How to Backup and Restore to Preserve OEM Offline Pre-Activation When Reinstall Windows XP
Most users of new computers with Windows XP pre-installed will notice that no activation is required after they unwrap and start up the new laptop or notebook PC, even though they need to go through the initial set up process, and a product key is found on the Certificate of Authenticity attached to the PC (COA Key). Large PC manufacturers known as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) have the ability to pre-activate Windows XP operating system installed on new PCs via SLP (System Locked Preinstallation).

3.6.2009Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup
Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup
copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2002 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed
up.
With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back
them up.
Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single
.PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you
use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files.

18.01.2009Microsoft plans to open up Outlook PST data format
Microsoft said today that it plans to open up the PST data format commonly used within Outlook. In a MSDN blog posting, Paul Lorimer, Group Manager
of Microsoft Office Interoperability, confirmed Microsoft want to improve platform-independent access to email, calendar, contacts, and other data
generated by Microsoft Outlook. The PST format is used to store data ranging from email to calendar and contacts and allows for users to export and
import that data within Microsoft Outlook. According to Lorimer: "In order to facilitate interoperability and enable customers and vendors to access
the data in .pst files on a variety of platforms, we will be releasing documentation for the .pst file format.

26.10.2009Backup More Than 1GB per Second Using SQL2008 Backup Compression
Backup Compression in SQL2008 performs very well and it is easy to use. You could either use With Compression along with the Backup command or
simply enable default backup compression through sp_configure by setting backup compression default value to 1. It is very convenient for backups of
large databases in our customer lab environment.
A few things you could do to make the backup compression perform better. The
hardware we used is 32way HP
Superdome and

15.08.2006Whats new with backup and Restore on Vista SP1
Christine Fok: Vista SP1 Backup & Restore contains many updates that improve reliability. Great effort has been put into improving the overall quality
of File Backup, Complete PC Backup and System Restore.
Many of those important changes may not be visible to users, but if you
run Backup and Restore tools, you can see some functionality improvements that many users had asked for:
Backing-up EFS
files
File Backup now backs up EFS (Encrypting File System) encrypted files. For those concerned with security, the encryption on
those files are kept throughout the process. So dont worry, you wont compromise your documents security by using our Vista SP1 backup tool.
Restoring Complete PC to a new motherboard
With SP1, you can use Complete PC Restore to a new motherboard that uses
previously absent disk controller. That means, if the new hardware requires an inbox driver that was previously disabled when the Complete PC backup
was taken, the required critical driver will be enabled in the last stage of the restore to ensure the machine will be bootable.
OTS credentials for scheduling Backup
In Vista (pre-SP1), only someone logged in as administrator could configure backup.
Now, its possible for standard users to configure a backup. When scheduling a backup, standard users will be asked to supply administrator
credentials. That is what we call over-the-shoulder (OTS) credentials. That is because well, if the user doesnt know the credentials, the
administrator usually type it over the users shoulder :-)

05.08.2008Fifteen backup programs to safeguard your data
There's no way around it: Malware happens, drive failure happens, natural disaster happens. If your data isn't backed up, it's gone -- or it will
require an extremely expensive, not-certain-to-succeed recovery operation.
If all you have on your system are scribblings and
unimportant downloads, you might not care. But you probably have something of value: scanned pictures of ancestors, wedding videos, a presentation you
worked all week on, the song that's going to make you famous.
It pays to back up, and it has never been easier to do so. No
matter what method you're most comfortable with, be it traditional file-based backup, image backup, or continuous data protection, one of the
following 15 tools will do the trick.

25.09.2007Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore
Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an
individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed
up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server
keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the
amount of space that is used on your home server.

08.04.2008SanDisk introduces FlashBack adapter as notebook HDD backup
SanDisk announced the availability of its FlashBack adapter as a backup storage media to protect against unexpected PC system failure or hard disk
drive (HDD) crash. The FlashBack adapter fits into the ExpressCard slot where it will automatically and continuously back up and encrypt critical data
onto a SecureDigital (SD) or SD HighCapacity (SDHC) card. With the backup card nested completely inside the notebook, the system is literally out of
sight.
Once the adapter is installed, users pre-select backup sources by individual files, folders and/or file types. The device will then
back up and encrypt data automatically and continuously from the computer's HDD to the memory card. Backup occurs as soon as there is a change to
a designated file, or when a file is added or deleted. There is no need for scheduling backups and no need for further user intervention. Also, the
application has a screen indicator to show the amount of storage available, along with a taskbar icon that displays the ongoing backup status.

04.03.2008Windows 7 to allow PC backups to network share
Windows Complete
PC Backup is an image based backup tool where you could take a backup of your entire system and restore it later. Currently in Vista, the backed
up image cannot be saved in a network share as in
Windows Home Server. This requires to write the backup to DVD(s) or to an external hard drive.
With Windows 7,
Long has discovered one can
directly backup to a network share! I guess now’s a good a time as any to buy a NAS device. :)

25.04.2007Using Windows Vistas Complete PC Backup - A Guide
A week ago, my hard drive started making an odd clicking noise, and, after a call to Dell support, it was clear the damn thing was going to die on me,
fast. Dell sent me a new drive, free under my warranty, lickety-split, and last night my job was to move everything over to the new hard drive.
Since I run Windows Vista Ultimate, I can use the very nice Complete PC Backup feature to move my files over to the new hard drive,
and I did. Overall, it worked out nicely. You can also use this feature if you bought a new bigger hard drive and want to move everything over to
it.
Heres how it goes...

21.01.2008Microsoft: OneCare can delete user's emails
Microsoft has admitted that
its Live OneCare security
suite has been accidentally
deleting some users' Outlook
and Outlook Express e-mails.
According
to postings on Microsoft's
OneCare forum, erasures have
been caused when the antivirus
programme finds a virus in an
e-mail attachment. Instead of
then quarantining that single
e-mail, users have reported
that entire .pst or .dbx files
- the personal folder where
non-Exchange Server users'
messages and other details are
kept - have been quarantined
or, in some cases, even
deleted.
In a statement reported on
Computerworld, a Microsoft
spokesperson confirmed that
the company was "working to
address an issue where the
antimalware engine for OneCare
is erroneously quarantining
Outlook .pst files or Outlook
Express .dbx files, when the
.pst file or .dbx file
contains an infected
attachment". The spokesperson
added that a fix would be
included in the next OneCare
update, which is due on 13
March.
