Microsoft's Big Bet: Win Within the Web
Although the latest version of Microsoft Windows is more than six months from shipping, company brass already have christened Vista as the best and biggest Windows release since Windows 95.
The company is making bold predictions, claiming Vista will be preloaded on as many as 200 million new personal computers in the first 24 months that the product is available. Windows 95 shipped on a mere 67 million new PCs during its first two years. These numbers are important. The prospects of nearly every product Microsoft makes ride on maintaining the ubiquity of Windows, which has in excess of 90 percent of the PC operating system market. It's been five years since the current Windows version was released, and Windows XP now is looking rather dated.

Year-to-year growth in the smartphone market in 2005 exceeded 70 per cent and will continue to grow "robustly" for the next several years, with Linux and Microsoft emerging as the dominant platforms, In-Stat predicted today.
However, the analyst firm warned that the risk remains of consumers perceiving these devices as just very expensive feature phones.
In-Stat noted that a major problem affecting the appeal of smartphones is that many users do not download applications that make them more useful after they leave the store.

22.02.2006Intel confident of appeal win in EU anti-trust case
Intel President Paul Otellini has said the company is confident of winning its appeal against the record $1.45 billion fine which was imposed by
EU anti-trust regulators in May this year. Speaking to the BBC following his keynote address at the company's annual developer forum, Mr Otellini
said, "I can't wait to get our side of the story out in the public. I continue to believe and assert they (the European Commission) have got it
wrong. We have appealed and we will win on appeal." AMD first complained about Intel's business practices in 2000, but it wasn't until
high-profile raids were conducted on Intel offices in July 2007 that the company was charged with breaching competition rules.

24.09.2009Microsoft Promotion: make MSN Your Homepage & Win a Zune
How badly does Microsoft want
to promote the Zune? Not badly
enough to think of anything
particularly ingenious.
Unique? yes. Succesful? No.
Apparently, Microsoft has
decided that every user who
sets MSN as their home page
will be entered to win one
of 50 Zunes. Step one: set
your home page to MSN. Not
using Internet Explorer? No
problem, Microsoft has
a page that
explains how to do it in
Firefox, Opera, Netscape and
Safari. Step two: enter
your e-mail address so that
you can be contacted ...
if you win. Of course
you can change it right back
(or not change it at all?),
but Microsoft hopes the
majority of users will fall in
love with the site right away.
Sure, many people will enter
the contest and avoid MSN for
the rest of their lives, but
many fools will be convinced
that keeping MSN as their home
page will get them a Zune,
someday. What are the chances
that those ignorant people
even know what a Zune is?
Giving away free
Zunes? Sure, that gets them
off the shelves. Microsoft
seems confident that if they
get enough units into
circulation, the devices may
start raising eyebrows.
Someone should tell Microsoft
that a first generation
product never gets far in a
saturated market. Oh yeah, and
free Zunes don't generate
much revenue. It probably
comes down to advertisements
on MSN's page. I guess the
company just wants to push
this model for as long as they
can, before they start
shelling out new ones. Instead
of bothering with this useless
marketing move, they could go
ahead and hire more engineers
and think of something to beat
the clickwheel. But why do
that when you can do something
that needs less effort? Oh
well, this may actually do
some good. Maybe some users
won't have spyware sites as
their home page anymore.

03.02.2007MP3 Blogs Offer File Sharing Even the RIAA Could Love
Although the term "file sharing" has all sorts of ugly connotations, it's not necessarily a bad thing. In some cases, it's even a win-win-win
situation for the recording industry, music lovers -- and Google.
There are countless MP3 file-sharing sites that don't look
anything like BitTorrent or Lime Wire. They're low-key, homegrown blogs that don't host illicitly copied music, but do provide links to third-party
sites, or storage lockers, such as
Megashare, where pirated music is stored. These
bloggers do it for the love of the music, they say, but it doesn't hurt that they make a little money from advertising along the way.

04.12.2007Making sense of Windows' irrational pricing and licensing
Ed Bott: A few weeks ago, Microsoft announced it was
cutting the price of
retail, shrink-wrapped copies of Windows Vista. The new suggested price for an upgrade edition of Windows Vista Ultimate is $219, down from $299. The
cost of an upgrade edition of Vista Home Premium drops to $129 from $159. Those price cuts were effective with the release of Vista Service Pack 1 in
mid-March, and the actual prices that people pay (the so-called street price) will invariably be lower: Amazon, for example, is offering discounts on
the upgrade editions of Vista Ultimate and Home Premium for $195 and $95, respectively. The full versions are $300 and $216.
