Microsoft Investigates Blocked Patch Updates in XP

Microsoft officials say they are investigating reports that files the company deployed this summer prevent Windows XP users who run a built-in "repair" function from installing as many as 80 of the company's latest security patches.

"We are aware of reports about customers not being able to download some updates from Windows Update when using the latest version of the Windows Update client and after reinstalling Windows XP system files from CD," a Microsoft spokesperson said Sept. 27. "We take this issue very seriously and are investigating the root cause of this behavior and what options are available to address it."

The issue was brought to light by Scott Dunn, a writer and associate editor with Windows Secrets Newsletter. According to Dunn, the problem is stealthy updates deployed by Microsoft in July and August. The files prevent Windows XP users who utilize the repair function from installing recent patches...

Microsoft planning updated UI for Windows Update

Beginning next month Microsoft will start an upgrade to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services. Microsoft plans to start the infrastructure update in late August, claiming "it will take a couple of months to complete the rollout." The update is required to "maintain and improve service quality, reliability, and operations." The update will simply improve the user interface for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 computers running Windows Update, adding a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about service packs. If you currently apply your updates automatically then this update will not modify the look and feel of Automatic Updates.

An Update For Windows Update

An infrastructure update has been planned for Windows Update client. The gradual roll-out of this update will begin in late July. This update will occur automatically to any system configured to either receive updates “automatically” or “notify” customers that new updates are available for download.

For enterprise customers who use Windows Server Update Services or Systems Management Server, all updating, including the WU client, is controlled by the network administrators, who have authority over the download and install experience. Windows Vista customers who select “never check for updates” in their WU settings will not receive this update until they manually install updates from Windows Update.
In this particular update, there will not make any changes to the way WU looks or feels, instead the following have been improved:
- The length of time it takes Windows Update to scan for updates
- The speed in which signature updates will be delivered

Detailed information on this is posted on the Microsoft Update blog.

Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update

Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

WinVerifyTrust update will be mandatory for WSUS

Cecilia Cole: A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Windows Vista Service Pack 1s availability to WSUS. In that post, we mentioned that you should install the WinVerifyTrust update (KB 938759) if you are running your WSUS server on a Windows 2003 server to prevent Windows Vista SP1 from being continually re-downloaded to the server once the service pack is released to WSUS.

Today, wed like to let you know that, in order to make sure all customers are well protected, we will be marking this particular update as mandatory, which means it will appear in the Updates/WSUS Updates node of the Admin console, and will be auto-approved by default (since the Advanced/WSUS Updates checkbox is checked by default in Options/Automatic Approvals).

Microsoft Offers Manual Fix to 'Stealth' Windows Update Bug

It turned out to be an insignificant problem after all, rather than something on the order of a rootkit: the discovery that Microsoft's Windows Update feature updates itself even when users turn off "automatic updates" - a fact that Microsoft had actually documented quite well, but which few had apparently read. More on Windows XP SP3...

Microsoft Update Team: We'd like to provide more information and address reports you may have heard about "continuous reboot loops" occurring upon the update to Windows XP SP3.

After investigation, weve determined this problem occurs on AMD-based machines with Windows XP images that were originally captured by an OEM on an Intel-based machine. The problem is a registry value, present on images created w/ Intel processors, that causes a driver (intelppm.sys) to load at boot. When intelppm.sys attempts to load on an AMD-based system upon the install of SP3, it causes a blue screen and the continuous reboot. Were planning to add a filter to prevent Windows Update from offering SP3 to affected systems and are investigating a fix. Any customers affected by this issue should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for assistance. More information is available in KB888372 and here.
