Microsoft Office Visio 2007 Positioned in the Leaders Quadrant

Gartner Inc. has positioned Microsoft Corp., a leading provider of business process management (BPM) software, in the Leaders quadrant in its 2007 Magic Quadrant for Business Process Analysis (BPA) Tools, 2H07-1H08 report.1 The report evaluates services and products that include Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007.

The Gartner Magic Quadrant for BPA Tools examines how business process analysis tools continue to grow in importance as business managers, process architects and process analysts seek to better capture, understand, streamline and automate their business processes. Gartner also underscored that BPA is increasingly used for compliance and process improvement initiatives. For business process (BP) improvement, BPA is the key link between business activity monitoring and workflow assembly and business orchestration.

As businesses look more and more to process improvements as a core driver of growth and profitability, they made it clear that they want an easier way to analyze their processes, many of which are already captured in Office Visio 2007 diagrams, said Richard Wolf, general manager of the Office Graphics Division at Microsoft. This led us to focus Office Visio 2007 on integrating and displaying process, system and activity data directly in Office Visio 2007 diagrams for easier exploration and understanding...

Intel completes 32-nanometer chip development

Intel has completed the development phase of its next-generation manufacturing process that shrinks chip circuitry to 32 nanometers, the chipmaker said Tuesday night. Intel processors are currently made on a 45nm process. Generally, smaller geometries result in faster and more power-efficient processors. The chipmaker said in a statement that The company is on track for production readiness of this future generation (of transistors) in the fourth quarter of 2009 and also added that it will provide technical details about the 32nm process technology at the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) next week in San Francisco. Finishing the development phase for 32nm process technology keeps Intel on track with its "tick-tock" strategy.

Researchers warn that rootkits aren't the only threat

Rootkits may be getting most of the attention within the security community. But it's important not to overlook other, equally effective antiforensic techniques that malware writers have at their disposal for hiding their code from detection, according to a security researcher at the Black Hat 2007 conference.

Nick Harbour, a senior consultant at Alexandria, Va.-based security vendor Mandiant, outlined a few of those techniques during a presentation at the show. None of the methods are especially new, but they have been only scarcely documented.

One of the ways in which malware writers can hide their code from forensic discovery is via a method known as process injection. The technique involves the injection of malicious code into another legitimate running process on an end user's system, Harbour said, speaking with Computerworld after his presentation.

There are several methods of process injection available to hackers. The technique allows them to conceal the source of the malicious behavior in a computer. The technique can be used to bypass firewalls on client devices and other security defenses, because the process that has been injected with the malicious code would appear largely normal, he said...

AMD's 65nm ramp struck by leakage problems - report

You have probably been wondering where the new AMD 65nm chips are, or at least where they are above 2.6GHz or so. The reason you you haven't seen any, according to one SI, poster is leakage.

If you read this, you will see that the lower the bin goes, the vastly higher the leakage goes as well. This means that AMD is more or less binning 65nm parts based on leakage alone, and power consumption is the overriding factor limiting the new processes ramp.

Until the firm gets the process under control, it will not be able to meet or exceed the clock speeds achieved on the 90nm process. This also has some pretty ugly implications for Barcelona's ramp, and AMD in general. It is looking like AMDs 65nm process will be about as universally loved as Intel's 90nm ones...
