year commitment to AT&T Mobility. Next Generation iPhone: 7.2Mbit, Video Camera, More?

Last week some more details about the next iPhone revision continued leaking out.

First, there were spottings of new Apple device IDs found embedded within the iPhone 3.0 firmware. Silicon Alley Insider then claimed that the next iPhone would come with "much faster internet". Finally, AppleInsider said that the new iPhone would indeed have a video camera, supporting evidence of video publishing screenshots also found in iPhone 3.0.

It's not surprising that the number of leaks is increasing as Apple does have to keep their carrier partners at least somewhat informed heading into a new release. We've also continued to hear unconfirmed whispers and have specifically heard that the new iPhone with support a 7.2Mbit chipset.

Another interesting possibility is that Apple may have settled on the Marvell PXA168 ARM chip as the heart of a future device. Some unconfirmed claims point to Apple buying up supplies of this chip which is reportedly also due in the July timeframe. The Marvell PXA168 CPU was announced in January of this year and aims to provide "entry-level laptop" capabilities to consumer electronic devices.

iPhone firmware hints at major hardware revision

Code discovered by MacRumors in the recently released 2.1.1 iPhone update suggests the release of a new iPhone may be imminent. Although these hidden strings may seem insignificant to the untrained eye, they are used by Apple to differentiate between hardware iterations. The original iPhone, which launched in 2007, is branded "iPhone 1,1" whilst the 3G iPhone is known as "iPhone 1,2". Such a significant rise in the product string number points towards a major product revision. Numerous reports have been circulating in the past few weeks indicating that work is already well under way on the next generation iPhone, which could feature a quad-core processor.

First Day iPhone Supply Exceeds Demand

In retrospect, Apple should have made a disclaimer before the iPhone went on sale Friday at 6pm: If you want an iPhone, don't go to an AT&T store. Apple's Passing Out The Benjamins to iPhone Owners

It's no surprise that after Apple announced the $200 price drop of the 8GB iPhone, early adopters were a little upset they paid 1/3 more for the device just because they jumped on it quickly. Some will say that it's a price to pay to be first with a hot new gadget, but that's not the point. Apple has, apparently, heard the cries and Steve Jobs has stepped up in a big way.

Jobs announced in an open letter on Apple.com, that all iPhone owners who paid the full $599 for the device will receive a $100 US Apple gift card. Yes, while you may be locked in to buying Apple product with that gift card, it's still an extra hundred bones in your pocket that wasn't there a few days ago.

Details of the gift card program are still being worked out, but Jobs expects to have something posted on the Apple homepage sometime next week. So, if you're an early iPhone adopter, keep your eyes peeled. This is probably something you don't want to miss out on.

iPhone users need to set aside March 17th as that's the date Apple will take the cover off of iPhone OS 3. Not very much is known at this point as Apple has a good track record of keeping things under wraps until the last moment. iPhone OS 3 will usher in another era for Apple and its phenomenal iPhone. Hopefully in this update we may see copy and paste, flash, and native video recording on the iPhone. Add in those new features and Apple may have the most robust phone on the market today.

Zombie botnet targets iPhone buyers

Would-be iPhone owners are being targeted by a 7,500-strong zombie botnet, security experts have warned. PandaLabs said that buying an iPhone online could cost surfers a lot more than the advertised price if their computers become infected by the Aifone.A Trojan.

Users of an infected PC who try to buy an iPhone online will be taken to a false page that appears to be the official iPhone page. If the user tries to buy the phone from the spoof page, they will be giving their bank details to cyber-criminals. PandaLabs said that it has uncovered a special tool used by cyber-criminals to control the botnet.

iPhone Spurs Mobile Web Traffic

Although the main focus of this year's MacWorld was the MacBook Air, last year's much touted, much hyped iPhone still managed to make waves. In data provided to the New York Times, Google disclosed that it received more traffic from iPhones this Christmas than from any other mobile device, despite owning only 2 percent of the smart-phone market and less than 1 percent of the overall mobile-phone market (Jobs announced that 4 million iPhones had been sold thus far). That means that while fewer people own iPhones, those who do possess the device use it to access the Internet much more than those with competing handsets. What's not clear is whether the iPhone's slick design and simple user interface has proved useful for other functions -- such as buying music. Although iPhone users can purchase songs from iTunes when in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple declined to reveal how many have done so.
