20.02.2006Apple Recommends Antivirus Software
Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple
encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the
whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It
is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as
well as other security issues.

30.11.2008Security analysts closer to improved antivirus software test
Antivirus vendors are closer to agreeing on a new way to test their software after widespread agreement that older antivirus tests can be
misleading.
AV-Test.org, a German antivirus testing organization, is
meshing suggestions from vendors such as Symantec, Panda Software, and Trend Micro as well as its own for a new testing regime, said Maik Morgenstern,
who conducts product tests at AV-Test.org.
The new testing proposal -- also supported by vendors Kaspersky Lab and F-Secure, as
well as other testers such as Virus Bulletin -- will be presented next month at the Association of AntiVirus Asia Researchers 2007 conference in
Seoul.
Companies supporting AV-Test.org's paper will try to marshal support from other security vendors, said Mark Kennedy, an
antivirus engineer with Symantec.

18.01.2006Early alarms over new Mac malware
A new rogue security application for the Mac could be on the way, according to one industry executive. Sunbelt Software chief executive Alex
Eckelberry revealed that researchers at his company had uncovered a site advertising a product known as 'MacGuard.' The product claims to
offer both spyware and antivirus protections as well as the ability to remove adware and block phishing attacks on OS X systems.

Though no downloadable software has been found on the site, Eckelberry is urging users to remain vigilant. The Sunbelt chief noted that the
company believed to be behind the site also distributes 'Antivirus XP 2008' and 'XP Antivirus', a pair of Windows rogue security
applications Eckelberry classified as "really horrific." Both applications have been known for using exploits to install themselves without consent
and send the user fake alert messages designed to scare victims into paying for non-existent security protections.

17.10.2008Symantec releases antivirus just for gamers, but why?
Symantec today released
Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition, an antivirus utility designed specifically
not to bother gamers while they, err, game. The "Gamer Mode" suspends updates, alerts, and other background activities when you’re in
the middle of a game. It is automatically enabled when the system is in full screen mode (and can also be manually enabled). Resource-intensive
actions such as a system scan only occur when the computer is idle. Furthermore, Symantec claims that the software is a performance-driven release,
but then again, the normal NAV2009 is as well (as we've seen in
a recent performance test).
Rowan Trollope, senior vice president of consumer products at Symantec gave the following explanation for the product release...

25.11.2008Microsoft Preps Business Antivirus, Antispyware Product
Speaking at a technology event
near Amsterdam, Microsoft CEO
Steve Ballmer said that
Forefront Client Security,
Microsoft's antivirus and
antispyware product for
business desktops that has
been in development since
2003, will be available
" in the next month ."
The product has been in beta
testing for more than a year,
and the company's most recent
target for final release is by
the end of June. Ballmer
characterized the product as
an all-in-one security product
for PCs in a business
environment. Forefront Client
Security is based on software
Microsoft acquired in its 2003
purchase of antivirus vendor
GeCAD. It also includes
antispyware technology that
Microsoft brought on board in
2004 when it bought Giant
Company Software.
In his speech, Ballmer
acknowledged that it's only
been in the last five years
that Microsoft has made
security a priority as it
developed new and existing
products: " About five
years ago, we got a real
wake-up call: security issues
really started to accelerate
on the Internet and in our
products. We had built
products and designed them in
a world
the Internet.
we started to see any
increase in the number of
security issues, the first
thing we did was committed
ourselves to the reliability
of our core products ."
