05.10.2006Timing and Vista Woes for the Mobile Warrior
James Kendrick has had enough. A master of
mobile technology, hes been working with Vista on more mobile devices than I can keep track of. Hes put up a pretty scathing post on jkOnTheRun
stating that that in his opinion Vista will never run well on mobile devices and it is one giant step backwards. His long post is summed up nicely in
this excerpt:
The whole Vista mobile experience is very unstable and that is unsettling to anyone who needs to get their work done, and get it
done now. I don't care how pretty the OS is or how much new sophisticated stuff is going on under the hood if it makes my performance unpredictable.
That is such a big step backwards that you have to wonder how it can be fixed in the short term. I fear it can't. Say what you will about Windows
XP the one thing it is on mobile devices is stable. Rock-solid stable. Can anyone say that about Vista on mobile PCs? I have a very bad feeling
about the immediate future of mobile computing on the Vista platform. And that hits me where I live.
He mentions many of the issues that have
been well chronicled here on the pages and forums of GBM and elsewhere, like docking and undocking (
Robs post about this yesterday stirred up a small
firestorm) and echoes my experiences with UMPCs and Vista quite well. Anything with one of the newer mobile processors and limited to 1GB of memory
is nothing short of frustrating running Vista. It is just an unsatisfactory experience on a UMPC, period. Im actually thinking of selling the two
UMPCs I own and waiting (probably in vain) for something better down the line.

24.08.2007Small Note Regarding Copying News Posts (Updated)
I just wanted to post a small note regarding the use of our news posts in blogs and other news sites. As many of our readers know, WinBeta, as well as
many other similar sites including ActiveWin, Bink etc. properly source the news posts when we post something from an outside site.
However, we've noticed some bloggers that are copying entire news posts without sourcing them back to WinBeta or to the actual place they came
from. The latest and most easily noticed one came from
Odd-Magne Kristoffersen regarding our
Vista SP1
integration guide. We also noticed many other news posts on his blog that also came from us which were also not sourced back. What we fail to
understand is why some of our posts
do get sourced back to us while the more important posts regarding, for example, Vista SP1 integration do not. Our posts also
get changed on his blog so as to
remove the WinBeta links at the beginning of the post as seen in our
Vista SP1 integration guide.
What these non-sourced posts do is lead to a false claim of ownership as to
who actually wrote the post. While we realize that many sites do tend to post bits or the whole portion of our post and vice versa, they always get
properly sourced back to the correct site. We hope those who read this post (and we know Odd-Magne Kristoffersen will be reading it to) realize that
and do so in the future.
Update:
Odd-Magne
Kristoffersen's posts have been updated with source links back to us and other news sites. We thank him for the quick change.

26.05.2009Allchin: We really botched "Vista Capable" scheme
Former Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin claimed the company "really botched" the Vista Capable sticker scheme, according to a leaked email read
out in court.
Microsoft is currently defending a lawsuit in the US, which claims the company knowingly misled consumers by
allowing PC makers to put "Vista Capable" stickers on machines that could only run Vista Home Basic.
The plaintiffs claim that
Vista Basic "isn't the real Vista" because it doesn't offer many of the operating system's advanced features, such as Aero Glass or Media Center.
An earlier filing to the court cited
PC Pro contributing
editor Jon Honeyball's interview with Acer Corporate Vice President, Jim Wong, in which he claimed "Premium is the real Vista".
Now the court has heard that several Microsoft employees also shared Wong's doubts. One employee's email stated that "even a piece of junk
will qualify" for the "Windows Vista Capable" sticker, according to court testimony reported in the
Seattle
Post-Intelligencer.

11.02.2008Vista SP1 x86 appears on Torrent Sites
In the last few days, certain Neowin forum members have reported that an image of Vista SP1 x86 Final has leaked to torrent sites. This file is
supposedly a slipstreamed image of the final Service Pack 1 for Vista x86. It is allegedly available in various languages, including English. Since
many believe that this is indeed the download that Microsoft will provide in the upcoming weeks, I would like to emphasize that this is not the case.
This release is not official, nor is it genuine. I repeat: Vista SP1 has not gone final.
Neowin members are reporting that the file in
question may be SP1 Refresh 2 slipstreamed or simply a malware-filled release. I would like to remind our members not to post links to any Vista SP1
build, unless it comes directly from Microsoft’s servers.
