Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key

The news comes from website My Digital Life who state that you can already pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style. The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in Windows Vista.

Microsoft Killing Vista Betas Tomorrow

Those using beta versions of Windows Vista have just one day left to upgrade before Microsoft cripples their operating system.

Unless Vista Ultimate Beta 2, Release Candidate 1 (RC1) and RC2 are upgraded to a legal copy by Friday, machines running those editions will automatically reboot every two hours. This crippled state will continue until 28 August, at which point the operating system will refuse to boot.

In pop-up messages, Microsoft has told users to: "Back up important data from Windows now. The Windows license will expire in X days. Back up your files, and then install any edition of Windows Vista."

Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade

DailyTech has posted a 7-step workaround courtesy of Paul Thurrott (via Microsoft internal documents) on how to perform a clean install with a Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per Microsoft's new licensing requirements for Vista, users are required to install a Windows Vista Upgrade from within Windows XP and to make matters worse, the Windows XP license is forfeited. The process may be tedious, but few will argue when they compare the price differences between the upgrade and retail versions. Here we go:
  1. Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program.
  2. When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click "Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows Vista as a 30-day trial.
  3. When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased and continue with setup.
  4. Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop for the first time, run the install program from within Windows Vista.
  5. This time, type in your product key when prompted.
  6. When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install, choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.
  7. Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.

Satire: Microsoft Reveals Windows Vista SP1 Will Install XP

Imagine if this was true...

In response to customer demands Microsoft announced that instead of patching bugs and improving features of Windows Vista in the next service pack release, they would just install XP.

"We're focused on giving the customer what they want, and want they want is to just go back to XP," said Microsoft Development Chief Greg Elston.

Elston said not only will the move improve customer satisfaction with Vista, but will allow the company to focus resources on the next operating system instead of the flailing Vista. "We can move people off of Vista development now, and move them to Windows 7 development," said Elston. "That should allow us to only delay Windows 7 by thirteen months past its scheduled date instead of the planned eighteen."

Potential pirates, not Vista, get cracked

35 days before Windows XP was officially released, a pirated key, called the "devils0wn", began circulating around the web which allowed users to run a pirated copy of the operating system. Since then, the key has been used thousands of times and is now a part of Windows XP history. Trying to follow in devils0wn's footsteps, a new crack for Windows Vista is rumored to have become available. Called "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06", the key reportedly unlocks any version of Vista. Sounds great for pirates, right? Maybe it is, depending where you stand on software piracy.

Those who download "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06" will end up with anything but a cracked version of Vista. The file is neither a crack nor key generator, but it is a trojan installer that installs the malware known as "Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.aze ." According to APC Magazine, most antivirus scanners will recognize the trojan, but NOD32 and Norton's latest signatures do not.

While most of us dread the thought of a new piece of malware in the wild, it's hard not to like the motive behind this trojan. Nevertheless, any propagation of malware is a bad thing so I'm happy to hear that most scanners can stop this one.

Vista pushes XP and Linux aside on Asus EeePC

The Asus EeePC ships with Linux but with the help of an external DVD drive, its possible to install almost any OS of your choice, even Leopard with a bit of hacking but that comes with some legal issues that are discussed in that post.

Lets face it, the Asus EeePC isnt too terribly useful with the Linux install that it comes with, you cant add applications to it until they are developed and the update installer is somewhat lacking. The first thing I did was wipe the hard drive and install Windows XP Home Edition but one user decided to install something else.

I wouldnt have thought the EeePC capable of running Vista but according to the EeePC forums thats exactly what one user is doing. To be fair, there may be more but this is the only one I know of.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 and iTunes 8.2 pre-release available

Apple has been churning out the releases of betas for the latest iPhone OS, 3.0, on a bi-weekly basis since it was announced and there's no slowing down. Just today, iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 has become available, except this time it brought a friend; iTunes version 8.2 (pre-release) has become available to developers, and is required to install the new mobile firmware. What delicious new changes are we looking at here? In terms of the iPhone OS, you've got your usual fix of speed improvements and enhancements. There is something new, though; in the 'Settings' of iPhone OS, the new 'Store' entry now features your account details, rather than a screen with nothing but 'Store' on it.

Even with Vista SP1, Hackers Still Crack WGA

The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.

The workaround is designed to be integrated with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.
