16.7.2009Microsoft investigating zero-day Windows 7 hole
Microsoft confirmed to Cnet News that it is looking into a report of a vulnerability in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 that could be used by a malicious
attacker to remotely crash PCs. The software giant is looking into claims of a "possible denial-of-service vulnerability in Windows Server Message
Block (SMB)," a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed. Security researcher Laurent Graffie published proof of concept code in a blog posting proclaiming
"This bug is a real proof that SDL #FAIL".

WinFuture.de claims
that an RC1 build (might be 7048, but not necessarily) will be released privately sometime around February 27, 2009. MSDN and TechNet subscribers,
participants of the Technology Adopters Program (TAP), and beta testers signed up on Microsoft Connect will all be getting this RC1 build, though
it's not clear whether they will all receive the build on the same day. The public Release Candidate is expected to arrive sometime
in April.

22.11.2005Apple corners 1/26 of the English language
In the buildup to
Apple's presumed iPod announcement tomorrow
morning, we at CNET got to wondering: exactly how strong a hold does Apple have on this whole iBrand?
Seems that the proof is in
the googling.
Type the plain ol' English letter "i" into Google and hit return. Among the top 10
results, you'll get a Wikipedia entry on "
the ninth letter of the Latin alphabet" and a link to the IMDB page for the movie
I, Robot . But the No. 1 result links to the iTunes page on the
Apple site with the link text, "
Apple - iPod + iTunes." (Not to mention that
searching on "apple" returns only two results of 40 regarding the actual fruit.)
Is this branding at its most successful? Or
proof that industry has taken over all that is noncommercial in the world? What do you think?

05.09.2007Proof of concept adware program for OS X announced
Online fraudsters may be ready
to put Mac users in their
sights. On Thursday, antivirus
firm F-Secure published a
brief analysis of a
proof-of-concept adware
program for the Mac OS X that
could theoretically hook into
any application to run
attacker-specified code. The
program, dubbed IAdware by
F-Secure, could be silently
installed in a user's account
without requiring
administrator rights.
We won't disclose the exact
technique used here - it's a
feature not a bug - but let's
just say that installing a
System Library shouldn't be
allowed without prompting the
user," stated F-Secure in the
blog post. "Especially as it
only requires copy
permissions."
Vulnerability researchers
have increasingly focused on
finding flaws in the Mac OS.
During the month of November,
two serious flaws in Apple's
operating system were
disclosed as part of the Month
of Kernel Bugs (MoKB) project.
The IAdware proof-of-concept
code did nothing malicious,
but merely opened up a browser
each time an application was
opened, F-Secure stated.

26.01.2009Proof that Microsoft Plans to Buy Yahoo?
We're going to go out on a limb here and assume that Microsoft division president Kevin Johnson is not a moron. So we are also going to assume that,
when
Johnson said yesterday that Microsoft plans to grow
its search share from 10% to 30% and its online ad share from 6%, he could not possibly be imagining that Microsoft could do this on its own.
So that set us thinking: How could Microsoft actually achieve those goals?
Answer? (And there's only one). Buy
Yahoo.

30.01.2009Pilots, Proof of Concepts, Test, and Pre Production Environments
Joel Oleson: Although you may not find many references to dev, test, staging, environments, these are critical to large deployments. Even in the
commodity type space where you are simply hosting the out of the box SharePoint code, it still very important if not critical to have a "test"
environment where you can validate that the service pack installs, and the steps you follow work, and most important of all it works with your
environment. If there's a user error in the install how much better is it that you learn it on a non critical environment. There are slight
differences to all these various stages to deployment. Some more critical than others. Let me provide some insight into the differences...

30.06.2006UAC security flaw in Windows 7 beta (with proof of concept code)
Long Zheng: This is dedicated to every ignorant “tech journalist” who cried wolf about UAC in Windows Vista. A

01.12.2007Obama Wears Bullet-Proof Suit at Inauguration
Those big secret service men and women around President Obama were not the only ones protecting him yesterday. Reports are hitting the internet today
that Mr. Obama also had a specially-made bullet-proof suit on during the inaugural ceremonies.
There has been no official word on the
suit from the Secret Service, or Obama himself, but it is believed that Colombian designer Miguel Caballero designed the suit.
Not just
the suit was protected from bullets though, his tuxedo was also said to be bullet-resistant that he wore to the ten balls which he attended with
Michelle Obama last night. The couple did not return home to the White House until about 4:30 AM, but were able to return safe.
If the
suit and tuxedo are not enough for you, President Obama's new Presidential Limo is the safest ever built. It is the Cadillac One and nicknamed "The
Beast" because it rivals tanks and other war cars.

01.11.2006Cross-platform Proof-of-concept virus for OpenOffice.org
A group of malware developers
have produced a
proof-of-concept virus called
BadBunny that uses OpenOffice
macros. The code was sent
directly to SophosLabs, which
has already issued virus
protection updates. Sophos
technology consultant Graham
Cluley describes BadBunny as
" old-school malware
seemingly written to show off
a proof of concept rather than
a serious attempt to spy on
and steal from computer
users ." The virus, which
is embedded in a specially
crafted OpenOffice Draw
document, can execute scripts
with user-level permissions
and attempts to propagate
itself across the Internet via
mIRC and XChat.
The
BadBunny virus provides
insight into the security
failings of OpenOffice. The
most notable aspect of the
BadBunny virus is its
cross-platform nature; it can
successfully infect Windows,
Mac OS X, and Linux systems
and is capable of propagating
itself on both Windows and
Linux. Although it uses
OpenOffice's generic macro
language as the delivery
mechanism, the BadBunny virus
payload contains an assortment
of scripts specialized for
each target platform. On
Windows, BadBunny uses
JavaScript, on Mac OS X it
uses Ruby, and on Linux it
uses Perl and Python.
