13.09.2006Seven Patches Coming From Microsoft
Microsoft expects to release seven security patches with four "Critical" and three "Important" bulletins as part of its upcoming Patch Tuesday
release.
The critical patches affect Windows Server Service Packs for 2000 and 2003 versions as well as Internet Explorer,
versions 5 through 7 and Outlook Express for Windows 2000, 2003 and Windows XP.
The common thread of the four "critical"
patches is their remote code execution (RCE) implications, a risk consideration that has been pretty consistent over the last few patch release
announcements. Microsoft suggests using Baseline Security Analyzer to flesh out any potential bugs or problems.
Meanwhile, the
three "important" issues are more varied in nature, with two bulletins affecting almost all Windows OS and server versions, including multiple
service pack releases of Windows 2000 and 2003, XP and Vista. A third patch is related to Windows SharePoint Services.

05.01.2008Critical Windows patch may
wreak PC havoc
A Microsoft patch
meant to fix critical security
flaws in Windows 2000, Windows
XP and Windows Server 2003 is
causing trouble for some
users, the company said
Friday.
Th
e patch was released Tuesday
to fix four Windows flaws,
including one that experts
predict will be exploited by a
worm in the coming days. The
flaw, tagged "critical" by
Microsoft, lies in a Windows
component for transaction
processing called the
Microsoft Distributed
Transaction Coordinator, or
MSDTC.
Installing
the patch can cause serious
problems, Microsoft said in an
advisory posted to its Web
site Friday. The patch could
lock users out of their PC,
prevent the Windows Firewall
from starting, block certain
applications from running or
installing, and empty the
network connections folder,
among other things, the
software maker said. ..

15.06.2007Microsoft Plans Six Security Updates, Two For Windows Vista
Gearing up for next
week's Patch Tuesday release,
Microsoft announced on
Thursday that it's preparing
six security updates -- four
of them for critical bugs.
One
security update actually can
patch multiple vulnerabilities
so it's unclear at this point
how many flaws next week's
releases will fix. Microsoft,
though, did announce in its
Security Bulletin Advance
Notification that each of the
four critical updates will
affect Windows software, while
only one affects Internet
Explorer. Another one will
address issues in Outlook
Express, as well as Windows
Mail.
One critical
vulnerability affects Windows
Mail in Windows Vista and
Windows Vista x64 edition.

SSDs run best on Windows 2000, Patriot claims
If Microsoft really wants to tweak solid-state drive performance in Windows 7, then perhaps
it only needs to look back. As ComputerWorld reports, Patriot Memory claims that the venerable Windows 2000 out
performs its modern successors when running on SSDs.
Patriot reportedly found Windows 2000 to be "5% to 8% faster"
than OSes like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux, although the report doesn't say exactly what tests those numbers apply to. Patriot
Engineering Manager Saeed Arash Far commented that Vista actually outperformed XP in the same benchmarks, but Windows 2000 trumped them both.

Microsoft to release EMERGENCY patch for Windows today
Cheers Bink for the heads up that Microsoft has notified him that they will release an emergency
security patch later today.
Thursday October 23rd, 17:00 GMT (That is 19:00 for GMT+1).
All Microsoft has said so far is that
the vulnerability can be remotely exploited by malware.
Microsoft advises every Windows user / Administrator to update their machines,
every currently supported Windows version is affected, so: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Vista,
Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 Core Installation.
Bink goes on to say "I'm not sure if all editions are affected, but it
does look like it, so also Windows Embedded, Windows CE, Hyper-V Server? To my knowledge this is only the second time that Microsoft has released an
out of band security patch."
