At 11.45am local time on Friday, 13th February 2009, InfoMedia, Inc., developer and marketer of the popular iPhone application iFart Mobile, filed a lawsuit in United States District Court, Colorado, against Air-O-Matic Inc., maker of the competing flatulence app Pull My Finger to try to stop them from claiming trademark rights over the phrase "pull my finger". It all started when for Joel Comm, CEO of InfoMedia, and his team last summer when they came up with the idea for a fart app for the iPhone. They submitted it to Apple, who took their time in approving it (perhaps because they were not keen for people to begin to view the iPhone as a flatulence-emitting device).

UK government looking into open-source

According to an article by the BBC, the UK government will very soon be making a push for open-source software, mainly in the public services. The government is considering open-source software as an alternative to commercial software, although the government said that only "when it delivers best value for money" would it be adopted. Open-source software in itself is usually free, however, developing, maintaining and supporting it wouldn't be, which is what the government is investigating at the moment The problem with proprietary software that the government is facing is the contracts and licenses. Once the license expires, the government has to once again pay out. With open-source software, this could be prevented.

The Dawn of Free Internet Access?

It's the sort of news that ought to scare the pants off Comcast executives. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has proposed the commission auction off a portion of the 25 megahertz spectrum with a free provision -- meaning that whoever licenses the spectrum must provide internet access to people for free.

We won't know whether the FCC will proceed with the idea (the commissioners vote on June 12), but the fact that the proposal is even up for consideration must be gratifying to the millions of Comcast and Cox victims who may pay upwards of $40 per month for shoddy broadband access and awful customer service.

A "free" broadband spectrum auction could also help spur internet adoption in the U.S., where there is still a big gaping divide between the broadband haves and have-nots.
